This is something I never thought I'd see, but am so happy is an actual thing! Portugal as a fully playable faction in Total War Shogun 2, and it feels just awesome. Even though I love Shogun 2's campaign, I always wanted a bit more spice to it since, let's be frank, the factions here can start to feel a bit samey after a few hundred hours in the game. And what's better then, than to introduce an entirely new one, and one that feels and plays so differently?
Portugal is all about fire power, but still, you're not OP unless we're talking on the high seas, because Portugal begins with just one island city, and a tiny army.
It's up to you to take Portugal further, and to deliver Christianity and Western power to the Japans, or at the very least die trying. If you're like me and have been watching Shogun the TV show, and wanted to spice up your campaign a little, then this is the perfect mod for you, and you can find it right here. I think that for some realism, there can be different playstyle mechanics for the Portuguese. While they can have the best units in the game (Tercos), they won’t be able to recruit them, making them rely on local subordinate militias and occasional reinforcements from Portugal

I imagine it’ll play like Marcus Wolfheart from total war Warhammer, with the actual “Portuguese” units coming from various supply ships from the homeland with any gaps being plugged by local levy’s and militias and high grade mercenary units and ronin that take a large chunk out of the treasury.

The Tercios are a Spanish invention, it makes no sense to see Portugal with units with that name until long after the Iberian Union. I have read that the Japanese called all the Catholics who arrived on their shores as "Portuguese" regardless of whether they were truly Portuguese or Spanish, so there it would make more sense that there were Tercios, but it might be more a Japanese misinterpretation than anything else.

actually the tercos were instituted by King Sebastian, the Alcacer Quibir dude, in about 1570. As far as things go regarding Shogun 2, you are right, until let`s say several years after 1570 they should not be available.

Military formations tactics get imitated by everyone. Tercios were fought off by the Dutch with their own imitations and then later copying the Roman Maniple to be more flexblible than the Tercio

@@magniwalterbutnotwaltermag1479 I'm not saying otherwise, but it's one thing to call something an imitation and another to call it literally "Tercios", especially because of the very early date in which they put it in the game (before 1570); the correct thing is to call the unit "Portuguese arquebusier" without further references to something that doesn't correspond to it. Now, there is a misunderstanding due to a lack of understanding of the Tercios, which makes one think that the Dutch reform (which is only a modification that simplifies the tactics of the Tercios, to better adjust to the lack of pikemen and the large number of musketeers that used to be in the Dutch rebel army due to so much siege warfare) is like going from the Falange which is supposedly allegorical of the Spanish model that has its origin in the Ordinance of 1536 (which in turn is an improvement of the Coronelias created by the true father of Modern Warfare who is Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba), to the Roman manipulos which is represented by the model of the Battalions introduced by Maurice de Nassau. However, this is an error in the military history books of British-French tradition (Geoffrey Parker and Rene Quatrefages), which has nothing to do with the most up-to-date studies on the Tercios, which are from the Italo-Spanish school (Eduardo Mesa Gallego, Davide Maffi, Julio Albi de la Cuesta, etc.). The truth is that if we have to compare an Early Modern tactic with the Phalanages, then the closest to that is the one used by the Swiss pikemen and the German Landskenets, then the Tercios would be equal to the crude but still complexly flexible Roman Manipulos (they are far from being that inflexible pike mace, as they were the companies their true military unit, which was grouped in different formations according to the circumstances as in the Battle of Jemmingen in 1568), while the Dutch Reformation would be closer to the Marius Reforms with the Roman Cohorts (a more refined and practical tactic to enhance firearms) and what Gustav Adolf II did would be like the Late Roman tactics used by the Byzantines (that is, almost a Line infantry with great artillery support); I hope that now it is clear and free of any confusion.

Best mod for shogun 2!! I'm surprised no one has reviewed it sooner! I would highly recommend the Portugal redux mod that compliments the original faction mod for a more refreshed campaign that makes portugal even more of an unstoppable force with matchlock buffs and allowing the pikemen units to form yari wall. The redux also exponentially increases the value of trade nodes, so trading with unreasonable AI is no longer a problem!

