As an aging fighter (43 y/o) who's cross trained a lot, some tai chi principles are really helpful in a fight (relaxation amidst intensity, distributing weight down to make me harder to throw, etc...), and tai chi has remained an awesome exercise for join strength and micro-muscles that don't get hit in weight training. As with most of your vids, pressure testing is key, and if you're just using one system to fight, you're gonna have a hard time.
@neokimchi2 жыл бұрын
yeah I'm not an older guy but i train tai chi quite a bit. i like tuiso but initially didn't think it was that productive, until i had my first bjj session in a long time, and suddenly found myself having a MUCH easier time finding strength and structure without burning a ton of muscle energy. it was not subtle. but push hands as a sport is a different conversation, and honestly this guy does not seem be at a high level in it. he's just a master of the forms i guess.

I have some experience in capoeira and it's a similar principle, you get used to a certain flow and when you bump into a beginner who is frantically kicking and coming into contact you're all thrown off. I would not try to mess with our main teacher though, at high level those guys also practice hand strikes, take downs etc in addition to the devastating kicks and insane fitness level.

After all, the demostration consisted in showing individual, agreed techniques. So, for example, if you push me, I will answer in this way. And then a person from the audience comes out who wants to try the same thing, but does not do it, but introduces an element of free sparring. This is my understanding of what happened. If a man in the audience wants to make unassumed techniques then he should say "hey let's do push hands" and then we would have a completely different picture, I presume.

If you had some tai ji techniques mixed with some direct strikes - it can catch you off guard and be quite useful. But the internal aspect of martial arts takes a long time to develop and today’s masters might not even have them at combat level proficiency. The internal kung fu does lend itself to health, especially for those that have lost some of their vigor.

Fun fact: according to a doctoral dissertation presented at the Lougborough University by this gentleman called "Gehao Zhang" (pages 63 and 64, but the whole thing is really interesting), it was this Wu family who supposedly found the first main text that reffers to this Martial Art as "Taijiquan", a probably partially faked manuscript now known as "The Salt Shop Manuscript". I like to see situations of that kind. In practically all martial arts exhibitions it is a given that the "lesser" partner is a willing and compliant partner. Usually there is no quick fix for non compliance or active resistance. To be clear about this, for a clean and clear exhibition, some compliance is helpful. But a master ought to be able to overcome none compliance or resistance. If not capable of overcoming, do not ever do exhibitions of techniques. It makes the so-called Master look supremely silly.

This is the answer I was looking for, the random dude from the crowd obviously knew the form for pushing hands as you can see them follow it - while raising their hands. Many don't understand this "dance" because they have never "pushed hands" before. The close proximity and slow movement aligned with your partner is only half of the exercise, wherein strike opportunities are traded. Just because the random got a few strikes doesn't mean the master failed. As you said "mastery" in Tai Chi (from my understanding) is that of sensing and perceiving - allowing "energy out".

The reason students always go flying in these kind of demonstrations is that they’re cooperating with the teacher by not adjusting their stance to regain their balance like a normal person would if they felt off-balance. Which means once they do lose their footing they have to make these big backward leaps to regain their balance. If you leaned back further and further and waited for the last possible moment to correct your posture to avoid falling the same thing would happen to you.

