I love figs and have a beautifu large tree in our back yard. Each year I make fig and pear paste, glacè figs, fig jam and fig dessert. A fig is a beautiful thing ❤

I'm not sure. If you have them in pots, you can bring them indoors when its cold.

So glad I found this channel and I’ve been binge watching your videos! I’m here in Manvel and have been gardening for two years with lots of trial and error. It’s nice to learn from a seasoned gardener from this area. Where did you buy your figs from? I’ve only seen Celeste and Brown Turkey so far. I might get the Celeste to try out but would love to eventually have more varieties.

They do well, just have one large enough for the size of root system you plan to maintain.

Hi Scott, I've been binge watching your videos over the past week or two. I am in New Braunfels, TX; what type of Fig tree would you recommend beginning with? Do you know if they are available this time of year, or only in the Spring? TIA... Sandra C.,
@ScottHead5 жыл бұрын
I'm really not sure for your area, since it is arid and gets hot, any fig should be right at home. Mediterranean varieties would do best I think, but I'm not sure which ones those are. Check ourfigs.com and you can buy cuttings and young plants inn the spring there on their for-sale listings, or try figbid, or tinkerbugfigs.com I love New Braunfels, great place, a very significant life event for me happened there.:-)

Hi! I have 2 questions for you. I never planted figs before. I got fig trees from Home Depot but they’re not sure how old the trees are. You’ve probably seen them at Home Depot in 5 gallon nursery pots. Do you have any idea how old these trees could be? They are 3-4 feet tall, the largest trunk at lower 4 inches is about 3/4 inch thick. They had some small fruits at the main stems. My second question: when should I up pot them to a pot similar like yours (the blue and green pots) . I’m in southern Cal, zone 10a.
@ScottHead3 жыл бұрын
They are probably 2 years old, maybe 3. Fig trees can grow really fast in the right condition. I would pot them up. Here's an updated video on fig trees, should give you an idea of what to look for to tell if you should up-pot. kzbin.info/www/bejne/op6WomeMpLaIqck Also, follow this guy, Ross is the fig king: kzbin.info/door/Ch4xi7vaYdiuljzcdr4pBw

What is the purpose of proactively removing the yellowing leaves? I'm guessing they're not very helpful in terms of energy production for the tree? Why not leave them?
@ScottHead3 жыл бұрын
Keeps the tree from wasting resources trying to restore them to good health, and its just nicer without them. If they are yellow, they are on the way to being dropped anyway.

I'm going to repot my figs in a much bigger pots (in July 1), can I also cut the roots back 1/3, or will I kill them? My fig trees are 5-6 years old in a 5 - 25 gallon pots and I never root prune them yet.
@ScottHead4 жыл бұрын
You can and should up-pot ad root prune, but it is best to do that in dormancy, January/February. To do it in the height of summer can stunt them and stress them out.

There is a fig grower's forum (ourfigs.com) that has a great wealth of info and experts on figs. You can learn amazing things there. There are several ways to train and direct fig trees, I prefer a literal tree trunk with growth up high but also have sprawling bush shapes too (more fruit that way). Some people train their fig trees down guide wires or on a frame and they have two, four, six or more branches on each side running horizontal down the frame (called 'espalier') and that would be a nice way to grow a compact tree, Lots to enjoy about figs!

just put it in the ground already...figs get massive root systems. I put a 3 inch fig in the ground that had basically no roots and in 5 months it grew roots 2 feet out and 2 feet down.
@ScottHead5 жыл бұрын
That's why you should root trim and prune the trees and root prune if you grow in containers. Otherwise yes, in the ground they can grow huge! I will be planting the five best tasting figs from my collection in the ground in a few years.
@pedepy5 жыл бұрын
did you ever consider air pruning methods for your fig trees ? in theory you should never end up with roots so tangled up with air pruning, making better use of the limited pot space. Ive seen it for myself with a raspberry bush I had growing in a 10 gal bucket in which I had drilled 1.5 inch holes and taped landscaping fabric on the sides to keep the soil in.
@ScottHead5 жыл бұрын
I've considered it for sure, just haven't changed over to cloth pots which I plan to do in the future.

I just bought a fig tree from Costco and considered buying that exact container you showed/mentioned. Shouldn’t the container be a food grade quality for an edible fruit tree?
@ScottHead5 жыл бұрын
I think it should be if its important to you, I believe its not that big of a threat considering the low volume of figs I consume in relation to other things. You could get a different pot, just be ready to up-pot figs as they get larger, or root prune them if you want them to remain a certain size.

Why do you grow figs in pots? It looks like in your zone they should be fine in the ground.
@ScottHead5 жыл бұрын
They get too big in the ground, and it’s easier to care for them in pots when I need to protect them from freezes or move them to shade. Root pruning every four or five years is all I really need to do. Helps keep the trees small.

Don't add wood mulch at the bottom of the pot. I made that mistake and it became water logged and drown my plants. I make that a NO NO.
