The Sonic Boom of the South made the Aristocrat band look like a high school band. JSU ate through this stand performance like a hot comb threw a lace front wig! After reading several posts on here, it becomes very obvious that there are some that have an ear for music and understand the fundamentals of quality sound and some that don't. Nothing wrong with that. Having said that, I think both bands bring a different style and both have their strengths and opportunities.

Both bands did really good. JSU was the attention grabber. TSU was cleaner of course, but we knew that before the game started because they always are but I personally like fresh battles not majority of whats been heard years prior on numerous occasions. I'm all for sounding good but aggressive arrangements won me on this one.

Some people immediately dismiss a band because they are powerful....JSU is Powerful and Musical, not most bands can't capture that concept at the same time....TnSU is a good band, but I think they let the BOOM take them out of their character...BOOM takes the Win...

JSU won hands down. Some of the songs TSU played sounded like they were sight reading. You can't possibly say TSU sounded better and be judging fairly. Don't get me wrong I am a huge fan of TSU the aristocrats use to be my favorite but they have reached a plateau they can't seem to break through. They need a shot of B 12 or something. The songs were shaky in the stands and that's usually TSU ' S stomping grounds, but they got man handled. JSU was not only powerful and clean but confident as well. My only gripe with JSU was Dark Horse a little but more dynamics in there. And > wanted to hear all of man eater ugh! As far as the squads Jsetts were on point the Sophisticated Ladies need to be replaced with the a color gaurd. I will give them credit for stepping it up for this game but consistency is everything. They were honestly better off with their old style of dance. It set them apart now they just look like everyone else.

I love TSU's groove and identity. But if you want to hear a kind and cuddly JSU, I would refer you to our other ensembles (Symphonic Band, Concert band, Jazz band 1 and 2, JSU Orchestra, Brass Quintet, and woodwind ensemble) As far as the Boom is concerned, We come out the gate 100mph ball's to the wall... Miss me with the, they to loud comments. It's rough in the S.W.A.C... not to be confused with the weak MEAC conference 🤦🏾‍♂️

The Liberty Bowl (the stadium where that game is being held) has a weird set up. Depending on which side they have the bands seated it will always pose a challenge. That's not our usual set up. But in that cramped stadium the band has to spread outward instead of upwards.

I have to say I love my former trumpet section of being in the sonic boom but my section is not projecting as well as they should be it seem like they are straining according to clips but its just the third game hopefully they will get better...and shout to the lower bass great job boom

The only section that stood out for JSU was the btones. TF sounding extremely thin this year. I guess I'm used to hearing randoms Gs here and there from them. It's funny how TnSU sound carries across the field and they aren't playing triple fortissimo and all that horn flaring. Posture equals projection... Still don't get how horn flaring means you are "blowing".

Since The 100 is so far from elite band status these years, the best they can do is to try and protect whatever staples they do have (e.g., Good Times; Flight of the Bumblebee, maybe; S.O.S.; and 20th Century Theme) from other bands. They can only do that by playing them well, and they haven't for three years now. Bands wanting to steal those signatures makes perfect sense to me.

JSU seemed to be pre-occupied or had their minds somewhere else this year. I attend the Classic every year. JSU trombones and melos were even off during the section challenges in the stands this year. Not sure if the football team getting waxed had something to do with it or not. Their drum majors are the best in the land, hands down. Slight edge to TSU this year...looking forward to next year already.

dandewaynejackson Not at all sir. Have had the pleasure of living in six different states and always check out the HBCU bands. It taught me to be objective and not always subjective. Credit is always given when it's due..from Delaware State passing VCU down to hit BCC and FAMU in Florida...opinions will always vary and I can agree to disagree. Thanks for the reply though!

I'm sorry but this wasn't the AoB I was expecting to see. I thought they were going to come in groove the hello out of the 5Q. I've seen that in recent years from them and a couple MEAC schools, but this time around, it just wasn't there. And they can talk all that BS they want about the BOOM just bringing power, but the BOOM was able to bring everything they did and more. TSU was about 3 or 4 songs in before they played something I was really feeling. Maybe Nobody was the best thing they played. And lets not act TSU didn't try to play with power. They tried to crank up several times. There was just a difference between them and the BOOM. They sounded like the BOOM when it was smaller. Honestly the AoB and the BOOM sounded about the same when they were playing at normal volume. If you want to make the argument that the BOOM played too many arrangements with a power component, I can somewhat feel that argument. But to say they showed no versatility is BS. My only problem with the BOOM is I think they could have possibly played another "groove" song or two, and the trumpet sound needs to dominate more in arrangements.

I don't think there's a "winner" here the styles aren't really comparable one is a loud band the other is a clean balanced groovy band. The AOB isn't trying to be louder than the Boom that's not they style if you want that go watch Talladega or Southern. BOTH BANDS SOUNDED GOOD. And just leave it at that Jackson was no doubt louder but TSU was infact cleaner, better balanced, and played with better musicianship.

Only knock to JSU is the trumpets. Trumpets don't seem as strong. Also that ONE screamer with the gloves on holding out not playing his music only trying to scream two notes a song is not cool. He not even heard half the time, so why hold out while everybody else playing to scream something that's not heard anyways? Only area y'all will have trouble during BoomBox is the trumpets
