Tide? Current? Schmurern! I give up. For 30 years, taking the boat up and down the Inside Passage, from Olympia to SE AK, it was always the same problem. To wifey..."Honey we got to get underway at 0430 'cause we got to make the ebb at Deception Pass or Seymour Narrows..or just fill in the blank." "The what?" "The ebb, the slack, when I'm not pushing against a current!" The current?" You know the tide that go back and forth moving all that water from or into the Pacific in and around these islands, that creates a current?" "Tide?, what about them?" "Oh forget about it!!"

Deception pass is a monster if you don’t know how to navigate it. I’ve been through it with over a one foot rise in water from west to east. Good to have some surplus horsepower for that turbulence.

It all depends on how you define tide. The Gate can be a biotch if you are against the tide. Been though there a lot of times on sailboats. Sometimes the people walking along the river walk faster than the boat can go if you miss the tide. The history of the Gate is amazing when you read about all the explosives that were used.

On the equinox, March 21 and September 21 the sun shines straight down the east-west streets at sunrise and sunset. This is intuitive when you think about it since on the equinox the sun is directly over the equator. Hence, all over the world, any east/west street would be subject to this phenomena.

Nice video Tim, a pleasant way to view and enjoy the New York Skyline, I felt sorry for all those cars chokes up there! Over here we use the terms, Tidal stream Tidal flow, Tidal current, I suppose different folk just use different terms for the same thing. Incidentally, we also have the name "gat" and sometimes "gut" that refers to a deeper water cut or passageway through a sandbank. All the best to you Tim and thank you.

As always Capt, really enjoy the channel. Regarding the tide versus current debate- it might be helpful for folks to understand that current is the force imparted by the horizontal movement of water and tide is the vertical movement of water however, you are correct in that you are fighting the tide. Tide may rise and fall but the horizontal movement of water the rising waters create would be a "tidal current", whereas the tide itself is bringing more water into a constricted area and is therefore creating a force vector. These frequencies and amplitudes can be calculated, just like a height of tide, by the time and total cycle. We have the same discussions here all the time as it is often hard for folks to understand that what creates the current force is the tide as opposed to a current created in a river that is created by the flow of water and differential pressures. Keep the videos coming, it's always great to see things in action!! Next time you are down in Lauderdale visiting Courtney I'd love to catch up.

Wow, I've done that run a few times delivering a sailboat and when the tide is fair on a Saturday evening, we were passing cars on the FDR as they sat in traffic. But once I mis-timed it and had to fight the tide (OK, current) and could hardly move, especially in that area of the eddy. I'm impressed with how much power you have to be able make 5 or 6 knots against the tide and still have some in reserve. Very interesting video, Cap. Keep 'em coming! CUOTO

LOL 4200. I had a 5 HP long shaft kicker on the J/24 and we had an 18 HP Atomic 4 on the 30 footer. Not hardly 4200!! No wonder we were slower than the FDR traffic in that foul tide! But with the Main up and motor going in a fair tide we passed the FDR traffic. As you said, the tide is everything there. Better plan ahead in a sailboat !! Thanks to Mr. Eldridge! @@TimBatSea

It would be cool to see NY harbor. I have commented a few times on various vids and 3 or 4 knots current is huge (we usually use mph/not in the ocean). Getting up to bonneville locks sometimes your in 7-8 mph current, so it makes you at .5 or .2 mph over ground for about a 4 mile stretch. Then it is the dance of how shallow you want to risk vs speed because less current. Nothing like getting too close to the fast water and knowing you just added another half hour to this push with a 10 second mess up but as every captain knows you just deal with it. At the same time tide dictates currents so yeah i'm just worried about it, we have 140 miles of river before the first locks.

I was on Randall's Island Sunday and you can drive/park right next to the river. I took a picture of the river headed right underneath Hell Gate from the south and you can literally see one current running southbound in the middle of northbound currents. Actually parked just a little south of the bridge (there's a soccer field there). Really nasty current... I could see where it's problematic. Also, just FYI- it's housing the largest of the "undocumented" in NYC in a huge tent... I got stopped and had to turn around on a narrow road. A lot bigger than it looks from the Triboro (yeah, RFK my ass). Interesting though, they have a huge psych hospital and the NYC fire academy on the islands.

The best viewing streets are the wide, two-way avenues with unobstructed Hudson River views to the west: 14th Street, 23rd Street, 34th Street, 42nd Street and 57th Street. I'm sure it's more spectacular from your vantage point on the East River than on the street. I totally agree with you about the food in Spain! I could eat tapas, paella and fideua every day for the rest of my life. Just not a fan of Spanish breakfasts which, for me, tended to be bocadillo de jamón (ham sandwiches). I had gotten complacent and my bad habits of snacking in front of the TV caught up to me. When I became single and started sailing a 25' Lancer, I was staying out on lakes every weekend and generally active all the time. Wasn't trying to lose weight, it just happened. Many thanks, that is a huge difference. And, I'm loving the NYC scenery, when I visit there, I always take a few ferry rides just to watch the show.

Do small 16ft boats mess you up if they steer clear of you? I run my personal boat thru there during the summer. I just try to give bigger boats plenty of room. I'm just a amateur.

Does the incoming tide come in from both ends of the East river and meet somewhere?
@TimBatSea

Thank you for watching. The tide flows to Long Island Sound and bunches up there. CUOTO