The challenger in this case is very likely experienced in Taijiquan tuishou (and because someone already misunderstood and responded, I said experienced, not skilled. He's not good, just done it before). It very much looks that way from an experienced viewpoint. It is not that he is showing great skill but he knows exactly when to let go, how to refrain from over-extending himself and resting his weight on his own legs rather than falling into any trap (falling onto the opponent when enticed). This guy has certainly pushed before and knows the pace and pattern of the game. This is probably why he wanted to make a showing of challenging this "master". These video discussions are interesting but there is always the tendency to miss the important details without a background in the art or related arts to what we are seeing. You can see many comments on here (as well as the general idea of the commentator) that this is a random guy who is.. proving again that Taijiquan or pushhands is fake. Although there are unfortunately many examples of exactly fake Taijiquan it is important to understand that originally it was not fake and there are still surviving examples of schools/teachers/practitioners who treat it as a non-mystical and very practical martial practice without any fakery. What the "master" is attempting to show here is a 'too good to be true' example of magically manipulating his own compliant student who provides a stiff arm response for his to launch the guy, or alternatively a compliant ragdoll for his teacher to toss around as desired. In the real world practical context an opponent or even practice partner will offer neither of these things and the exchange will look entirely different. Generally speaking Taijiquan has three ranges, like most other arts; kicking (distance) striking (broken contact) and grappling. Tuishou (push hands) is basically a set of partner practices that sits in the transitional area between striking (sanshou of broken contact) and grappling ranges. It can deal with the inner striking range as well as the tight grappling range. As soon as practitioners break contact and back away it is basically violating the terms of the tuishou practice, which generally seen to be focusing on sticking contact one way or the other. An interesting measure of Taijiquan skill or martial realism is examining whether a practitioner/teacher can handle range transition, and this tends to be a trend across many 'fake' examples. When such teachers break down, or are exposed in these videos we normally see that they look very good with their own student but when faced with someone who forces them into a less than idea range they have no plan nor ability. In this case this teacher looked fine with his student (although not believable) but when the challenger pressed his range and closed the gap the teacher mostly failed. Then the teacher tries to attack in demo fashion but the challenger pulls away giving him nothing to use. The next entry by the challenger the teacher is then pulling away and retreating at every touch. This is showing the fear and the inexperience of fluid range abilities. If this teacher was legit he should have been able to allow this challenger to pass ranges and had something to offer other than just retreat. What this is showing is that outside of his own students he has nothing useful to offer at striking contact range, and totally uncomfortable at grappling range with even less ability and just resorts to fear. The legit traditional schools and teachers of Taijiquan are fairly few and sparse as commercial money tends to favor hype and fakery, but they do exist. It is unfortunate that few more mainstream outlets such as this channel have the knowledge to find and examine the real examples. Here is an example of my teacher from years back entertaining the attempts of visiting students to have a try at him while trying to teach some concepts. These are friendly exchanges but also not compliant and can provide a view of what a real martial practitioner freely improvising really looks like as opposed to the kind of hyped up crap that we see in so many debunked demos on youtube: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKPCZaKMj8aDmrc Here is another example from way back. I was training with him at the time and I was certainly not compliant, but the second guy who shows up at 3:08 is totally an unknown quantity who just showed up at the park with his kid and was curious. He also had a little try, and this is a very good example of what a fairly inexperienced but intent person looked like having a try against a real practitioner. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2LIqWewptBkb9U I hope some of the skeptics and naysayers out there eventually do learn about the real art of Taijiquan. Happy practice everyone-

This is not hilarious at all because the master did ok. The challenger clearly flew back when he finally committed to a move at 1:53

I like to watch Tai Chi and would probably practice it myself at some point but as a martial art it isn't effective, though there are probably some useful principles contained in it. It certainly doesn't give even a master some incredible powers.

Thanks for this great channel, I wish I could understand chinese so your translations are appreciated. I will probably just be a troll in defense of fake martial arts but it's still a great channel.

Im planning to study martial arts not because i want to be a professional fighter someday but to give myself a push because everytime theres trouble my hand wants to punch someone but my brain and heart keeps on telling me to stay calm and just let it slip. I want to do this for myself as self defence.

I don't know if anyone here knows anything about computer engineering, but the way I think of martial styles like Taijiquan, Aikido, and Wing Chun, are the same way I think of computer languages. There are low level and high level languages. This does not refer to the difficulty of the language, but how fundamental they are to a device's function. High level languages are things like Python, C, Java. Low level languages which are more fundamental to the device doing anything at all include Verilog, Assembly, and FORTRAN. If you want to build and program a device yourself, you must learn the low level languages before you can even consider anything on the high level. Everything I mentioned before, as far as martial arts go, are high level martial styles, which are great to learn and practice, but if you want to use them in combat, we need low level stuff. Low level means your wrestling, kickboxing, Muay Thai, the likes. When you're programming your own original device, you MUST master low level code before you ever attempt anything high level. The same goes for martial arts.

Tai Chi is only for relaxing and strengthen one's mind and find inner peace. It's not for combat. Tai Chi Quan is for combat. However I highly recommend Tai Chi for inner peace.

1.53 When his opponent push back, a . . . (what's the word?) Tai Chi master, would move & let him pass . . even pull opponent to the ground. Tai Chi is . . soft art, it didn't . . force thing to happen. He might be a genuine Tai Chi teacher, but here, he force thing instead of using the art. It's like he forgot to applied the principal. He need refreshment on sparring train. Badminton or tennis, you watch and strike when it's the right moment, not before, not after. That moment only as long as a blink of eyes.

A tai chi master is a teacher and he is not unbeatable as any good will gladly teach his students who are expected to excell and develop their tai chi like an artist does with clay.

Student legs were paralelal while guy legs were in combat position, which means he has floor support and divided weight, which means this technique would never work out on him, I think agaisnt a student anything can work out.

I'm not saying this guy's techniques are real, I don't know, but it is similar to something I've done in the past. But I'm also a big guy, 6'4' 200 pounds plus when I did it and this thing I use to do would be to tap an opponent quickly with my palms under your clavicles to offset an opponent's balance then I would plant myself and lift them as I pushed them as hard as I could, throwing them backwards. I've thrown a buddy of mine pretty far back like that when he was training with me but I was putting a lot more into it. This guy's technique requires a willing opponent to show it, mine you don't.
