Field Maple sometimes seem a poor relation as far as bonsai go but they are beautiful trees and make great bonsai if given a chance.

Sound advice for sure. In Connecticut I feel the same way about the Norway Maple. “Tough as old boots”. Thanks

Wonderful little trees Sid, and yes, a lot less worrying than Japanese maples can be...though I do love them so. Stay safe indeed 💖😊👍💖🐾🐾

Hi Sid. Really good advice on using local maples. In my area, with extreme heat to 34c to a wintertime of -25c it is somewhat difficult to bonsai. Lost alot of trees at first. My neighbour's maple tree seeds fall on my yard, sprout and I dig them up to learn how to bonsai. At first, I use to cuss about all those seeds germinating in my flower and veg gardens, but not now. A win win situation. Very Good advice Sid to all of us newbies.

Yes we have the same problem in australia. Keep to the natives of the country less dead trees.

Hi Sid I think there is some snobbery about some trees the field maple being one of them along with Lonicera and field elm as you say they are the best trees to start with but they are not what the novice would choose, they want Japanese maples etc which is a shame as they are harder to look after and will most likely put them off carrying on with the hobby, I have a field maple with small leaves it is an old tree on a rock so they will reduce in time and they can be colourful in spring and autumn.

You are so right. Very underated as bonsai. Strong and versatile trees that should be used more. Stay safe

I like your field maples! Not sure if they are available here One of the more striking features to my eyes are the trunks
@SidsTrees
@SidsTrees 4 жыл бұрын
Developing the trunk first is time well spent I think. Many rush to grow branches and develop ramification on a straight "stick" stay safe.

Love the field maples Sid. I planted some as a group/forest planting early in the year. Would love advice on how to proceed with its care. I think they were 3/4 yr saplings.

Field maple are fairly robust trees as bonsai but really hate wet roots in my experience. Growth can be a little coarse and internodes extend quickly if not pruned regularly. Also has a tendency to produce a lot of buds in one place at joints which will need thinning to prevent "knuckles " forming. Some useful information here. www.allthingsbonsai.co.uk/bonsai-tree-species-care-guides/field-maple-bonsai-tree-care/. Stay safe.

I have had problems with mildew on my Field Maple group. I sprayed it with a mix of bicarbonate/soap/cooking oil. It looked really awful I ended up taking all the damaged leaves off. Same with my Hawthorne group. I think they may have been in too much shade together with hot muggy weather. Have you had any problems with mildew?
@SidsTrees
@SidsTrees 2 жыл бұрын
I have had a little, mostly on a few of my Oaks and a couple of Hawthorn. I understand it is usually caused by the plants being too dry in hot weather. I think once you have it the best thing is to remove the affected leaves and allow the plant to regenerate. I've heard of using milk to spray on the leaves but always thought it was a bit of an old wives tale. Stay safe
