Great review. As for me, I didn't know about this show in the 80s when it came out. But I did eventually learn of it in the mid 2000s when KZbin became available. And I saw every episode. The show instantly became one of my favorite 80s anime. And it still holds a special place in my heart to this day.

It's so sad to see that this anime never makes it on ppl top 10s of 80s anime. It's just weird, because it is easily among the top 3 best animes of the 80s.

Wanna talk about bad dubs? The Finnish dub. Though I think the bear Madara wasn't actually female, it was a translation error. Also in Finland it was called "Hopenuoli", which means Silver Arrow, since the Finnish word for fang, "hammas", is synonymous with tooth. "Silver Tooth" doesn't have quite same ring to it, though there is also a more specific term for sharp teeth, but it's a much longer word "torahammas". Also I'm gonna give all the righteous rage on them not including females in the pack: Dogs are descendants of wolves and wild dogs tend to operate on a similar pack mentality as their ancestor species. In a pack, every single individual, barring pups, pull their own weight, this includes the females who hunt and kill just like the males.

I remember reading an interview with Yoshihiro Takahashi, Where she was asked why dogs began to talk in the middle of the series. Takahashi said this was due to the fact that the popularity of Shonen Jump started to slip badly after the first few chapters, and at worst this would have led GNG to be stopped and left unfinished. When Takahashi had asked his publisher (It may be that, I remember quite wrong) that, how to increase the popularity of the series. The publisher had responded to this by throwing the idea that "what if you put your dogs to talk". And as soon as the dogs began to talk, the popularity of the series started to rise again. That is, in other words, if dogs were not to be talked about, we would not have Orion, Weed, or even any single Saga of Silver Fang. And speaking of those backdrops, there is always Shin Gaiden Manga, where Ben, Cross, "Kai Brothers", Akame and Benizakura were given much longer and more detailed backdrops. In one interview, Takahashi had thrown the idea of giving Akakabuto a longer and more detailed backdrop. Of course, the fact that, in the manga version, Akakabuto speaks, must also be remembered. I myself became familiar with this series in day care at 5-6 years of age, and I can say that the series has left unimaginable influence ever since. And I can honestly say that Pokemon did not really hit me as a child so strongly with other kids at that time because I was watching through Silver Fang and Silver Fang left so much deeper impression. And I can say that Silver Fang is certainly the main reason why I started to watch anime at age 17-18. And certainly the biggest reason why I started to draw my own webcomics. Even though I'm a 26-year-old, I can still go back to this series and I usually have to look at this series at least once a year. And I do not know about you, but for myself, episodes 5 and 6 are just those episodes that I prefer to skip. (It's probably strange that this ninja dog saga does not bother me as much as anyone else.)

Also, I must say that this review was pretty well done and quite accurate. This show isn't the most subtle and the writing is not the most delicate but then again, that's not the main reason to watch this show. The main reasons to watch it are the over the top samurai violence, action and mindless fun! The huge cast definitely is the biggest hinderance for the anime and many of the characters are completely forgotten about. As someone who has also read the manga I can say that some of these issues are not present in that to nearly the same extent but it still does fail certain supporting characters like Bill and Bemu who are pretty underdeveloped even in the manga and end up being merely tools to build up the threat of later villains. I'll eagerly wait for your review of Weed! As I've both watched the anime version and read the manga version, I feel that the anime adaptation of it had even more of the same issues that GNG anime adaptation had.

Lol same here, it had both swedish and norwegian dubs. The series that introduced me to anime, i remember renting it with my aunt in the mid 90s and despite that it was brutal we both enjoyed it. One of the very best anime i've ever seen even to this date. Exciting and great build up with some over the top parts but yet awesome action.

Excellent review! One of my favorite shows when I was young, the show was really popular in Finland. Too bad the Finnish dub sucks balls and they also cut out a lot of stuff leaving wide gaps in the plot. It made me so confused as a kid, haha. One thing you should have said though; the soundtrack fucking rules. A lot of anime features amazing music but GNG has some of the best music ever! Because I saw your review a while back I had to watch the show again and then the opening song got stuck in my head and of course I had to turn it into metal, haha. I subbed, quality content sir!

