Why not put the lettuce in the quart jars instead of transferring out of the gallon jar. Unnecessary extra step.

I have been out of the loop for awhile and had to set out the last couple garden seasons . My health has been very rough. I hope to be able to do some gardening this next season. I have missed some of your posts so I am working to get caught up .

Glad to see caraway seed. Always used it myself. Never found store bought with the seed. Also, in researching kraut, it mentioned temperature control can be critical. Too cold, no fermentation. Too warm, here comes the stinky.

my Great Mom used to make it, and it was in the cellar for our everyday use. After reading that, now, all the stuff we get the supermarket is pasteurized, I gave your method a try. Thank you so much for posting this. I have a feeling that this is going to be a way to keep a great probiotic way to keep our family healthy. Thank you!

Add one fresh carrots sliced to long thin strips to ferment with cabbage. Vinegar is no good... That's really no good. Thank you.

Thank you Sir for clear demo Sauerkraut with eisebein and kartoffelpuree. Best lunch or dinner in winter time. I will experiment with 3 green chillies chopped to half inch pieces to ferment with the cabbage.

My sauerkraut is fermenting with 2% of salt. I also add caraway seeds plus - give it a try once - one bay leaf at the bottom of the (usually 1liter) glass jar. I live in the tropics, so my kraut is ready after just five days and its super delicious. 😋 Greetings from Sri Lanka 🌴 🐘

I don’t think I’ve ever tried sauerkraut. I have heard that it causes unbearably foul smelling, room clearing flatulence. Is that true?

In the 1950s I helped my mother make sauerkraut. She used a kraut cutter, large mandolin! She would take the cores and cut them to the size of your finger and insert one in each quart jar! The cores would soften up and were a great treat that my sisters and I would fight over!❤

For any one who might need something less “diy” a wire waste bin from the dollar tree is great. But for larger amounts this DIY option is wonderful

I’ve done exact thing with a beautiful heirloom tomato from the store and must have gotten 20 tomatoes plants and 400 beautiful heirloom tomatoes! I’ve never done anything but dried on a paper towel method.. fermenting seems like a messy stinky unnecessary process!! I’ve really fallen for the purple Cherokee and Lava flow tomatoes!! So many awesome varieties!!

Looking good, should you deduct the weight of the core and scrap pieces from your salt formula? just thinking might have a better chance of not over salting that way. I just might have to give this a try. Thanks for the video.

Growing up in the 60s-70s my mother used 'Crock Jars'' for pickling. I still have a couple of them that I use for Kraut , pickling Corn etc.....None of them have the 'dreaded' red-lead based ring around the top!!!.....:>)

I'm retired and started gardening 3 years ago, my first step was creating leaf mould, it took almost 3 years to fully develop . I used it along the way, with horse manure compost, worm casting, and fish emulsion, I didn't till, built my soil up, I've had enormous success, unbelievable produce.

I know this video is old, but I like to heat leather gloves at 200F for 1 minute to open the pores, then apply the waterproofer. I like Nikwax or Skidmores (has beeswax). Plenty of others that are good too. Some condition more than waterproof, others are the opposite.
