Vidja vidja vidja! Brandon Currin / Currin 1776 and Survival Steve are field testing a variety of traction devices today. Super handy to have if off- roading, traveling in snow ,or in a bug out situation where you may be using secondary roads. Also handy to have if you happen to live in Southeast Georgia where it’s rained 47 feet over the last month!
And yes, we let Steve drive.......

May sound nuts, and it does make a mess, but in a pinch, the front floor mats on many vehicles will help out. Especially in snow where all you need is some kind of traction. I put an industrial carpet piece in the back of an SUV to give a little more "finish" look. One day, that SUV was off the road and in a wet slush such that the highway tread tires could not climb back up. The carpet piece did just the trick. Best of all, it cost about $10 to replace with a brand new one when my wife decided the one we used was looking a bit ratty.

One time I got stuck on some ice, on a hill, and about 2 inches from my neighbors car. I put my floor mats under my tires and it worked. Not sure if it would work again but might be cheaper and easier to store than all of those pieces of plastic. I have a 04 Tacoma.

These would be great. I saw a guy use about 5-10 feet of cordage to tie the traction devices to the bumper. The objective is to continue driving until you get to safe spot all while dragging the traction devices along so you don't have to walk a long way to retrieve them.

One way of getting unstuck is the same way farmers can use to get farm equipment from out of the mud. Keep a small length of 2 by 4 in your car. Use a ratchet tie and ratchet the 2 by 4 to a tire. The 2 by 4 will give you the best friction to get unstuck. Just move forward very very slowly until you can get into a good area that will allow your tires a better grip. Might even be a good way of getting out of a ditch on the side of the road. Put on all of your driving tires and drive very slowly in a straight line. Kind of like putting tank tracks on your car when needed. That’s what really helps give regular tires more traction (the width of the tires). If you don’t have any 2 by 4 just use some rope and tie a branch to the tire. The survival expert Creek Stewart’s Grandfather Would do this to his farm tractors, stuck in the field. Tie anything like a 2 x 4 or branch to drive wheels. That’s why you really get your traction, the width of what connects to the ground.

Pro tip: chains also work on sand and mud, even rocks! unless you’re in Moab and there’s ONLY rock, in which case you probably don’t need the chains. But if you’re climbing a loose rutted out hill with some rocks in it those chains will still do you some good. Other than that tires and suspension are the best “traction devices” money can buy.
