This tank is awesome! But the best part is seeing so many big fish look so happy and so calm. Than, you are right, mostly when you see Anthias in a big tank they look like they are fighting just to swim the currents are so strong,.....it's not a peaceful way to live! These Square Back Anthias look very chill and happy. They are one of my favorite anthias! Thank you for that lovely video. It's also very calming to hear you narrate! You have this amazing voice! Nathan's Reef Tank is amazing and brings ambition to our hobby community. New or Vet it’s always great to see who has what and how it works for them overall. I love when Nathan can show up in the Live Shows and when randomly Than talks about Nathan’s Reef tank. They are “Experts” in their own way. Because what may work for me may not work for Than or Nathan, what works for Nathan may not work for Than or myself, and what works for Than may not work for Nathan and myself. Simple basics are approached differently and that’s what makes our Reef tanks ours. Simply put! Great Job Than and Nathan. Loved it! Can’t wait for the next Nathans reef Update! Stay Reefing and High 5! Mel

Thanks! I have filter socks that I change out about once a week. I have a very large skimmer (AquaMaxx ConeS CO-6) and the auto water change of 7 gallons a day. And that is all I do now. My nitrates are usually between 8 to 20ppm and my phosphates are usually around 0.18 and that is the sweet spot for my tank.

Hands down aquacultured coral are far superior in every way, I'd say one in 5 or less of wild colonies turn out to be worthy of keeping. Moving something from the Wild to captivity and having it keep the same colours and growth under different conditions is asking a lot. Most long term reefers have one or two Wild colonies that are show stoppers. These are the future aquacultured frags. I'd love to get my hands on frags from this tank :)

The pvc pipe through both sumps could be just coated in silicone caulk like they use to connect the panels of a tank. If it's done when it's dry and it's completely coated, then it won't really need to be worried about.

That would be a awesome size . I wise i had the room to go with a longer tank . Looks so cool to have a huge viewing panel . Do you have a ton of chaeto in the fuge ? I have roughly have a 40 gallon fuge . I cant seem to raise nitrate though . I want it to be around 5 but even with heavy feeding i cant get any trace of nitrate.
@NathansReef
@NathansReef 5 жыл бұрын
I don't have any chaeto. I have in the past but it would die off when I added bio pellets (which i dont use anymore). I know for a fact that chaeto can out compete corals for nitrates if you have too much of it. So, if you have tons of chaeto that can certainly limit your nitrates.
@rickb7242

Hello! So besides the trick part shooting with the Orphek Atlantik, what is your detailed opinion on this light system? Thank you!

I can't speak for Than, but my experience with the Atlantik over the past few years has been great. I have a wide variety of corals (as seen in the video) under the light and they all do well, from favias, chalices, mushrooms to acros. I am even able to get great colors on the more demanding acros.

I'm glad Nathan chimed in because I don't have first hand experience with this particular fixture. I once demo'd an early stage unit 10 years ago, but I'm sure everything is different in these newer fixtures. I can say that Nathan has a "Homewrecker" Acropora in the frag tank that actually has nice colors. Every other one I've seen in person looks pretty bad (nothing like you see in pictures online), but his under the Orphek looks ok.

Great tank. No mention of the deep sand bed. Love to here Nathan's thoughts regarding. Would he repeat it on a larger tank?
@NathansReef
@NathansReef 5 жыл бұрын
Well, currently the deep sand bed is really only in a couple of corners on the left side of the tank and perhaps in the back. I started with more sand but removed some a few years ago because I increased the flow. So, on a new build I will certainly still have sand and would probably seek to have a few areas with deeper sand but the majority of the tank will only have an inch or two of sand.

