I started work at Fields in 1961as technical librarian. The first time I flew was on an Ambassador test flight that the crew agreed to take me on stressing that I wouldn't be insured. I remember Douglas Bader flying from there and being horrified because he peed up the side of his aircraft before setting off and Hughie Green as a regular. Particularly remember one occasion when he boarded with a very glamorous young lady in very high heels who was holding a bird I a cage. Happy days.

Good to see where I worked all those years ago! (early 60's) On occasion used to see Douglas Bader, then a director of Shell Aviation, drive up in his Bristol car, unload his golf clubs and jump in his Beech Travel Air G-APUB. Oh the nostalgia!

ClassicAviationTV Thanks for the info. I know the name, Don Milford, but can't picture him. Getting him confused with Arthur Heath - a true gent.

Hi Jim, we worked together with Ted Barfield back in 1969, seems an age ago! Also remember Bader, particularly as he used to march down the corridor and let the door swing back in your face if you were behind him. Also Peter Whittaker, who was my boss and really wound me up. Happy days!

+Jim LOFTS Used to work in one of the offices in the middle Hangar I think it was, in the 60's as office clerk and also took dictation from Douglas Bader. Remember some of the maintenance crew well and an incident involving Frank Sinatra and Mia Farrow desirous of being flown to Paris although Sinatra had forgotten his passport. Lizzie

Wonderful film which brought back many happy memories. I was with McAlpine at EGGW and used to visit Fields regularly. I flew Paul McCartney and many others long since forgotten out of LHR. I was very friendly with Trevor Ware CP DeBeers and used to occasionally freelance for them when they needed cabin crew, ditto FJC. Happy days. Wonderful memories. Thanks so much.

+vrccb I remember sitting on the tailgate of our Transit van on the EJC ramp very late one wintery night waiting for a certain HS125 to arrive to take Paul McC on to the highlands, I thought he was in the lounge waiting to be called but when I looked up from my frozen dream like stupor I realised he had sat himself next to me on the tailgate. We had an interesting chat for 10 mins or so before the aircraft arrived.

Excellent film Steve; but I think the early part of it must be pre-1980 as the BA TriStar is wearing its British airways titles and as I recall they dropped the airways and went just British in 1980. Some great clips of the old and then new base; Teneco HS125? Shell HS125, FJC Falcon 20E; Learjet 35 (Jointair?) and Citation.

Andy, not sure about the date. Could be '79. I joined Fields mid-'78. There was another Learjet operator based there, EDS? I see the then chief pilot for Shell is now a Councilor.Lovely stuff!

Great film! I'd love to be able to use some clips in a project I'm working on. Can share details, but would love to see about getting permission. Thanks!
