SB-3: Well-played pair of mirror image games. Good exercise in "the other side of the hill." On this game, I agree with your conclusion about your ability to generate double-teams in the center. Though you understated your better handling of the village in the center of battle (let's call it Tnomuoguoh, or bizarro Hougoumont). Surprisingly, nobody occupied it with lights units (or his larger missile troops). Am I correct that archers in that village would be a problem for the English (or lights for either opponent)? Or the crossbowman if the defensive advantages of the village are insufficient to outweigh the archer's/light's melee shortcomings? I am less sure that his force selection, against an enemy against whom he had limited intel, was that crucial. It was not the Jimmies and Joes -- it was the head coach. I thought the biggest factor in the battle was your neutralizing (and even outfighting) his heavy cavalry with your outnumbered heavy cavalry, lights, and spearmen. You largely kept him out of your backfield while simultaneously inflicting heavier casualties and forcing him to reinforce what should have been his strong wing. That compromised his left-center after his right-center collapsed around Tnomuogouh. 1. Relative to his Normans, your Normans were much stronger in cavalry and missile troops at the expense of fewer dismounted knights. The heavy cavalry were decisive. 2. Relative to his English, your English were stronger in heavy cavalry (which really helped you against his heavy cavalry) and weaker in raw spearmen. A successful trade of quality for quantity. 3. You were the aggressor in both games and it favored you. As the Norman aggressor, you marched right around and through Tnomuoguoh whereas he hinged his Norman line on it and then misplayed it. As the Normans, you faced a narrower battlefield with little rear depth (his units fled the board quickly) and you successfully used your heavy cavalry as battering rams on the right while routing his insufficiently supported raw spearmen on the left. Though I think you benefitted from a lot of breaks and double-breaks that wrecked his forward troops before he could reinforce from his cluttered center. It would have been more interesting battle if his forward troops had not fought like 1940 Frenchmen. As the English, you outmaneuvered him on the right and center and outfought him on your left. I thought that you needlessly scattered your lights after initial successes -- you failed to hound his fragged units, failed to concentrate against heavier units, and weren't aggressive enough with your light spearman, who would appear to offer promising side/rear attack possibilities with their light spears. But the battle was largely decided. This only served to extend the battle. The second battle may have been as quick as the first if his superior troops did not have the morale of gods while his average troops had the morale of Spartans. He ate morale check after morale check whereas he was brittle as the English. And yet you still nearly mercy-ruled him. Again, thanks for these videos. I enjoy you sharing your thoughts as you go. Looking forward to seeing how you did in this tournament.

Thanks. Regarding the viability of the village as a stronghold, it really isn't that helpful against good heavy foot; lights probably would have evaded out of it, and even the massed missile troops would be gradually overcome by a single unit of heavy foot. If someone had truly good units like impact mediums, janissaries, or that sort of thing, it could have been a problem; or if the enemy had cavalry but no decent foot. As it was, it was annoying and something to take into account, but being only one tile of moderate disorder not enough to make a huge difference. Also, keep in mind that in this relatively early patch of the game knights were underpowered compared to how they are now.

This match would be a lot harder if it happened now thanks to the recent knight buff
