Do you dig it up every 2 years and cut back the roots before popping it back in the he ground or just cut back the top growth?

I would say he planted it in a pot , not sure why he would dig it up otherwise.

I generally alternate pruning tow and bottom growth to be honest. In this case it just made for a nicer examples to do both.

I replanted it in the ground. It was not down ground-growing. More frequent digging and pruning gives smaller cut-marks and aids in nebari development.

And then you replant that??? Ive never heard iff field growingbut i havent heard if a lot of things bonsai so just makes me happier i have more options!! Can i ask what type of soil do you use? I just bought a bag if akadama for like 23$ and its maybe 7lbs of 3-6mm “hard akadama” but it breaks when I squeeze it (not sure if thats the way its supposed to be) but i was going to get lava rocks and mix 1/3 akadama lava rocks and regular soil for my pussywillow bonsai trees. Akadama seems to be expensive and other then maybe crushed hydroton idk what couple replace it im soil mixes, im concerned about all the little projects i have going on that it will take 300$ in akadama to play around. And thats if the vendor i bought from is on it seems to be even more expensive if you get the japanese imported brand.

yes, it is but you'll never get as vigorous growth as in the ground.
