Fight for the Wild takes viewers into the wild heart of Aotearoa and documents the desperate battle to protect it. It explores the notion of a Predator Free 2050 and asks whether this big, bold initiative is achievable - and if so, how?
Loss looks at the devastating effect introduced mammals have had on New Zealand’s unique wildlife.
In the first episode of Fight for the Wild, we discover the incredible and unique diversity of ancient Aotearoa and how, since the arrival of humans, so much has been lost. We meet the three introduced predators responsible for much of that loss - rats, possums and stoats - and find out about the carnage they continue to wreak on our native wildlife.
In remote Fiordland we watch kiwi chicks falling victim to stoats and in a hidden valley in Canterbury we meet New Zealand’s rarest forest bird and the incredible efforts to bring it back from the brink.
“New Zealand is the country in the world that has the highest proportion of our native species that are at risk of or threatened with extinction. Right now, we have something like 4000 species that are in trouble.” Kevin Hague
“We are the curators or the custodians of a whole lot of wonderful species. The time is now and it's never been so critical. Many of our species are still declining.” Andrea Byrom
“Are we going to watch these species disappear or are we going to save them?” Jan Hania
Made possible by the RNZ/NZ On Air Innovation Fund.

So beautifully done. Thanks so much for sharing. Found it hard not to cry. It’s very sad how much the world is being affected. We should be the care takers, not the rulers

Thank you so much for this documentary! Really I didn’t even know how bad our wildlife is being in rapid decline by these animals that were introduced into our country long ago. But thanks to the heroes of our country, who have a deep respect for saving our native animals. It’s really a shame that the situation is critical! We really need this message to reach the hearts of all New Zealanders and the crown 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

This is a spectacularly good new documentary from RNZ showing how dire the biosecurity and extinction crisis is hitting our native fauna with some spectacular cameo's from the hero's trying to protect them. If you didn't understand how important it is to be predator free watch this doco. To my knowledge outside of Antarctica our community on Rakino Island is the only human community that gets to live without rodents. Some of the heart felt observations from the sapiens interviewed were spectacular and I laughed hearing the Kaka chiming in all through the video. A really fantastic piece of work, bravo.

Good luck on this journey of protecting our beautiful homeland. A sad story, but one with hope for the future if everyone helps. LIving out of NZ the last five years I knew the work was happening before I left. Such a beautiful place it needs protecting. Kiwi from Virginia.

Very powerful. Spending time at inland sanctuaries like orokonui ecosanctuary and going into the Bush in the hills there is a huge difference. I wish people could see it and I hope that this will show so many people and get them behind a movement to save our birds and fish. We need events and groups to help. We need people to step up and tell people who are keen to help do this do that etc. I want to help but I dont no where is the best place to start and be the most effective with my time and resources.

Get in touch with your local conservation group and volunteer. You can also start trapping at home. Check out predatorfreenz.org forestandbird.org.nz etc. If you can't physically help there are always admin & education support roles that need filling.

A comment from across the ditch! The problems here in Australia are very similar as we see birds and animals facing challenges to introduced animal pests and plants. At present we have a mice plague in western NSW and the response is to poison them. Unfortunately native animals will eat them and in turn be poisoned. NZ has a very special and vulnerable environment also. I find this series depressing at times but part 4 is about hope. I feel that NZ is doing more than we are to protect the natural environment and seems to be better funded? I hope and pray that the very beautiful and special NZ environment can be saved by 2050 as hoped.

This is a beautiful documentary. The key takeaway is the fact that our current Government (along with all previous NZ governments) is taking no substantive 'boots on the ground action' on the climate and biodiversity crisis, which is civilisation ending. Likely much of the natural world shown in this video with go the way of humans. The physical science is uncontroversial and right on point; "human civilisation as we know it today is not compatible with survival in a world that has heated on average 4 degrees centigrade globally above the pre-industrial (average) global temperature circa 1850 (Professor Kevin Anderson Manchester University-Tyndall Climate Centre UK and Uppsala University Sweden). We are on the pathway to 4 to 6 degrees above pre-industrial by 2100. This means 8 degrees Centigrade increase on top of today's summer highs by 2100. Make no mistake it will be lethal to crops and lethal to much of the life on planet Earth. This is not about predators, the stoats and rats will likely die or experience near die off along with humankind and crops, many insect species, ocean and sea life, including coral reefs which are already dying- viz the Great Barrier Reef. We must wake up, take a cold shower, drink a strong coffee or two and change the way we live. And most of all change our homicidal economic extractive system that's driving this. Nature is the boss, not the human economics of our techno-feudal sort. If we don't stop what we are doing, Nature will put pay to us in short order. The system must change, we need deliberative democracy not the endless game of labour then national, which is the game played in parliament for the media to report. Labour and National are two cheeks of the same arse we can barely separate with the thin edge of a sheet of paper.

I love this series but it's apparent the captions have been finalised based off auto-captions, and not looked over (e.g. Kiore spelled as kyori), which is really disappointing for your Deaf viewers & those who rely on captions. It also means Māori kupu get caught up most as incorrectly captioned.

The biggest predator for nz native forest the humans. We sure need big bolt decisions that’s for sure. But not the way we go about it at the moment. Millions off trees been harvested over the last 150 years!! Some of our trees live for thousands of years. You not going to grow these forests back in a 100 years. The native wild live have lost their food supplies. For these forests to grow back we need patience and lots of it. Nature isn’t in a hurry yet everything is accomplished. You can’t poison a forest back to health
