I was privileged to witness the Russian team in 1966, they along with Brazil & Portugal played a mini tournament against the hosts, the Scots national team, myself and a great old pal, Lindsey Kennard attended all the games, we were both just turned 16. We saw Pele, Eusebio & I believe Lev Yachin, amongst a plethora of great players, quite a few of them being Scots, Ronnie McKinnon, the most urbane & talented centre half, wee Billy Bremner & a host of others, Ronnie Simpson in goals, of course, Big Tommy Gemmel. Wonderful memories, we spent a lot of The Brazil game talking with the famous Brazilian trainers, we were stood right beside the Brazilian dugout. They were famous characters, and forgive me I cannot remember their names.

11 out of 22 players on the USSR team in 1966 were from Russia. Interestingly, the same was true in 1970 -- 11 out of 22 players were from Russia. After that, the USSR team was predominantly non-Russian. For example, at the next World Cup that USSR qualified for, 1982, only two players in the starting eleven were from Russia: Dasayev and Gavrilov.

I mean Yugoslavia were banned from the 1992 World Cup because their country was war torn and falling apart. Although the current situation with Russia is very different it’s still a country waging war on another and it’s the invader. Russia probably wouldn’t of qualified anyway.