I really like the video, its not just that he has this amazing tank but they way you film and talk, I dont know much about video making but you do know how to do it, I always wonder how do u get such images. I tried filming my tank once, it looks Blue... but completely Blue, I cant see anthing, and u get every pixel of color. Could you please tell me what do u use for recording. Also ... is There a posibility u know how much Nathan expends in eléctricity? I have a very small tank (120Lt) and it drains quite amount of energy.
@tidalgardens
@tidalgardens 5 жыл бұрын
It can be challenging to shoot fish tanks especially tanks lit by LEDs. Most camera sensors handle the blue light poorly but the newer ones are getting a little better. In the mean time some people use an orange filter which has its own problems, but at least it cuts out that blue look.
@NathansReef
@NathansReef 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Glad you like the tank! I don't have the exact figure for the cost of electricity alone. However, a few months ago I estimated the cost of the essentials (electricity, water, filters, salt, food) and I estimated it costs about $3,000 a year total to keep the tank running. While that is a big expense, I now am able to cover all of those costs by propagating and selling corals from the tanks!
@rogeliozunigachavez161
@rogeliozunigachavez161 5 жыл бұрын
@@NathansReef wow. It's amazing how you can maintain the tank with itself by selling corals. I ask about electricity bc in my case being such a small tank its the bigger never-ending expense so I'm putting solar panels to solve that issue, which I find it as very good inversion, anyways good luck with your tank. God knows how many hours I would spend just admiring it, as someone who is been in the great barrier I can say your tank seems like a piece you extracted for your own amusement, I hope one day I can have something like that.

Unfortunately, it takes quite an investment to get really good camera performance. I am shooting with a Canon C200 which is a professional cinema camera. Consumers often get caught up with certain camera specs like 4k resolution, but the real professional productions worry about completely different things, one of which is color science of the sensor. Consumer-grade cameras are getting better, but for right now it is very challenging and very expensive to get these results.

With automated systems, they should absolutely have upper and lower bounds as to what’s abnormal and if the sensor starts reading something that’s way too high or way too low then you know it’s either malfunctioning or your tank is going haywire. An alert at that point and then for it to just shut down might be better than dosing all the buffer solution and then corals and fish die

Yeah it's probably been 50 years since the average Coral in his aquarium has been in the ocean, I mean I want to see tractors sources source it be hard to tell past 50 years. But think it's the individual polyps age, those dying reproduce multiple times every year, and aging a coral five times the amount of time it takes for every single polip from the ocean to be dead and reproduce. that should be part of the normal aquamation process.

after moving to Hawaii and becoming dive master and doing over 100 tours and visiting other reefs like rajat ampat I will say my views on the hobby have changed. I do still want tp enjoy it but ill say I think every business should have a percent of its proceed go to the ocean some way. and I will say that we aren't giving our fish enough space to swim PERIOD!. too many dives ive had fish follow me around the area of a football field too many dives ive seen fish hop from reef slope to slope too many dives ive seen them swim and dart around inbetween picking the reef. never again will I crowd them again. corals on other hand they are crowed I get that and I see it. but the fish need to stretch their fins bro. swimming space is a very very I say again very under rated trait of fish live stock care and stress treatment. granted there are some fish that don't move more than 3 feet the whole dive but we have over the years made all our fish live this way and its wrong. one other thing !!! fish do not hang out in front of the reef like we force them to do in our over piled tanks they actually hangout just above it doing laps. as aquarists we need to take it in our own hands and give them their upper water column back. this is another guy who loves the hobby turned pro diver sharing some info .

I don’t have a tank and know almost none of the aquarium terminology being used... Idk what I’m doing with my life.

Great video! It's a shame there are so many adverts though...

That plumbing needs cleaned. Nothing compliments a tank like good plumbing and organization.

Ha! You should see behind the tank! When I have time I do try and wipe down the plumbing and wire management, but that time gets precious and scarce as my kids get older. I prioritize any time I get with the tank to ensure the health of the corals and fish.

Under the stand installations are also more challenging to keep clean and organized especially as equipment changes over the years. Setting up a new aquarium and having everything neatly tucked away is one thing, but having a tank over 10 years leads to equipment swap-outs and an ever growing snake pit of wires.
