Lot's of great changes here AND I just found out it's definitely compatible with the Strongholds of the Samurai + Expanded Japan mods so this is honestly a brilliant addition from a battle mechanics & improvements point of view. Let me know what you think below and subscribe for more just like this!

I’d recommend some other mods and changes that significantly advanced my experience that I want to share. First, I’d recommend playing with times 2.5 unit sizes (if your pc can handle it) because normally in Shogun 2, due to some glitch, the game doesn’t let you stay in Yari wall because of the unit’s increased size. But with the Field Command: Sengoku Mod, your spearmen are automatically in Yari wall. So you can have these MASSIVE battles, believe me it makes a HUGE Difference. Then I would recommend the ‘Starting Units As They Should Be’ Mod. This mod adds a Clan’s specialised unit to their starting army. For example, Date get Nodachi, Takeda get Fire Cav, Oda get Long Yari, Uesugi get Naginata Warrior monks, etc. It gives the Mighty Clans a fun head start. Next, to compensate for the increased unit sizes, I’d add the “Bigger Campaign Battle Maps” mod. As the name suggests, it expands campaign battle maps greatly. We’re taking like a hundred times bigger than normal. This not only allows you to choose a good spot for the battle, such as a flat plain or forested hill (which in vanilla you may not be able to, due to the limits of deployment zones and the battlefield). But it also prevents the annoying inconvenience when large enemy armies stretch their lines from border to border, preventing you from flanking them (unless the enemy takes a defensive position on a hill close to the border). It also greatly benefits the immersion, where you often don’t feel boxed in, but rather actually fighting on an endless field (which it isn’t, but the illusion is there). Then, id recommend the mod named “Realistic range(honnkaku_syatei)”. This mod buffs Matchlocks and nerfs Bows. Essentially, guns have a longer range than bows. Which is a lot more realistic. But this doesn’t mean that bows are useless, as they still do plenty of damage when the enemy closes in, and cover fire whilst the gunners reload (which is also how they were used in real life). This mod will make you hesitate to do full frontal assaults on enemies with matchlocks, and force you to find a way to close the distance or catch them by surprise, which is again true to real life. Finally, id recommend the extended camera mod. Which is l always on for me, regardless of the mod. But here it helps with the extended maps as you can quickly reach the other side of the map with the camera. Plus it’s way more cinematic. Anyways, these are the mods I would recommend using with the mods recommended by the developers. They greatly enhanced my game. In fact, typing this made me crave starting a new campaign. So just trust me :D.

I don't know if I would agree with your statement that bows had shorter ranges than muskets, can you share your source? I will say your other suggestions sound like a whole lot of fun lol

I'm silly, it's in the mod description.

@@codfish322 Ok so essentially, gunners had a maximum range of 500m (however, at this range bullets didn’t really do damage), then its range of effectiveness (where bullets start doing damage) is 200m, whilst the most effective range known as “the kill zone” where death or serious injury is assured is 50m. For bows, the maximum range is 380m, the range of effectiveness is 80m, and the effective range is 30m. The problem with the arquebus wasn’t its range, that was its great strength. It was the rate of fire. So Oda Nobunaga realised that to use the arquebus to its maximum effect, he would have to use them en masse. However, this didn’t mean he was replacing the bow. Nobunaga had a system called cycle fire. Where whilst the gunners would reload he would have his archers fire to cover them. Which gave his enemy the effect of never ending fire. This system works in game to devastating effect. The gunners do plenty of damage with their range, but the real damage starts when the enemy gets in range of your archers. However, remember that the enemy will also get guns pretty fast, so they may also be using this strategy, which you need to find a counter for. I took inspiration from Uesugi Kenshin’s water strategy at Tedorigawa where he defeated Oda Nobunaga. Now off course you can’t use water the same way in shogun 2. But I used cavalry. I lured the enemy’s gunners further away from their main line and then surprise charged them with my cavalry who was hiding in a nearby forested area. Forcing the enemy to send in their melee troops who were soon obliterated by my gunners and archers. Hope this helps with the historical context of how the arquebus was used in Samurai warfare to help your game be more immersive. Goodluck and have fun

I just picked up shogun 2 a few weeks ago as my first total war PC game (I could only play the mobile ones 💀) and watched your master of strategy mod and I’ve been absolutely hooked on it, I’ve been playing it with the MOSS compatible strongholds of the samurai and a very large unit pack collection that adds in units from other popular mods specifically rebalanced for moss. TO TOP IT OFF I’ve downloaded a lot of the fourstrider Japan mods (new campaign music, ui sfx, three kingdoms esque general portraits). I’ve basically created my perfect total war, thank you so much for making these mod videos you really deserve more recognition!

I appreciate when people give Shogun some love, since that was a last good hurrah of CA focusing on the little details giving the game character with cutscenes and little details! :D This looks cool in a lot of aspects, and while I love historical accuracy I have noticed a tendency with some mods to swing too much in the other direction at the cost of some gameplay, and submods to restore the features you mentioned would be a great compromise! Will give it a look, but especially watch if they develop any of these compromises in the future, and how they progress!

