i like the measurements, size comparison and writing sample parts of the video....i don't care that you are reading off of something, you're giving us interesting information

I know this is an older video (just over 4 years now) but I picked up one of these about a year or so ago. I can second the praise for the nibs on these! Superb, even in EF! Sometime between your review and my purchase they must've added (or originally included) a plastic barrel. I have the gun metal finish with matte grey barrel that is both light and not metal. I did find the slip cap rather stiff for a fair while but now it's reasonable. As good a writer as it is, however, it doesn't see as much use/carry as I hoped since I find the section pretty slippery, five rings notwithstanding. I find I have to re-grip it pretty often and then end up with the section unscrewing from the barrel so I do NOT use it for extended writing sessions -- quick notes only.

One polarizing aspect of this pen, IMO, is the heft. It is a heavy pen. I chose the TWSBI Eco over it due to this, but I do miss the LOOM's nib. Beautiful nib. IMO if it wasn't so heavy and they made the bottom portion lighter, which is where a large majority of the heft is located, plus a better grip, this pen would have been the winner in this price bracket. I do love the feedback on the nib, too. Great nib, but the section could use more tweaking and better gripping, and the weight cold be reduced for a more generally agreeable pen. If you like heavy pens and don't have oily hands or can write for long sessions with dry hands, this is a dream come true. This will destroy anyone's arthritis if they have it, lol... But darn, the Nib is dreamy.

Hi David. You might have mentioned that Graf is the German word for count. Thus, Graf von Faber-Castell denotes the title and name when the two families merged. Incidentally, the Count currently resides in Stein, where the company is headquartered. I believe that the knights are jousting, rather than dueling.

Thanks a lot for putting the pen next to Metropolitan and Lamy. I've been searching videos for size comparison. Always fun to watch your videos.

In Elementary school we used to stuff a spare full cartridge in the barrel (or the occasional rolled-up cheat-sheet ;), so I assumed the dummy one was for cleaning purposes. ...Yeah, we had to use fountain pens in school - I'm really not that old, Germany is just conservative.

Thank you for including a brief history of Faber-Castell. I've only the E-Motion of the brand and I enjoy it very much. The Loom appears to share the same nib set and looks like a great pen for the money. It's a bit chunky but likely designed to appeal to younger FP users. Thank you for another fine review.

I love the Faber Castell Loom, decent writer, little stiff fine nib, gives some feedback while writing; currently inked with Diamine Arctic Blue and the fine wet lines glow like dreams!

I have purchased about 5 Looms this year... I find the writing smooth for this price point. I actually prefer the Loom over any of my Safari pens. As a matter of fact, since some of the models I have bought are now discontinued, I was able to purchase them at a discounted price (less than any of my Safari AL). This a great pen for anyone who wants to start writing with a fountain pen and does not want to pay a great deal for a nice pen. Great video. Thanks. FS

Hello sir Between lamy nib vs loom nib which one do you choose? I have loom but I think Faber castell has better nib
@mellow-jello2 ай бұрын
My Gunmetal Matte Faber-Castell Loom is my go-to pocket size pen, and its F nib has little feedback and works well on all types of paper.
@chrisrap528 жыл бұрын
Nicely done again. Like the history. I do not have any Faber-Castell pens, so the video helps me decide if one is for me. For the money seems to be a god buy. In that price range, well made consistent writing are great traits. Thanks for sharing.

I have my eye on the FC E-motion Pure Black. It's too similar, though, to my Parker Premier Monochrome Black, which happens to be one of my best writers. It has a nice weight and a great feel in the hand.
@FigbootonPens8 жыл бұрын
+19sonkyu I have one of the stealth E-motions and like its unique design and very heavy weight. It writes well, but it doesn't quite match the same distinct feedback of the Loom. I believe it has something to do with the black coating on the nib.

i have the medium nib for the loom, ambition and e-motion and they are all very smooth, you can never go wrong with a faber castell medium steel nib

where I live, the loom is like 28$ and the basic is only 30$, what a steal. Before having the loom, I wanted to buy a gold nib, but it seems I'm extremely satisfied with faber-castell right now.

Thanks, David. I just came across this -- useful since I ordered one last Friday and it's in the mail now. Decided to try a broad nib. Given the lines you're getting from the M, looks like the broad will be generously broad!
@FigbootonPens8 жыл бұрын
+wetracy Thanks for watching! Yes, the medium is on the generous side. I haven't tried a FC broad nib yet...I hope it still has the distinct feedback of the medium. It really is special.

Very thorough review. However, I did find it interesting to understand why you find rubbing the indent on the finial as 'cool'? That MontBlanc 149 is way, way, way, way out of the price range (LOL). Was checking on one last nite with all of the 'trimmings', and it is going for $900+. The Faber Castell Loom is going for $40. Reminds me of the price range of a TWSBI Eco. If you had to compare that Faber with the TWSBI Eco, what are your thoughts? Can you get a Faber with a 1.1 stub??
@FigbootonPens8 жыл бұрын
+Kelley I haven't seen the Loom available in a 1.1. While I like the Eco, and the nib is very good for the $35 price, the nib of the Loom is significantly better in my opinion.

I’ve got both this in F and a diplomat aero M, this writes better than the diplomat steel nib, for me it does, just enough feedback.

Nice pen , I also like the basic which has the same excellent smooth nibs that you get with these pens. They are in my opinion much underrated and slightly overlooked which is a shame because they are excellent pens at an excellent price .Nice review
@FigbootonPens8 жыл бұрын
+matthew Beddow Thanks. The issues I have with the Basic, are mainly due to the version I ordered. I should have picked up the black carbon fiber version rather than the slick metal version. I like the rubber grip and nib though. You have to admit, it looks a little silly when posted. I believe it's the longest pen in my collection when posted...by a lot.
@matthewbeddow32788 жыл бұрын
Yes its is a silly length posted , I have the pearl version its nice

WHY would one want to reverse write??????

A lot of folks who used their fountain pens for drawing like to reverse write in order to get a thinner line when necessary for their art.

The drawback of not reading is that you might have to do multiple takes to get it right. However, I guess you can circumvent this by putting strategically placed segue/cutting to static image or something else, so you can transition between takes without anyone the wiser. Other thing I can think of would be putting the screen that you read the script out of very close to the camera (maybe put it directly under the lens) and making it bigger so you can sort of read it without taking your eyes off the camera. Anyway thanks for making these wonderful review videos!

I don’t see the problem. Just sit back and listen, I like that he’s taken the time to not sound random, instead he’s prepared detailed notes to go by. No different than someone reading a teleprompter on tv.
