Mark from 'Moz Customs' in Geraldton shows us how to repair a cracked nose on a epoxy sandwich windsurf board. Apologies for the abrupt ending to the video I wasn't able to film the board getting painted on the final day. Mark did a quick video on his phone to show the finished product.
We made a follow up video on painting here - • Spray Painting Repair ...

Cheers,
Paul

Incredibly helpful. Windsurf board repair has been so much of a mystery. This has given me the confidence to have a go at my first nose job (same board would you believe it). As someone said below, this video is gold... Amazing job guys.

On the Seabreeze blog website I have always liked the comments that a "Mark" made on damage to the noses of foilboards from over the handlebar crashes and the problems with nose pads. I now can put a face to the name and see how knowledgeable he is. Thanks so much Mark!!

Also thanks to @@windsurfer for putting this video up. Like James below, I am going to take a crack at fixing a botched job. This is for a foil board with cracks right through a nose pad, as Mark has done several times.

I have to agree with Den. The most difficult part, having a nice spraypaint, is missing and Mark actually nailed this. Also Mark took more time and work to have a nice finish instead of having a better repairment of broken structure. Or even showing how a nose can be build back stronger. Which makes a lot of sense since the nose has objectivly shown it is build too weakly. I guess it soon will be broken again. But of course, a repair is allways better than duct tape or nothing.

I feel like when I do this work, when I get to the sanding, my sanding bites into the glass long before I get a smooth fair surface. I don’t think I make a large enough low area before putting the fibreglass on. So useful to see someone else do it.

Excellent explanation/lecture...As we want u all to live as long as possible..We have some recommendations... 1- Always use vaccum cleaner to get rid of the poisonous dust..Either during the operations of just after...the jobs. Remember u worn mask later..But there was already dust by the time u fisrts sanded..(remember about the dog also his nose is nearer the ground); 2- Promise u get rid of the contamined materials (leftovers of chemicals, mixing bowls, masking tapes.etc..etc..etc..) In the possible environmentally safest manner. 3- You mask has exaling valves....Be careful maybe u inhaling fine dust..But I´m not sure....I know for covid-19 they are not recommended..

Thanks for the video, although I'm not so impressed with the quality of the repair job. Glassfibre is rather coarse (low density), cut inaccurate and positioned even less accurate. The compressed foam under the crack was not repaired at all. Basically he just tied both sides of the crack together with a very thin piece of glass, sanded away to even less, and covered it all up with filler. You can get away with that in a nose job because it is not really loaded with forces or deformation, but I do not consider this a professional repair. It certainly would not do on a rail in the middle or anywhere near the foodpads. Really liked the tip of the falling temp (or taking out the vent screw). Easy thing to overlook.

Hey mate, don't over think it. As Mark pointed out, this is something an average punter can hook into. A basic fix, seal and get back on the water... after all it's windy season in WA!

Ron I think you missed some. Obviously a professional repairer diagnoses it first - He says the nose only had the paint fall off and that carbon was no damaged so he's replaced paint with glass, there is no crushed foam. Obviously underneath the glass it still solid so he has replaced glass. He also says *don't sand away any glass* so I guess he doesn't. "covered all up with filler" sound like your saying he did a crap job and hid it - almost all the filler is sanded off which shows a GOOD job glass job cos it didn't take much. I agree with other comments - it showing a job anyone can do not all divinycell replacement etc maybe they could do one like that if they wanted

So I checked with Mark & this was his response; “The RRD nose repair was mixed by me - it’s not a code. It’s 2 pack and that I didn’t cover it, as it’s too poisonous and technical. They are better to use a quality orange from auto paint store and paint the whole thing instead of trying to match.”

Thanks for the video guys!! It gave me the courage the fix my board. But I couldn't make out what the filler you used was. Was it "Q Cell"? I can't find that here and ended up using fiberglass filler which is really hard to get a good finish because of the thick strands. I think my fix is strong, but it doesn't look as good as yours. ;-)

Great vid. Why do windsurf Boards and paddle boards cost so much yet they are sealed in cheap paint and auto clear coat? At least a real surfboard is resin and tint, nothing more. Biggest scam out there. Pay bigger, and you get garbage like fillers and paint.

Making a windsurf board I’d say costs quite a lot more to make than a surfboard. There’s a lot more man hours in it.

if you hit the nose and the bottom is cracked, there is 100% dameged the inside structure of the sandwich. if you dont fix that , the nose is nowhere near the strenght it was before the crash and it was obviously shitty already from the factory. this is not the repaire, this is just hiding the damage. that repair and glass job is as poor as it can be.
