The excitement I felt as I kid when I got a new one of these books is still unsurpassed to this day. Even looking at certain covers out of these gives me goosebumps! Used to curl up in my room, in the bath, in the spa, in the back of the van, where-fucking-ever, and just get wrapped up in these worlds.

@@johnsmith8906 Man, hard to think off the top of my head lol. I will say Forest Of Doom always had a special place in my heart as it was my first. Also really loved Scorpion Swamp for the map making, Road Warrior and Robot Commando for the machine battles. Greatest of all though wasn't even a gamebook - it was Titan. Man I re-read that book just delving into the lore so many times!

I used to love these as a kid growing up (still do in all truth). Island Of the Lizard King was the first I got, and although I agree it's certainly not the best, it holds a lot of nostalgia. It's a book that has a kind of King Kong feel to it, as you go about exploring the island. I think my fave might be Appointment With F.E.A.R, though Deathtrap Dungeon runs it close. I was actually inspired to write a short story inspired by the Fighting Fantasy books, in which You are the hero. Bunged it on Smashwords for free. The story is called "You Are The Monster" (see what I did there!). Also pretty sure it inspired another story (a little longer but written in a style that mixes things up a bit... like the books)... This one I entitled "26 Minds on Standby". It can also be downloaded for free on Smashwords.

I think my issue with Starship Traveller was that there were a lot of interesting ideas barely used so I had all these game mechanics I read through and got excited about and on some playtgroughs didn't touch at all. Moreover, the one true path skipped most of the interesting stuff altogether which was a crying shame, really. It really took a lot of the fun out of replaying it. As a choose your own adventure story I thought it was actually really fun (the weird robot planet and the aliens who try to clone your crew were bits I remember very fondly, and there was a real variety in the obstacles you could face), but as a gamebook it didn't really work for me at all. In that respect I thought Rebel Planet was a lot better and in fact remains one of my faves.

I’m gonna have another read of Rebel Planet today 👍🏻

I just got into FF again after being away from it for more than 30 years, and I think I'm already enjoying it even more than the first time around, creating youTube videos of my playthroughs as I go along. I sold off all my FF books back in the day, of course, but now I've bought them all again, as well as many others I never had back then. eBay makes it so much easier to indulge in nostalgeekery, and KZbin makes it so much easier to share with a community of like-minded geeks. Even though the things we hark back to are old, this is the golden age for enjoying them or any other kind of nostalgia.

eBay makes it more expensive...mage hunter
@hakonsoreide4 жыл бұрын
@@BoardGameBollocks Don't I know it just having been FF shopping over the last few weeks. Not even just Magehunter. Deathmoor seems to be joining Magehunter and Revenge of the Vampire in the £100+ price bracket now. Siege of Sardath and Knights of Doom are still sub £100, but they too are getting closer. It's a seller's market right now, it seems, as a resurgence in popularity coincides with old geeks getting to the age where they get more nostalgic and can finally afford whatever they want. I might give the four or five most expensive ones a miss for now as they cost more than the rest of the books combined.

Forest of Doom was my first experience of FF. Was hooked forever after although playing Black Vein Prophecy as a kid was confusing as hell. Didn't get them until well into the 90's though so they all cost £3.99, and it wasn't until I started collecting them years later that I found out about the numerous reprints and different costs.

I will always have a special place in my heart for "City of Thieves" it was the first Fighting Fantasy book I ever stumbled across and,believe it or not,I never knew where it came from.I found it on top of a pile of books in my home one day and my whole family swore blind that they never bought it but I read it and I was instantly hooked.

I think a lot of the appeal of the books is the excellent internal line art. Could never get into Starship Traveller despite being more a sci-fi fan than a fantasy fan Some downsides of the books One really bad aspect of the books are the sudden death paths . I will also say the combat can be a grind

I'm a little late to the party here. As a kid who fell in love with D&D in the very early 80's, these books were a lifeline when there was no-one to play with. I still get out my old green-spine copy of Warlock to play through from time to time (good thing about getting old is my memory's not so good, the damned book still surprises me when I go back to it). I've been lucky enough to get Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone to sign it for me, and its the book I've used as a gateway drug to get my kids into reading (it's worked like a charm). Your honest, unvarnished opinions are a breath of fresh air in a sea of sponsored shills, never change!

If Steve Jackson intended Starship Traveller to be hard, he must've been drunk when he was writing it. You can quite literally roll 7/14/7 on EVERY SINGLE crew member and easilly beat the game once you've found the path of least resistance, because you don't need to make a single die roll to get right through it. To each his own and all but....isnt Starship Traveller universally regarded as one of the worst books in the series? I know I thought it was egregiously bad. I believe even Steve Jackson is on record saying he doesnt like it. There is hardly any ship to ship combat and the winning path has NO dice rolls. For a "game" book, that is really lame. Oh, and all that time you spend rolling up your crew? Pointless.

I was 10 when I read it first and at that age I loved it. I didn’t analyse or dissect its moving parts so to me it was and still is unique in style and substance. Thanks for offering your point of view...this is why FF still survives...cos people are still talking about it.

@@BoardGameBollocks I really feel this book would benefit most from a "Redux" edition. Expand it to 600 or more sections with longer adventures on the various planets and of course more space combat. And thank you for taking the time in making the video. I agree, all these years later and I could still spend hours talking Fighting Fantasy with other fans.

There is a lot of contenders for worst book in the Series. Space Assassin for its cringy tone and nonsense adventure. Star Strider (another sci-fi) for its second half featuring a giant maze. Chasms of Malice for its insanely difficult dice roll and one roll combat system. Not to mention that a key item is found with dice roll (1/3 chance to pick up).

Why the need for background music?
@BoardGameBollocks5 жыл бұрын
Requested by viewers...
@hakonsoreide4 жыл бұрын
@@BoardGameBollocks you'll probably get more viewers requesting you don't need background music than the other way around if you do a poll. Even if more people want background music, people might have different things in mind separating them into different groups, and so the biggest group would be the ones against it altogether.

Hi mate. Will you be reviewing Ian Livingtone’s and Steve Jackson’s new Fighting Fantasy 40th year book reviews? I’ve got both, but always good to hear your thoughts. I’ve started Steve’s book and it’s very traditional to start with which I love. Who knows where it will go however knowing him.
