Paul Childerley has the stag stalking outing of his life - a dream come true. He is going up the hill in the Highlands of Scotland in the most traditional manner possible. It’s the red rut and the stags are holding hinds in this part of Inverness-shire. Tweeds, two-draw scopes and a garron pony are the order of the day, as well as some of the most spectacular optics available from Zeiss: the new SFL binoculars and the re-engineered V8 scope. It’s a truly magical experience.

Why shoot deer?
There are more than two million red, roe, fallow, sika, muntjac and Chinese water deer in Britain’s countryside and semi-urban areas, the highest level for 1,000 years. Numbers have doubled since 1999, according to the Deer Initiative, the UK government’s deer agency.
Deer are an attractive and an important part of our wildlife. However, they have no natural predator in the UK so numbers must be sensibly and strategically managed to keep them in balance with their habitat and to prevent damage to crops, trees, woodland flora, gardens and other wildlife.
Deer cause £4.5 million-worth (Forestry Commission Scotland) of damage to plantations and other commercial woodlands in Scotland. Crop damage is estimated at £4.3m a year according to DEFRA, with the greatest damage on cereal crops in east and south-west England.
More than 8,000 hectares (Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology) of woodland with SSI status is currently in ‘unfavourable’ or ‘recovering’ condition due to deer impacts such as browsing and fraying. Deer can also influence the variety of wildlife in woodlands and other habitats by altering structural and plant species diversity. According to the University of East Anglia’s Dr Paul Dolman, that has resulted in a 50% decline in woodland bird numbers where deer are present, impacting particularly on nightingales, blackcaps, chiffchaffs and warblers.
Deer are susceptible to Bovine TB and may be responsible for the transmission of TB to cattle. They are also the likely driver behind the UK’s increasing tick population (Scharlemann et al 2008).
Happily, venison is a delicious meat. It is wild, natural and free range, and - almost fat-free - it is one of the healthiest meats available today. Results from research commissioned by the Game-to-Eat campaign (Leatherhead Food International Research 2006) suggest that there are real health benefits to eating game. Venison is high in protein, low in saturated fatty acids and contains higher levels of iron than any other red meat.
We’re proud to promote enjoyment of fieldsports and the countryside. There are three guiding principles to everything we do on Fieldsports Channel:
▶ Shoot responsibly
▶ Respect the quarry
▶ Ensure a humane, clean and quick kill

Fantastic video guys. Great filming and really gets you to the heart and soul of hill stalking. Epic landscape and it makes you wonder just how many city gents would struggle carrying a rifle and pack for a 15 mile treck in the hills lol. You’ve got to be fit for that country. What a dream job to have. Can’t beat a horse for that terrain. That was a fabulous stag, well done. A day to remember over a wee dram👍

Hi, this is the first time I have seen anything like this before(from Scotland) and it was a great experience to watch this video. Beautiful country and an amazing experience to even be able to watch this on the net(KZbin). To think that this has been going on the basically the same way for over a 100 years is really something. Love the tradition. Thanks for the video, and the experience, fantastic. Regards from Australia.

Love garrons, they are brilliant in dressage competitions, too. I've tried to convince my wife to let me buy one and keep him inthe garden in Sussex for environmentally friendly deer extraction. Apparently, not. Always good to see Paul on Fieldsports Channel. From memory the classic 2 draw scope was a Gray's. We have 1 at home that I was allowed to play with as a child, as were my kids. Now, apart from a dust and polish, no one gets to touch it. Final comment: hill stalkers walk up to 70 miles per week on the hill (according to the steps on a late family friend's phone). So, 3,500 miles per year, Kind of puts my pathetic attempts Down Souh, to keep my steps up, in perspective. And just brilliant to see everyone in tweed.

Thanks, Colin. I thought you'd like the tweed. You might be interested to know that, ten years' ago, Zeiss had an internal discussion about buying Gray's 🙂 / Charlie

@@fieldsportstv Am I that predictable, Charlie? Shame on me! I got my first dog and my first pony, (undersized grey garron) on the same day, Of the 3 of us, only the garron turned out well. The other 2 were wild as hawks. I only wear tweeds when shooting back in Scotland now and wear "technical tweed" down South. I might just get my hairy old breeks out this season: because I can! I should have added, that was a beautifully filmed and produced piece. Thank you. PS Are Gray's still going? Just wonderful pieces of kit, though technology passed draw scopes by.

Funny commenting about the Sako S20 and reducing weight. It's one of the most Obese overweight modern day rifles on the market. I can't believe anyone would buy one. Especially considering there are much much lighter and better options out there for mountain hunting such as the Fierce, Hardy and Christensen Arms.
