HQ Audio Of Review: podcastage.com/rev/k669d
Today I review a budget dynamic mic which costs only $37, the Fifine K669d. This is a very basic microphone with no switches or buttons, and a single XLR port on the rear. It offers a very bright sound which can come across a bit too boosted and a bit sibilant. It doesn't do a great job with shock rejection, plosive rejection, or keyboard rejection, but for the price it's acceptable.

I love this mic. Can’t say it enough. I reviewed this a while back, similar opinion. if you are not a fan of handheld mics, This is pound for pound the best Budget mic (studio/broadcast style ) out there when you factor in price, build quality, and audio. Performance. Just love it. A tad sensitive, but there is always some give and take when prices so low.

Another great video. It's also a very balanced review, noting price Vs quality, no hype, but also not slamming for not equalling a $400 mic. We learn it's punching above its price, choice depends on preferences, and what you'd pick. 😎👍🧙

I appreciate that. I try to keep the price in perspective while still pointing out the short comings. A few times, I've had to outright say no, and I can get a bit harsh, but for the most part it'd be like arguing over what color blue you want to use to paint with. Great review as always. Seems like a good mic if very low cost and looks are higher on your list than good sound quality. On acoustic guitar it sounds more like a lousy condenser than a dynamics mic so the high end on it is indeed "impressive" at least in terms of quantity.

Hey pal. I've been watching your videos for months, and love the content. Just wondering, as a man with a deep voice, would you recommend the Rode Procaster to me for spoken word? Are there any mics you would suggest instead?
@Podcastage
@Podcastage 11 ай бұрын
I want to preface this by saying that it's going to come down to your personal preference because I have heard people with low voices sound great on pretty much every mic. I'd suggest checking Booth Junkies video on the Rode Procaster to determine if it's a sound you enjoy. I think it would be more than sufficient for that. I know people with deep voices also love the RE320 (very bright) or the RE20 (less boosted top end) . I have heard deep voices sound great on the SM7b, M160, and Ku5a as well, which are a bit darker. So there's no exact answer for you about other mics. The Procaster would likely be fine for that. Here's Mike's video demoing the Procaster: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXm9gauonNt1aZY

For this price this microphone is really good! My biggest problem however is that it picks up way too many sounds from knocks from the table, and mix stand. Other mics like the sm58/57 are probably a lot more tolerant in that regard. I think this isn’t very practical considering it’s aimed at people getting started with podcasts or as a gaming mic where you’re gonna get a lot of keyboard sounds or knocks on the table. The mids also sound a little scooped

For $37 good job, to be picky it sounds way too boosted in the highs. I would personally take the XM8500 and eq it a bit but some people will want a microphone with the 'broadcast look' rather than a shock mounted handheld, purely for the visuals. Am expecting a Behringer BR7b before much longer.

For it's sound a price it is not a bad option... I thins the sibilance and the extra high end could be tamed by a foam windscreen. which would sort plosives also and then maybe a shock mount for stand arm rejection... should have included both of those things instead of everything else... like they have done with most of their other microphones. It's clear this was the one to have the sound that is working for them but without the USB interface, but failed to included the two important things that helped the other microphones they sell. For the price and a couple added parts, it then costs the same as the other ones but without a USB interface.... sooo. But personally do not like the USB interfaces, I brought a couple and they are not very stable. Wanted them so I could use both the XLR and the USB interface, XLR for the stream and the USB interface for calls, but found I was getting random audio drop outs when using the USB interface on both. Now I have a shock mount laying around that would fit this so might be worth it as i only need to find a foam windscreen to fit it and it might be quite fine.

Sorry to hear that usb audio interfaces were too unstable for you, but it's good to know that there was an option that provides the stability that you need. I agree that a foam windscreen and a shock mount would help this. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and the comment.

I like your videos and the way you do reviews and comparisons, the only criticism I can make of the tests is the interface you use, the Focusrite Scarlett has very poor quality preamps, a Steinberg is much better or the Focusrite Clarett, Tascam 102 also has better preamps than Focusrite's Scarlett series, that way the mic test would be better and the differences in the comparisons would be more noticeable.
@Podcastage
@Podcastage 11 ай бұрын
I chose the Scarlett for a very specific reason, it's the best selling audio interface. That means that when I'm providing a comparison through that device, I am giving a demonstration that will be reflective of the sound the largest number of people will be getting. I also think there may be some overstating of how good or bad the preamps are. I'd recommend watching the first 3:45 of this video where I demo something related to this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3_IooR5bs6sf5Y

@@Podcastage I fully understand the reason for your choices, and I believe that the recording consists of the "target". If you are going to do podscat, a tremendous upgrade is not necessary as you describe it in a very good way in the link you sent about audio interfaces. What I'm saying is that a better preamp will subtly enhance the changes in the microphone pickup, I'll give you a very specific example, Scarlett vs Mbox pro 3 gen, if you notice the difference in the preamps and the price range is not very different despite being interfaces of very different generations, I still use the Mbox pro despite its age. But if we are talking about recordings of orchestral acoustic instruments in dedicated rooms, a good range configuration will necessarily be needed to capture all the subtleties generated by acoustic instruments and all the equipment is making its contribution to the final result, I agree with you that for Podscat and "home" recording, an Apogee or a UAudio is not necessary, if it is obtained it would possibly enter the realm of luxury and the improvement would be, as you say, subtle, audio is a tremendously speculative market and it is a bag on deaf ears that will never fill up.

I realized that fifine likes to make their dynamic mics very bright sounding, as far as the ones I've heard at least. I'm guessing it's to balance out the low end and the higher frequency. But whatever their intentions are, it's for sure making the mics sound too bright and sibilant. Nonetheless, a lot of newbies wouldn't be able to tell a difference I guess.
@Podcastage

Yeah. A lot of people won't notice or care about the differences in sound. This seems to be geared towards people just getting started and would likely be one of their first mics. This mic seems to have a very narrow sweet spot. When you first began the review, my immediate reaction was "ew." It sounds very high-heavy and hollow. However, when you start doing the mic comparison, the distance to mic seems to be closed some and improves the tonal quality so it is more balanced. 3" off seems to be the ticket. But boy, don't deviate from 3"! Even then, it is a bit sibilant to my ears. And don't hate me, but is it just me, or did the sE DCM3 referenced in the comparison go AWOL?

What mic is the best for background sound rejection
@Podcastage
@Podcastage 11 ай бұрын
There is no "best" because it's going to depend on the location of the sound source. A cardioid does good at rejecting from the rear, but what if the sound is coming from the sides? Then you would want a figure 8 microphone and not a cardioid. What if you have a sound source at 125-degrees from the front of the mic? Then a super-cardioid would be the best, but it would be worse than a cardioid at 180-degrees. So I struggle to say there is a "best" for background sound rejection. There may be maximum 180-degree rejection, but I have not done any rankings on this. Perhaps that's something I should look into.

It has a scooped response which is bound to get it some fans but is a little impractical. It also has a wide cardioid pattern which is rather rare and something I like a lot. Depending on where the owner lives, it would make a good earthquake detector between sessions. It does not suck, though, which makes me wonder “how are these things sold for $37?🤯” I can’t figure any way to launder money by selling microphones.