Im kinda wary of the "historical accuracy" claim whenever its Shogun 2. Granted theres a huge language barrier for JP historiography and those that get translated are pop history Stephen Turnbull types. Sees nagae-gumi in dozen man rank and not in two rank formation. Sees missile troops on the flanks of nagae-gumi blocks like its a 1on1 copy of a european pike&shot. Ditches the cooler looking nobori banner for the archaic and stiff looking nagare-bata. Still see the armies are samurai-heavy instead of being gumigashira or kiba-tai. Sees uma-jirushi banner which should be only near the taisho be toted around like an ordinary banner. Still didnt fix the ahistorical Uesugi mon orientation. Alot of uniformity in banners and armor colors I guess Nobunaga's Ambition Sphere of Influence and its combined arms units are much more better in portraying Sengokgu Jidai armies, even though its battle system is woefully half-assed compared to Total War.
@MisterKisk4 ай бұрын
The main problem with the Total War system and doing Sengoku Jidai warfare, is that it does not accurately represent the sonae system utilized at the time. Each unit should ideally just be a sonae composed of combined arms, but that can't really be done in the engine. There's one mod I've found where the compromise is basically an army itself is just a sonae, and the troops ranks have been limited to only being two ranks. But then they've also limited unit size as well (because using too many men in that wide of a rank makes it unwieldy). The problem doing it this way, is that then battles feel significantly smaller than they should be, even if you have the 40 unit army setting turned on. An better compromise system for a Sengoku game would be just recruiting sonae that each has their own general (so like you'd have Gamo Ujisato, or Ikeda Tsuneoki and they'd each just have their own sonae), and then the main commander of the army being the Daimyo or a Soutaisho (who would have their honjin sonae), and then you would just order those sonae to move as necessary on the battlefield. The "weapon type" composition of each sonae would probably have to be abstracted in some way with this, though maybe a little granularity with customizing it could be done. Essentially something like the first Kessen game on PS2. I feel that a battle system from Kessen 1, being de-coupled from the narrative story-telling part, and combining it with a proper sandbox campaign map from Nobunaga's Ambition (or even Shogun 2) could make for a really excellent Sengoku game.
@christopheralfonsocastro15234 ай бұрын
@@MisterKisk thats true and thats a brilliant idea for a sengoku battle system. Hence im just kinda tired when modders and youtubers here tout "historical accuracy" on Shogun 2 when its very foundation is just reskinned Napoleon TW :P We tried a crack at it with the Sekigahara Campaign Mod. Drastically reduced samurai troop counts, hero units are renamed to famous daimyo/retainers but the unit system and riggidity to weapon type units and sandbox is still there. Ironic, Shogun 3 with Three Kingdoms TW mechanics would be almost there.

@@christopheralfonsocastro1523 Agreed with the historical accuracy part. But I think it applies to the other games in Total War as well. I'm going to use modern army designations for ease of communicating the sizes, even though I know it's not really accurate to pre-modern warfare. I think a big disconnect in the game is, battles essentially depict what amounts to a Regimental or even Large Battalion level of command (and micromanagement control), but the outcome of the battle is supposed to represent what's happened with a Divisional level of command. And I get it, the Regiment/Large Battalion scope gives the ability for a lot of eye candy and control on individual unit positioning, but it ultimately is just a rock-paper-scissors system that is mostly dictated by unit composition combined with actions per minute. I'd like to see a future game where specific weapons that units use don't really matter, and what's more important is your positioning on terrain and utilization of formations matters instead.

Turnbull's latest books from the past several years aren't that bad, though. He has acknowledged he has made many mistakes and false assumptions in the past and now has a good research team helping him out with the primary sources and he's familiarized himself with the latest Western and Japanese secondary sources. He still makes some mistakes and gives way too much credit to dramatic descriptions from the epic war tales which are full of exaggerations, but still, much better than his books from the 90s and early 2000s. Thomas Conlan is a good academic author on the topic of samurai history, but he too has made quite a few mistakes, so he isn't much better.

Nah, this is nowhere accurate. Sonaes, the most common units were mixed combined arms. So if we have a yari unit it will be composed of teppos bows yaris and katanas but play a more yari role. What i think it should be done is based on types of sonaes, they can be mixed arms but rotating its abilities by stance such as forming yari wall while shooting, light skirmish frontline sonaes being more lightly equipped. Samurais were also present in sonaes as higher ranking commanders and had contingents inside sonaes as samurais. But its really hard to unfk the history blob dump of total war 😂

Yari wall is absolutely a historical formation, in Japanese it's called yaribusuma 槍衾, so I can't comprehend why they've removed it... And if they've removed the Fire by rank ability (fair enough, it's not historical), then maybe they can at least add the "Kneel fire" from FOTS?