Excellent summary overall! You encapsulated pretty much everything this show stands to be; outlandish and violent but a hell of a lot of fun. I will beg to differ on Cross at certain points, who was still better written and a lot more progressive than other female characters in shounen at the time, and even in Yoshi's later works where, //SPOILERS// they're either killed off as cannon fodder for male angst or just downright useless. Even if she doesn't fight 100% percent of the time she still contributes, (She swam from the mainland all the way to Hokkaido when she was pregnant just to warn Gin/Silver about the fallen platoon, and she's the only reason Ben even got his eyesight back in time for the final battle), being able to throw a punch doesn't necessarily make for a good female character, and she's still a lot more fleshed out than our main, who replaces Ben at the head of the pack instead of a more experienced dog because he's "da chosen juan". Just my two-cents though. Loved the video, the editing was great.

Thank you! I am very glad you like the video. As for your comment, I rewatched the segment and figured you deserve a response on this. Please excuse the oncoming textwall. You are right in that I, in places, do not phrase myself particularly well regarding the show's treatment of Cross, and especially the "completely useless for the rest of the show" line should have been cut in light of a few other events like swimming across the ocean as you mention. We're also both forgetting to mention her rescuing Black Jackal's puppy. This is actually where the "I am a bitch after all" line is from, which makes this a case of me using a line out of context to enforce a point, something I definitely should have caught and corrected as well. I blame this on me doing a somewhat shoddy script editing job. Entirely my bad, and thank you for pointing it out. In my defense, though, I never call Cross a weak character, or at least I don' try to. At the end of the whole rant, I sum it up by lamenting that "the series' treatment of some of its more interesting characters" is inexcusable, stating my displeasure with her lack of focus rather than her actual character, which is the part I do like and that I wish we go to see more of. I am not calling her a weak female as a direct result of a lack of fight scenes. I have never subscribed to the school of though that "female strength" has to necessarily equate to "showing masculine traits", and anyone who knows me personally can tell you I have gone on more than one rant about this unfortunate tendency in media. Hell, many of my favorite female characters in various franchises are among the more traditionally feminine, with Pearl of Steven Universe (who is designed as a pastel blue and pink ballerina with the most obvious motherly personality traits) being the most obvious example. Still, we have to keep the context Cross is presented in and what kind of show this is in mind. It's a story about a group of people voluntarily signing up to take part in a battle against much larger, much deadlier, much more vicious opponents in an all-out war that all of them are perfectly aware will mean, violent battle , struggle, heartbreak, loss and death. The show then goes on to specifically presen Cross as a fighter, one who showed so many of the qualities that the leader of this pack deemed necessary that she broke his preconceptions about the qualities of females enough that she is the only female allowed into the pack to take part of said battle. And yet, after all of this buildup, Cross gets what can generously be described as half a fight scene, one or two actions that could, in theory, have been performed by any random character and then proceeds to get written out of the equation with a convenient out-of-nowhere pregnancy in order to keep her out of the battle she signed up to take part of to begin. This, to me at least, is quite a disservice to a character that has shown a lot of promise - masculine as well as feminine. Even with there being far worse examples out there at the time. Though now that I think about it, I think she actually might have more scenes of importance than poor Smith. And yes, Cross is definitely more developed than Gin / Silver. But so's the bowl of stale oatmeal on my kitchen counter that I forgot to clean up this morning. That's barely a feat. Anyway, sorry for going on about this, but I wanted to make my intentions perfectly clear. Thanks for taking interest. I hope you enjoy my other videos as well. - Esh

Look up "ginga nagareboshi parody comic by isismashiro deviantart" IsisMashiro is an artist in deviant art that makes funny comics about lots of franchises and shows like the ginga series(he is finnish and the giga series became popular in finland)(note:im not finnish, im the only filipino who loves the ginga series) It basically tells the story of the anime but with many funny scenarios and character updates like riki and smith(old)became an alcoholic, cross is short tempered and hates sexists(she rages when chutora refused to fight her because she is a girl and then constantly hit chutora in the head with a skillet/frying pan), sniper is a german general who sometimes talks german ,Ben became dumb and blind and adressed John as "rin-tin-tin", Kogas are pervs who loves reading dog porno mags and fight the Igas to steal their wide dog porno mag collection and Akame burned the iga house along with the porno mags thus making the kogas jump into the fire and look at hot dog booty before they become hot dogs literally in a few seconds Read it, its funny and is quite the summary to the whole ginga nagareboshi gin dog talking arc

while this show shouldnt be seen as dog fighting since theyre anthropomorphized dohgs, in yoshihiro takahashis other works he tends to glorify actual dog fighting and when dogs are faced with abuse the humans, unlike daisuke who protested and didnt like it at all, thinks its cool and cheers it on. yoshihiro obviously likes dog fighting or thinks its cool, which might be why he made a manga about dogs having wars

Andromeda Cosmos I made the subs based on the danish dubbed DVDs I own. In these, Cross is refered to with the danish term for "bitch" as in the technical term for a female dog, which in danish can similarly also be used as an insult. It just helped a joke along.

no mention about the AWESOME MUSIC? or what, is it just nostalgia boners I get from hearing it? BTW, I kinda prefer the beginning of the show, before the dogs can talk, 'cause I liked Daisuke, his determination, his companionship with his dog, the mentor/nanny relationship with his grandpa and that Doctor guy, Hidetoshi. I love the show, but I feel the human characters deserved more screentime.

