@chibikensan

@@sugardaddy4714 lol Olympic fencing is to realistic sword fight as kunfu movies to real fighting. Realistic swrod fights can be made awesome. But movie choreographers dont have the knowledge nor the incentive to transition. It also requires more time and practice. Go check a video on adorea olomouc channel. Thay good demosntrations of what an actual fight might look like.

I think part of what makes the Princess Bride fencing duel so good is that it really leans into that and doesn't even try to seem realistic. Like, the fight is just something that's happening in the background and it's really about the back-and-forth they're having.

In the Star Wars clip, they cut a lot out, but in a 2 v 1 situation, the 2 want to attack in a line with one in front and one in back, while the 1 wants to keep the 2 in front in a triangle, and in the choreography of the entire fight, we see them do just that with the Jedi constantly maneuvering to put one of them behind Darth Maul, and Darth Maul countering by maneuvering so that he puts them both back in front of him. That choreography was absolutely brilliant. probably one of the best choreographed fight scenes in all of Star Wars.

If I remember right, Michelle Yeoh actually hurt herself (pulling a muscle really bad or something like that) shooting the scene that was shown in this, and I think it was early in production as well, which is why this is the best fight scene she has in the movie, because her fights had to be toned down so that she could still do them with an injury for the rest of the film. As a fencing coach for over 10 years, the fencing blades are "epees" not "foils" in the James Bond bit. The gauntlet of a fencing glove is often closed with velcro and there is a small opening for the body cord (which connects to the epee for scoring) to exit. Blades do occasionally find their way into that hole and draw blood. Bruising, small cuts, and "road rash" are common injuries in sport fencing. One time when I was just started out, I accidentally thrusted my epee all the way up someone's arm through the hole in their gauntlet. "Halt"(meaning "stop") was called immediately and the ref and I checked on my opponent to make sure he was OK. He was fine; we kept fencing after he closed his gauntlet a little tighter. It happens. Fencing is still statistically one of the safest sports.

As Joe said, it is she is not an "actual fight expert" or whatever he calls it, just someone who knows a bit and probably has some limited experience with the actual martial art. One mistake she made. During the "Die Another Day" analysis, she mentioned they were using foils with protective gear when actually they are using epees. It is also epee they are fencing because they are not using electric lames to indicate target area. They're wearing all white meaning the whole body is the target which would be epee fencing.

She does well at breaking down scenes and definitely knows a lot, but I'd have liked to see more critiques on the unrealistic techniques throughout all the videos. A few HEMA youtubers who do practice sword fighting have reviewed some of the clips in this video and had some different opinions about the bad choices that the fighters make. These clips are rife with hollywood shenanigans that would put you at a disadvantage in a real life scenario,. things like spinning around, making cuts without a hope of connecting, deflecting blows over and over and never following up with counter cuts. Choosing non-lethal attacks when a potential fatal blow is starring at them in the face. (like james bond one where he hits james in the back with the sabers guard instead of stabbing his back?)

13:59 yes but also no. Blade's sword is made of titanium. Men at Arms made a Blade replica out of titanium and when they took it to the sanding belt the sparks on that thing were insanely bright. he had to use welder googles and a breathing mask because of the fumes. so i imagine depending on the force sparks would have been easier with a titanium blade.

I do wish, in the Troy scene she would have talked about how unrealistic it would be to jab the point of your sword straight into the opponents shield like they do. That is a good way to break the point, or at the very least dull and or bend it. They are using Bronze swords so the tip would definitely get bent at the very least hitting into the shield like that. Also, they spend so much of the fight with their shields either at their side or behind them where it will do no good as it can block nothing when it is not between you and your opponents weapon. I find it very irksome when they bother to give the actors shields and then they spend the entire fight with the shield off to the side or holding it behind them.

Actually, Grabbing the sword is viable, It's more ideal if you have a glove, but even with bare hand, pulling back the blade wont just cut its way out of the hand, if the grip is strong enough, it can be pretty hard to just pull the blade away.

I loved this video and your conclusion. However, having been a three-weapon fencer, your point at 23:43 about the weapons they've been fencing with being "foils" is actually a little inaccurate. They are fighting with epees. They are not wearing the lames in the target areas of their body for foil (shoulder to shoulder, neck to crotch). Their target area is the whole body. Additionally, the large bell guard of each weapon indicates an epee as well. Otherwise, I loved your analysis of all the fighting styles in this break-down. I would love to meet, even virtually, and chat fighting at some time in our lives. You are a pleasure to listen to.

I had 2 personal thoughts. As far as blade (13:35), if I remember correctly, the material is some super natural material that would in theory be resistant to some of the blade damage. They are also super human (vampires) with super human strength/speed making the sparks more achievable(assuming the blades are glazing off each other and not cutting into each other). As far as Star wars, I was never a fan of the fight with Maul. While I appreciate the skill Maul's actor has, the strategy was so sub par IMO for people, who in this universe, are powerful fighters.
