the fieldmaster is the best pocket knife for woodscraft / bushcraft.it combines all the tool that are in common need for fieldcraft. the main blade is large and thin enough to make fine feathersticks for campfire building. the small blade is well suited for the small tasks a larger blade would be awkward to use. a saw blade for striking a farro rod and for making fine shaveings .. all in all it is the best pocket knife for a woodsman

Man, you are not kidding about people being spooky about knives these days. I was sitting in a camp chair at the park whittling with a Mora, and someone went to the Rangers and complained. Contrast that with the `50's and 60's when men would sit on the Courthouse steps and whittle a stick and chat, and no one thought twice. Living in the Era of the Snowflakes. . .

I have decided on the huntsman to get the corkscrew for knots the only time I needed the phillips head was for a door knob and it did not work. In my life I have needed knot tool more often than a phillips head And yes One of the two is the best all around for the woods I am 71 thanks for my favorite channel.

Way back in the 60's when we were teens/ kids, an cub, boy scouting, if I remember right these were considered top of the line, better than the boy scout pocket knives, or to put it mildly, the original MULTI TOOL, along with a straight blade of some sort, wish I still had that gear, thx Blackie

If i'm not mistaken the huntsman is exactly the same except it has a corkscrew instead of a philps driver so if the corkscrew/philips isnt important to you thats another option.

I've been carrying my Victorinox officer's suisse since 1988. In that time I have removed the large blade(after it broke ) and replaced it with a saw blade. I have also had to replace the tweezers and the pen a few times throughout the years. It has literally saved my life on one occasion and saved the life of my dog in an unrelated event. I also am a fan of the Fieldmaster and it is my pocket every day. Mine is a newer vintage and doesn’t have the pen, but seeing that yours had a needle I looked at mine. There was no needle included, but I noticed it had a hole for one in the same place yours was located. I added a needle and all is well. Thanks for the video as I now have another tool in my Fieldmaster.

I have another comment to add, even if the video is two years old. I carried a Huntsman for over twelve years of rough use. Somewhere along the way I chipped a chunk of the red scales off, but soldiered on until a clerk at an outdoors company saw the damage. He took my knife and a week later I returned to the store to pickup my old work horse, with brand new, shiny red scales courtesy of SAK, Victronix. No charge. Great knife and an even better company! Get yourself one soon!

For the people who prefer the huntsman for the corkscrew to untie knots. The parcel hook is just as effective for that purpose and then have a number2 phillips with the fieldmaster.
@gopherstate777
@gopherstate777 Жыл бұрын
For those people liking the Fieldmaster, I have never needed a Phillips screwdriver in the field? However, you can use the Huntsmen's corkscrew to store a waxed firestarter (specifically made for the SAK). And you can remove the toothpick and insert a mini Fero rod which works perfectly. And I am much more likely to need to start a fire in the woods should I get separated from my gear than use a Phillips or a parcel hook!
@grepora
@grepora 11 ай бұрын
I have both a Fieldmaster and an Huntsman. When closed the Phillips driver is more comfortable for tight grips than the corkscrew. However, a Tee handle Phillips driver is more difficult to use than an inline one. The can opener tip can be used to driver most common Phillips screws. So for me, the Huntsman has the slight edge, and is what I carry. The parcel hook is not as fine tipped as the corkscrew. So it cannot perform the same as the corkscrew. The parcel hook works best as Blackie Thomas described. The Ranger is like the Huntsman with the addition of a fine tooth saw and file. The Moutaneer is like the Huntsman, except the wood saw is replaced with the fine tooth saw. Both of these are typically >$10 more than the Huntsman on the secondary market.

@@gopherstate777 Idk about that. The idea of having fire-starting tools on a Victorinox seems insanely gimmicky to me. The odds of getting seperated from ALL your gear, being out of cellphone range, AND not knowing your way back to your vehicle all at once are INSANELY low. Like, if we're worried about such low-chance situations then getting struck by lightning should be a major concern. No, I'd say the actual primary two uses for the corkscrew are opening wine bottles on-the-go, and undoing knots. Also, speaking of knots, a little hint I'll offer is that the hook can actually be pretty nice for pulling knots tighter, or adjusting laces on boots. As for the toothpick... It actually makes for a pretty good tool to clean out your knife on-the-go.

I prefer the huntsman too, the corkscrew is more valuable to me than the screwdriver even in the field. It helps with making a hole in pithy wood. Besides a bottle of wine is great on a canoe trip, never needed a screw driver and if I do, I have a leatherman for such.

I carry a similar model missing a few of the doo-dads but it's a home toolbox that gets used often. You are so right about the saw blade used as a sparker for the ferrocerium fire starters. I probably use the knife blades the least but they're easy to keep sharp and are ready when needed. I've found the Swiss Army knives to be an excellent investment.

Great knife! Though for outdoors I tend to like the corkscrew vs the philips (huntsman). I don’t use it to open wine bottles but it’s really handy as a fid to undo knots or splice rope. Plus Victorinox sells a little tiny screwdriver that screws into the corkscrew that is good for eyeglasses. Regarding the pin, I notice all the knives I’ve bought in recent years have the small hole for a pin or needle.

