CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Tevye's daughters yearn for a perfect romantic match.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Norman Jewison's adaptation of the long-running Broadway musical is set in the Ukranian ghetto village of Anatevka (the film was actually lensed in Yugoslavia). Israeli actor Topol repeats his London stage role as Tevye the milkman, whose equilibrium is constantly being challenged by his poverty, the prejudicial attitudes of non-Jews, and the romantic entanglements of his five daughters. Whenever the weight of the world becomes too much for him, Tevye carries on lengthy conversations with God, who does not answer but is at least more willing to listen than the milkman's remonstrative wife Golde. After arranging a marriage between his oldest daughter Tzeitel and wealthy butcher Lazar Wolf, Tevye is forced to do some quick rearranging when the girl falls in love with poor tailor Motel Kamzoil. Fancying himself more broad-minded than his gentile oppressors, Tevye cannot accept the notion that his other daughter Chava would want to marry Fyedka, a non-Jew. And after shouting the praises of "tradition," Tevye must change his tune-and his entire life-when he and his neighbors are forced out of Anatevka by the Czar's minions. Topol's co-stars include Norma Crane as Golde, Yiddish theater legend Molly Picon as Yente the matchmaker, and Leonard Frey as Motel.
CREDITS:

Cast: Rosalind Harris, Michele Marsh, Molly Picon, Neva Small
Director: Norman Jewison
Producers: Norman Jewison, Patrick J. Palmer, Walter Mirisch

@OreadNYC

Yes, they did...but if you pay close attention, each sister pays a higher price for her choice than the one before her. Tzeitel's parents are very ambivalent about her choice. Hodel is compelled to leave her home and family and travel a long way to be with the man of her choice. Chava is disowned by her father for falling in love with and marrying a Christian man. In the original collection of stories on which this is based, the fourth sister (Shprintze) is unfortunate enough to fall desperately in love with the son of a family wealthier than her own -- the young man toys with her and then abandons her, prompting her to drown herself in despair.

@@BlueBrainMountainStream The children of Adam and Eve would have had married each other. There are no laws against sibling marriage at this point, given there’s few negative defects in the gene pool. Starting from early Genesis, the life span of everyone has deceased substantially, this was accelerated by the restriction of the gene pool to Noah’s sons and daughters. When the time was proper God gave them laws, because nobody knew close genes were more likely to conflict.

@@OreadNYC "Chava is disowned by her father for falling in love with and marrying a Christian man." When I saw the film, I wasn't paying much attention, I thought the reason why Tevye didn't allow Chava to marry Fyedka is because he already let Tzeitel and Hodel marry Motel and Perchik, and they end up leaving. Tevye didn't want Chava to leave the family, so he didn't let her marry Fyedka. Until someone pointed out that the real reason is because Chava is Jewish and Fyedka is a Christian, so those two can't marry each other, because they have different religions. Tzeitel was allowed to marry Motel; and Hodel was allowed to marry Perchik, because they're still both Jewish, and the matchmaking was just a minor thing. Not to mention, I literally thought Perchik was a Christian. But I at least know now.

Tzeitel here is actually having a rational response to a system in which, she can foresee, her family will fall through the cracks. Oddly though, I wonder if she's only able to think about it because she'd long since decided to break away from this system, and found her own match. I'm told that people often tend to leap before they look.

I think Tzeitel was just channeling what Yente would say when she would tell a poor girl about her potential match, while deflecting the topic about their potential matches. Hodel and Chava got scared at the prospects of a match with men whom are unappealing. Tzeitel did break the mold when she and Motel got married. Soon Hodel and Perchik followed the mold. As upset as Tevye was, he took comfort knowing that both Motel and Perchik were Jewish. It was Chava's marriage to Fyedka that made him unable to accept it because she married interfaith and he felt like she abandoned Judaism.
