Benavidez has his position because Canelo took out all the other top fighters not because anything special Benavidez did when his top opponent in 10yrs at 168 is one of Canelo's leftovers. There are other fighters Benavidez could be facing if he wanted to build himself up and make the fight bigger like Morrell who'd at least be one of the only fighters with size and upside Benavidez has ever faced, or Munguia like Barrera suggested. Or like I said in another comment, Benavidez could've tried to move up to challenge Bivol if he really wanted to try to show Canelo up and prove he can do better, but nah lol. The funniest part about Benavidez fans acting like he's owed the world just for getting taken the distance by one of Canelo's leftovers is that Munguia who's still new to the division at least made a statement by taking out Ryder

Man don’t over exaggerate, canelo can get outboxed by David’s volume but Benavidez doesn’t have as much power as let’s say a bivol, or heavy hands like munguia… There’s a big chance canelo ko’s benavidez with a body shot, I’m a benavidez fan too but his top two opponents while more athletic and supposedly “slick” than canelo once their gas tank was out it was over. Canelo does gas out but he has something they don’t which is head movement and excellent counterpunching, I think canelo should go back to throwing combos that’s how his ko’s came or body shots, he has power but it’s not a one shot ko power, munguia has more power than him as well, it’s not one shot stopping power either, he does great combos too Canelo won’t lose his career it’ll be a great fight even if he loses, the media might start to focus on the winner but that wouldn’t be the end, u would still have the rematch, a few more high profile fights and he will retire as one of the top boxers still, I hope canelo vs benavidez happens this year, hopefully sooner than later

Then out of the blue, he's breaking faces, damaging arms, bust people's faces, one punch knockouts... fights Bivol & he couldn't put a mark on him. His conditioning) as you stated, he does fade away & I do agree that he will need to knockout Benavidez early. He'll have to take advantage of head movement early. Benavidez doesn't have the one punch power but his power remains respectable throughout the fight & he actually increases output as the fight progresses. Benavidez has long arms, is quick & he'll either hit his opponent coming in or moving out.. but he's hitting them & that makes his opponents question their next move & while they think David is attacking.

Something missing from Canelo's resume? He's done it all and more. He has 20 wins over champs which puts them among the most of any Mexican fighter and more than anyone today. He's the only Mexican to claim Ring belts in 3 divisions (only the 4th to do it period). The only Mexican to unify 3 divisions. The only Mexican to become 4 belt undisputed in any division. Even at 175, he's only the second Mexican to be champ despite leaping up multiple divisions. But with Canelo critics are always looking to complain and change goalposts. Barrera himself said prior if Canelo went on to secure 168 undisputed he'd have a case for Mexican GOAT but now there's something missing when he's only added to his resume since? And even when he was set to fight Bivol, Marquez was in the media calling Bivol a cherrypick and bum just to not give him credit for the risk he was taking. The only one not keeping the same energy is Benavidez who has one of his leftovers as his top win in 10yrs at 168 and dumped his belt twice, rejected a Plant unification, never fought manadatories Smith (and Yildirim) and rejected a 175 tite shot.