Nice video, I always carry my Victorinox Swiss Tool X Plus Ratchet multitool every time I leave the house, and I'm going to buy a Victorinox Huntsman pocket knife to go with it. For over 23 years I carried a 1968 U.S. Camillus Military Pocket knife and I finally wore the springs out on it. So I bought a $20 Magnum by Boker Camp Knife ( it has the same tools as my U.S. Camillus had ) and have been using it for over 3 years now. It's held up great, has done everything I needed it to do, and I'm happy with it. But I've been watching Felix Immler's YT videos and it is AMAZING what that guy can do with a Victorinox Huntsman. I'm so impressed at his work that it's convinced me to buy a Huntsman too.

👍 Very good choice. Thank you for sharing. My EDC in town is the Victorinox Spartan simply due it’s slim size. Outside of town (fishing/camping/hunting, etc.) my EDC pocket knife is the Victorinox Huntsman. Same as your Fieldmaster except the Phillips screwdriver is replaced by a corkscrew. The tip of the can opener has served me well on small Phillips head screws (if I was frequently around machinery the purpose build Phillips screwdriver would probably be a better choice). The corkscrew allows me to carry an eye glass screwdriver and a small piece of tinder. I placed a 90 degree edge on the side of my bottle opener to use as a ferro rod scrapper as it allows me to apply pressure in the non-folding direction. On both my Spartan and Huntsman I have the same style scales you have, but mine are yellow. Phillips screwdriver or corkscrew these are excellent multi-purpose pocket tools.

I owned an old bar/restaurant up until the coronavirus hit. People were always bringing weird stuff in there to sell. A woman came in that had several boxes of stuff that had been salvaged from a closed hardware store. I bought one of the boxes that had a lot of old but " new" knives in it. Still in their old boxes. after I got it home and went through it, it had about a half dozen old/new Victornox Swiss army knives. Most were the smaller ones, but one was one of the largest that they made and that had been discontinued. I put them all on Ebay. I forget the model and how much I got for it, but apparently the large one was a real collectible. Especially still in the old box. I think I got about $250 from the auction for it alone.

Hey Blackie I like your review of the Victorinox Field master. I've never heard of it. I have carried the Victorinox Swiss Champ for about 37 38 years. I have went through 3 of them. I abliterated the first one. It fell apart and even broke a blade. I contacted Victorinox and they sent me a new one. Several years later the handle broke off. I tried returning it and they sent it back to me with a 30% off coupon on a new one. Anyway. I love their knives. I don't like the Philips screwdriver on the T Handle setup. On the Swiss Champ it's on the end like a normal screwdriver. I have used it so much. Good tip on tooth pick knot removal. You can use the corkscrew to open knots as well. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your videos.

I think many folks overlook a the Swiss Army knives (SAK) and go for the fixed blades. Way back in the 1980s in the US Army we used our red handled Victorinox knives all the time in garrison and in the field. It took me a while to figure out what that tiny hole behind the Huntsman corkscrew was for - Victorinox doesn't provide a straight pin with that model. I've added a small ferro rod (strip?) in place of the toothpick and a bit of firestarting material that threads onto the corkscrew. Surprisingly, they all work very well together. A nice extra if you lose your other firestarting possibles. Some folks even pull the scales off and store a few small hooks and a bit of line in the gaps, just in case.

Victorinox makes some of the best pocket knives / tools. I agree with you 100% that the Fieldmaster is the best one.

I just last year went with the Huntsman for the corkscrew. Knots and can screw it to a branch to use opposing saw for out of reach this/that. lol, eep! I've not had a straight pin around since early seventies. (-: I'll have to get me one.

When I don't want my Huntsman in my pocket(scratches from keys, etc.) I belt mine using the unused pouch that came with my Craftsman folding/lock blade razor knife I chucked in the console. It tucks in just fine in that pouch.

Another thing about having a pocket knife with bright scales, such as red or blue, is that it’s more visible if you misplace it around camp somewhere.

I used my straight pin once with a piece of my glow in the dark 550 cord lanyard to make a fishing lure. (Fly ) which I actually caught dinner with,,

Use the Victorinox Warranty. Fill out a form.. Pay shipping & handling. Wait next to the mail box. They have one of the best no-bull crap to deal with warranties in the knife industry. Just like ESEE knives. Great knife !

The next higher version of the Fieldmaster was called the Master Craftsman. It added the metal saw/file to the Fieldmaster. After 1986 when NASA chose it for astronauts, Victorinox renamed this knife as the "Astronaut." Some people called it the Shuttle model because of the inlaid image of the Space Shuttle. At some point after NASA succeeded in turning the Shuttle program into a debacle, Victorinox discontinued the model. The Japanese knock-off must not have received the memo ...

For a replacement a huntsman might do well. Same set up for all the functions except it's a corkscrew vs a Philips. Blade placement may vary too but I believe it is identical except for the corkscrew
