Forward observers had absolutely insane casualty rates, those guys had balls

Artillery officers in the modern Army typically cycle through all the different positions in this team so they have experience in each. Enlisted men are sort of stuck in their role at any one these three but they gain a lot more expertise as a result.

Much much much cheaper. Rockets/missile units are usually used for high priority targets designated by higher echelons. Cannon batteries are more responsive and better to support the smaller maneuver units during ops. We use a combination of both in large scale conflict to cover all weaknesses in each platform. Also, mortars are some of the best platforms we can use to support ground operations. They’re quicker than cannons, can pack up and move quickly, and can sling lots of rounds fast if needed. The disadvantage is a lack of range. All three types of indirect fire combined provide the best results rather than only investing in one capability!
