I had a English setter named Rusty who knew how to undo carabiners. He was a genius. Such a good dog and hunter. RIP Rusty, you were 1 in a million

Excellent vid. Handsome dog, too. English setters are so rarely used as gun dogs here in England, where Labs and Spaniels dominate. It's a real shame. They are so elegant when they are working.

@@fkrr5 Hi Tom and best wishes from the UK. Since I made that post my son bought a Setter and she is a lovely girl but still a baby. We do mostly 'walk up' shooting for grouse and pheasant and my English Springer is unbeatable in that role. She is, though, almost 9 so is getting a bit tired on long shoots. Our new(ish) Setter is a bit hard-headed and doesn;t always come back to the whistle. This is my first time with the breed so is this a common trait?
@fkrr54 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan, Thank you. They're great dogs but being strong willed and weak on recall is pretty standard. You can train through the recall though. It's fun watching them creep and stalk birds. Hope everything is well in the UK. Enjoy your pup

I've owned and hunted both types of field bred english setters. The type you have is what is referred to as the Ryman type of setter and the the other the Llwellen. As long as they are from field hunting stock they are both great dogs. It depends on which type suits your hunting style. The close working or what I refer to as the foot hunting dog or the race horse style the field trialer's like. Since I'm a hunter I like the foot hunting or Ryman stock.

Nice video. I was hoping to see the process of field training. Our neighbor had the show English Setter. Love them. We have a golden now that's getting along in years and my wife and I are starting to consider other breeds. Her uncle has Irish Setters but I'm partial to the English. I'm going to look at the Luellen because they are smaller. It's getting harder to get dogs in the car if they're a heavier retriever. I'll keep looking for the training process.

Agreed. She doesn't have a clue about English Setters. Though I have high praise for the handler that managed to get that dog a prize III. I'll avoid Kentucky setters until after Bob Bailey, et al, passes from the scene. If you desire good and true info on English Setters, see Deane Harris or Kyle Warren.

i find the dog in this video too short haired, especially on the back and with a somehow head,face combo a bit out of proportions. As sir Laverack said, a heavy head is sign of sluggishness. Also the distribution of the black spots and the dominance of the black on the coat are unusual and i believe out of standard. Here we go why you shouldn't breed dogs or in general animals if you are far away from their area of origin. why? because you most probably start with just a few dogs amplifying this way only some traits while others would fade away in a few generations, because of the lack of genetic diversity. This said you have a beautiful and energetic dog.

This looks acts and styles. like a Llewellin. I have both. Similar but not the same. Some of the history mentioned is right. Not trying to be controversy good video, just know the differences in a pure one.
@alibentz86926 жыл бұрын
Tim Kelley thought llewellin setters were just a very specific line of English setters
@timkelley64346 жыл бұрын
Some consider that. The English may have spun off the Llewellin line. If you do research on Llewellins you can see that they are similar. They are mentioned in the English history. This Vidio does have some history. But the facts are reversed. Having both English and Llewellins. A couple examples are, Pure Llewellins are much like this one in the video, low tail point, curled between there legs around people. My English setters are the big running slimmer body structure. Tail straight up on point, wagging all over around people. I complete all over in field trials and several of my dogs are campaned by a Pro. nationally. Similar but uniquely different personality and style. It goes back and forth. No one wins in this debate, and the dogs are the ones that suffer and miss out on the opportunity to benefit the breed due to the different registration groups. FDSB, IPDBA, AKC. I could go on but this is not the platform for it. The video is good and we need more like it. However, some of the facts are inaccurate if you really research. The dog in the video is a good looking dog but it is a Llewellin. Its obvious to me for a number of reasons, but others may not see it. Just more misinformation .
@laurenbrunton55666 жыл бұрын
I think you may have your history confused. The modern English Setter was solidified as a breed in type by Edward Laverack in the early 1800’s. In the mid to late 1800’s Llewellin, using stock from Laverack’s breeding, developed his own line or type. They are all still English Setters, Llewellin is just a line of English Setters but the term has been misused in North America to refer to field English Setters as opposed to the bench or show Setters. “Llewellin” Setters are English Setters. While there is some divergence of type between field and show setters in Europe, the difference is not as great as it is in North America.
@marjoriestanek94746 жыл бұрын
I can assure you that this dog is ABSOLUTELY NOT a Llewellin. He is out of a Ryman-type bitch and the sire is a Bench bred English Setter.