As a Manga reader and anime watcher.....Silver Fang is....INCREDIBLE as a manga...the violence and gore is goddamm upped to the max in it the art is intense af and incredible bc of it..the story goes much more into depth about some things..and holy hell of the character deaths don't somehow feel even sadder in the manga...(like even tho it lacks music...it feels so harrowing) also it has an entire arc after the war that explains the origins of the battouga(Or should i say battougas yes there are multiple different ones other than Zetsu) and it has wolves with almost mystical powers and it has a damm vulcano and it's just batshit crazy and i love it!

Needless to say, as far as underrated as this show (as well as its Manga series does seem) is, I have seen and heard that some of the folks talk about that series itself does have a few problems within its franchise (sometimes the sexism and even the whole "Forgiveness in Abusing" thing), but despite most of its flaws that it does have, this Anime (along with its Sequel) was part of my Young Teenhood as a whole, I got into its Fandom around 12 years old at the time after finishing the whole series and I loved it! This franchise also made Me love Other Mature Dark Animals that had a similar theme to it (like Watership Down for instance), made Me love all Japanese Cultures, and it was probably the whole reason I became a Huge Dog Lover at the Time (I have Two Dogs who are German Shepherds like John and Jerome). I haven't read its whole Manga series yet despite Me who has only seen the Anime but not the Mangas (wish I had an English Translation of Them). Also, Fun Fact; Akitas were usually seen at the time as Bear Hunters besides than being Man's Best Friend which probably inspired the whole series of an idea of Akitas being Dog Leaders. I mainly like the whole concept of this franchise as a whole Dog version of Old Japanese Warrior War stories. I have not seen the Anime (along its sequel) in a long time but maybe an English Translation of it would be easy (despite the series' flaws, it's always part of an underrated genre where Animals fight to survive) but it has been so long since I have both of them since I'm now a days barely in its Fandom but hopefully I could watch it again some other time, the series was such a wild ride to begin with when I started to read Other Animal Stories (Good times).

Is this the origin of the “crazy bear named red helm trope”? Because Monster Hunter has the Redhelm Arzuros and bravely default has an enemy called redhelm that’s a recolor of the grizzly bear enemy.

Is there any way to watch your subtitled episodes? By the looks of it you have made higher quality subtitles than any of the other fansubs I've seen

I'm afraid not - I only wrote subtitles for the clips used in these videos, and that was ages ago.

They were simply on sale briefly in Denmark years ago. Even if you find them they contain only Japanese, Swedish and Danish dubs.

I know but determination always wins! I mean have you even seen the animation community for this series? the amount of spin offs and fan animations are crazy and awesome you should just see a couple of them boy does it bring back good old nostalgia.

This show reminded me about Berserk but with dogs. In Finland this show was really popular. I was born in 1989 and if somebody hums the song most of todays adults will go crazy over with. We had 4 VHSs but most of the violent stuff was censored like the decapitations. Pretty good review but how you dare you say Moss is a dumbass one of my favorite characters. He was so warm a fatherfigure when he took care of the puppies! Gohei is also great character. He was crazy but at some points he was really soft and gentle. But why Ross's arc is sexist? It annoys me that if female character ends up being a good mother that is somehow sexist but if she becomes a forced masculine powerhouse it's somehow great? Well this show was made up when things were not gone so overboard with nonsense about gender politics. I liked Ross too and I like her today. I watched the anime again and it is really hard to judge it because I grew up with it. Everything feels great the music, action and characters. But yes I admit that low animation quality at some places and the ridicilous superpowers lessen the show's potential. At the 90's main characters used to be one dimensional heroes with no flaws and yes it annoyed me too.

@FictionAddiction

That's meant to reference Jason Voorhees of the Friday the 13th movie. If you look at the table, there is also a video game controller, a fantasy style dagger and a comic book, meant to shwo the variety of subjects the show might cover.
