Hello Garden

Күн бұрын

Today felt like a gift! I’m finally planting in the cut flower garden and getting my heirloom chrysanthemum collection in the ground along with a plethora of snapdragons. I didn’t get as far as I had hoped with my compost application, but there is always tomorrow!
Thanks for playing in the garden with me!

I laughed when you said you got compost down your shirt. I do that all the time. I love how real you are! 🤣❤️

Hello Kate, I too had come to the conclusion that buying bags of compost wasn't economical. So i went and bought a trailer load recently. ( first time) How excited I got laying it on my garden bed. Ohhh all that goodness feeding my plants and my micro organisms in the ground. Great show Kate, look forward to the next. Keep rollin xx

Thanks so much! I have lots of steps between my truck and the back garden, so I've been putting off getting that glorious load of compost. Ha! So glad I finally did!

Hey there Kate! I so needed to hear this today. " Gardening is a journey ". Good advice! I have had so many garden woes, and it's good to hear I am not alone. We are in a heatwave here in Alabama, so it makes being in the garden a challenge right now.

That is a hard way to add compost, by the bucket. Your plants will appreciate your labor, you go girl! 🤗

Oof. You’re telling me! I had to hike it up the back stairs and then over. I have a small ramp, but it doesn’t fit the staircase down to the alley. I was tuckered!

Cheering you on in the bunny battle. I’ve been using Liquid Fence for a couple years now in my Gig Harbor, WA garden. It works well!! Better for deer than rabbits but it’s been the best line of defense against critters so far!👍🏼

I've read that keeping the bindweed cut at soil level will starve out the weed where pulling it makes it sprout back. I was also thinking if you used cardboard then top with compost like Janey did it would also help to smother the weed? Maybe it would be worth a try? Nothing like a nice load of fresh compost!

I'm glad to see that I am not the only one who is late planting. I was sick in May and we had cold winds the first part of June so I got behind. My poor plants and veggies were languishing in the pots. Finally am getting them in the garden this week!:

Hi Kate, LOVE your cut flower beds. I wish I had the space. But alas I use my spaces differently and have cut flowers in my beds. Have gotten bulk mulch for years. Last year ordered and had delivered 7 yards of fine mulch. Dumped on the street by the parking curb. Thankfully I had hired two guys and my friend came and we moved about 5 1/2 yards almost 2 to 4 inches deep in some places in 4 hours. The rest, two of my good neighbors used and I piled some up as fill in. Makes weeding so much easier. And the garden beds look like they have their make up on.

Oh man... I LOVE mulch so much. It makes everything look so beautiful! I feel like my front beds are ready for a new application. And you are right... weeding is 10x easier!

I had 3 yards of good soil delivered to fill up my raised beds it was more economical even had enough leftover to give to neighbors for their raised beds that made them happy

@@doreen9838 Isn't it amazing? The dirt exchange delivery prices are pretty good. They even have services where they can deliver a box for you to fill with green waste! It's such a good investment.

You must be psychic. While working in my yard today I was planning to comment and ask for a bulk source of soils. This is a great resource. Thank you Your mum's are looking pretty good. Will they bloom this Fall and then require new starts to generate new plants for next year?

Very impressive dirt yard! I wish I had a pickup truck. Cutting garden looks great, going to look for some heirloom mums to add to my garden for fall interest. Looking forward to see how they turn out.

Hi Kate. I'm in Gig Harbor. Can you recommend a substitute for DG that everyone in CA get to use? I love the look of Janey's path from Dig, Plant, Water Repeat. I don't know what is appropriate for us here in the PNW.

Good morning Kate, I wondered when it is too late to plant out chrysanthemums? Are there revlooming varieties? Are they a cut and come again flower? As I watched this, I thought “I don’t have any rabbits” and as I thought that, I saw a bunny hop by my sliding glass door in my courtyard. LOL I hadn’t seen one in 5 years.
@HelloGarden
@HelloGarden 3 ай бұрын
Oh no! You tell that bunny to scram! As for chrysanthemums, I'm really learning right along with you! These heirloom mums are brand new to me so I'm in uncharted waters. And if they're anything like their more available varieties, they love to be cut back. We shall see!

Ooh, do let us know how liquid fence works out. We also have very happy bunnies and I'd like them to be happy outside my garden, LOL. I have a truck on my wish list for next year so we can get bulk compost and mulch. I can't wait to see your glorious cut flower garden all in bloom.

Great question! I'll probably add this to the next "Tea Time with Kate" video. I water for 20 minutes at 6am about 3 days per week. When temps climb into the upper 80's, I increase it based on how the soil responds, but always tackle it in the morning.

Hi Kate, I also love watching the machines load the bulk compost/mulch. What does the fish compost have?
@HelloGarden
@HelloGarden 3 ай бұрын
Isn't it so satisfying?!? And the fish compost is organic waste, blended hardwoods and Washington native fish. It is super high in nitrogen and I mix it into my traditional compost. I'm not sure exactly why it's so awesome, but it is. The other neat thing is that the Dirt Exchange will even sell it in 5 gallon bucket loads if you're picking it up in a car.
@KenIvywood

Good morning! The dirt exchange is the place to go especially with the lower price.Then we have more money to spend on plants. Would cardboard kill out the bind weeds? You are going to have an amazing garden.
@HelloGarden
@HelloGarden 3 ай бұрын
Oooooo... garden math. I love it! Ha ha ha! And the bind weed is the WORST. It will creep along under the cardboard until it finds the edge and then pop up again. The garden fork is the best way for me to remove it because it leaves most of the roots intact.

Good morning Kate, I use Liquid Fence to keep the deer from the garden. It works pretty good for me. Only thing it does leave a slight white residue on the plant. That’s ok with me, better that than no plant at all! Looking forward to see the mums! 🪴👒🪴

I was noticing the white residue when spraying, but I'm like you. If it keeps the bunnies away, I'm going to just be okay with it!