Oh hey, my mod. I did the Redux version based on the original to fix several issues with it. Having to fix those issues led me into modding, which led to me making several total overhauls (The Gunpei and Arcturia mods) and many other smaller mods. Some of my favorites are the ones where I ported the units from the other campaigns into each other, so you could use FoTS units in RoTS for example (I really want to see someone try using RoTS in FoTS). I don't recall if in the uploaded version the change I later made to turn the merchant militia into militia pikemen and the other gun unit into militia matchlocks was implemented or not. I do know part of the reason the gunners are so effective is because I enabled All Ranks Fire, so not just the front rank can shoot. It always bugged the hell out of me that despite having a clear line of sight and historically as many as 4 ranks could fire at once the arbitrary checkbox prevents the 2nd rank from firing (Something mounted gunners don't suffer from, so vanilla mounted gunners can all fire even when dismounted). IIRC the gunners have Kneel Fire, which will reliably allow 3 ranks deep formations to all fire.

Arquebusiers can become quite OP especially with master archery resource + hunting lodge. I steamroll everything with a full stack and they are now better than samurais themselves in melee lol

If you want to trade with ai in shogun that does not want to trade from the start there is 2 reliable ways to getting good trade deals. 1 is you need resources that ai wants (warhorses) and they will even pay you plenty of extra. 2 If you defeat AI main army/commander they often want peace deal and take often trade agreement as part of that peace deal (but wont pay you money in this case)

Pikes have longer reach, so pikemen every time. Plus the armor, and better stats overall. The entire faction is god mode, arquebusiers being completely undefeatable unless you actively try to lose.

It should be Spain instead of Portugal. Yes, I know that Portugal arrived in Japan before Spain, but the Portuguese were never interested in conquering it militarily to create a colony there, something that Spain was interested in, with plans to create a Japanese Viceroyalty and spread Catholicism. On the other hand, if the mod is after 1580 and before 1640, Portugal was integrated as another Kingdom in the Hispanic Monarchy, ergo it would make sense to see Portuguese among the Spanish troops.

as a Portguese person, i love my countries history and Empire we once had. we got so weak once Spain and Portugal join.. Spain made us weak

Let us not notice the very subjective perspective that the Portuguese have of their history: first because it was Portugal that weakened itself by its crazy Moroccan adventures, which led to their being conquered and second because they were two separate crowns with the same king, which means that it was up to the Portuguese themselves to defend their colonies and they did not fall before because Spain always sent reinforcement troops as happened several times in Brazil. What happens is that the Portuguese subsidies never liked to cooperate in the defense and when Spain wanted them to get serious about the war, they preferred to separate again (which did not help them, because the Dutch kept attacking them anyway). Now, don't tell me that "the wars are Spain's fault", that is a half-truth, because sooner or later some other European power would end up attacking you for seeing your weakness (you had been in decline since the middle of the 16th century and it was the union with Spain that prevented the fall from being catastrophic). You only remember all the bad, but nothing of the amount of resources and men that Spain put into helping you in those 60 years (you are ungrateful).

This MOD is historically wrong, the only power capable of projecting enough military power in the 16th century to be able to carry out an attempt to conquer Japan, is the Kingdom of Spain, not Portugal (that's why the Portuguese only created isolated trading ports and factories, rather than conquering a large area, unless it was Brazil or an island). Even something that I always disliked about Shogun 2, is that it calls the Portuguese arquebusiers "Tercios", when that was an entirely Spanish unit, not Portuguese. The only way this all makes sense, is if the game were set after 1580 (after the Iberian Union between Spain and Portugal), because then the Portuguese would have been able to project power thanks to being integrated into the Spanish kingdom, plus the Portuguese adopted the Tercio after that.

But I say, it's the same as if a New Zealander or a Canadian were to comment on British history... they are their ancestors after all, plus it's not necessary to be from a country to know the history of your ancestral motherland. P.S.: I like the MOD anyway, although we'll have to see how varied the "Portuguese" units are, but from what I can see the ones it has are really strong (if you take into account those in the original Shogun 2 as well). CA really missed the opportunity to release a Japan 17th century campaign along with Korea and some European factions like Netherlands (Taiwan), Portugal (Macao) or Spain (in Philippines) and perhaps also China with Manchuria.

Also I know about kneel fire, I literally play the game, and it means that the first line fires, kneels, second line fires. In this video even the 3rd and 4th line fires. That never happens in vanilla.
