I was born into a family with a violent alcoholic and mentally ill father. There was violence, abuse and neglect throughout my entire childhood. I was selling drugs for my Dad at 15 and was taught to screw people over fight and drink and basically live a corrupt life. The police were at my house many weekends and when my brother came of age he also became a violent alcoholic and the abuse continued. It's taken me nearly 40 years to unlearn those lessons and become a happy person. Now because of the mistakes i made drinking myself to deal with severe PTSD I have a life sentence and will never have the opportunities of people born of good parents. I have done a lot of volunteer work over the years, made money for charity, donated blood for years and am on the bone marrow doner list. I give money back in the shop and make it known if I am undercharged so I pay the correct price. I work very hard and often do extra unpaid hours. I am a Buddhist and work hard to support people and make them smile and laugh every day. I haven't been in trouble due to alcohol for 10 years and am T total. Despite all of this I can never know what it is like to be free of the horrific past I was born into. The government should offer a cleansing program where you can work off your record over say 5 years. Honest people who made mistakes or who where born into hell will sign up whilst career criminals won't. Give us a chance at life because everyone reading this has knowingly walked out of a shop after being undercharged or smoked weed at college. None of us are perfect and many of the people with a record where born into the worst of circumstances.

The DBS is nothing more than a money making organization.It's confusing at the very least and ineffective at the worst. People make mistakes we're only human. Our personal information is laid bare for prospective employers to see and it is instrumental in costing people jobs as whether we like it or not we will be discriminated against. The service itself is chaotic and disorganised. I waited for 3 months on 2 separate occasions for what effectively was a duplicate certificate.I could go on and on about this government scam.I do however accept that working in certain situations it is deemed necessary but this video is a prime example of the stupidity of the system and the pressure it puts on individuals,who need to work to live.

If we truly believe that justice involves the rehabilitation of the offender then there should be a process by which someone should be able to have their record scrubbed, PROVIDED they can show evidence of character reformation as I believe they do in France. I confess to having a personal stake in this my father was a career criminal who during a long stretch in prison decided to go straight. He kept out of trouble, took a job in the prison, got his A-Levels and started a degree from the Open University (which he finished after release). Fortunately he found a sympathetic employer, but not everyone manages to do so. Thirty years after release (and not a single brush with the law since), is it really necessary for an employer to know what he got up to in his early twenty's?

This is the only place I feel that I am able to express my distress at being unfairly penalised by changes to the CRB system, so I apologise if this appears to be an inordinately long post, but please read it as it may change your opinion about the nature of our Draconian criminal justice system, especially in relation to minor offences. I went through a difficult period in my teens and was arrested on two separate occasions for public order offences (using threatening words and behaviour). A few years later in my early twenties, while walking to an all-night garage with a friend after a night out, we borrowed a bicycle from two girls we met on the way. However, we were stopped by the police and it turned out that the bike actually belonged to the post office. Although mildly amusing, the thing that really annoys me about this incident is not that the girls lent us a stolen bike, or that we were both too inebriated to notice, but that the police still brought it to trial even though it was clear that we were both telling the truth, the officers involved even accepted that we were telling the truth at the time. We were both given a conditional discharge. My minor criminal record prevented me from pursuing several employment opportunities, but I happily settled into driving work and eventually became an LGV driver. However, I suffered a serious pelvic injury due to a spilled load in 2006, and the prognosis was bad. I was advised that I needed to find a more suitable sedentary form of employment. Consequently, I did some retraining and began applying for office-based roles. After applying for a zillion vacancies I had a job offer subsequently revoked when my CRB check still listed these spent convictions. At that time it was relatively easy to dispute a CRB record, and all the offences were eventually removed from my record after I disputed it. I was subsequently able to find an office based role within the NHS after a fully clear enhanced check. I later received compensation for my injuries as a result of my accident, and I decided to pursue my interest in English Literature with the intention of becoming an English teacher - a vocational role rather than a job. I exceeded all my expectations, I gained a First Class Honours BA in English Lit and Language and went on to receive a Distinction level MA from King's College London. I was accepted onto a Teacher Training Course and was due to start when, to my horror, my Enhanced CRB check arrived with the previously removed offences reinstated - I was unaware that the law had changed and I had not acknowledged the offences on my application as I believed that they were no longer pertinent - who would given the circumstances? I reluctantly withdrew from teacher training. The nature of the terms detailing the offences give the impression that I am a thug and a thief, and none of the nuanced circumstances surrounding my arrest - they are labels that undermine the reality of my true nature and character. I made some silly mistakes over 30 years ago and I am still being punished for them. I initially contacted the CRB and was advised that I needed to contact my local constabulary directly, which I did several times but received no reply. I just gave up, demoralised. Since withdrawing from Teacher Training prior to the due commencement date, I have experienced similar issues. One interview felt like a court case during which I was expected to "explain" my criminal record, I felt ashamed and embarrassed for nothing. That was for a £16,000 a year desk job, and I walked out feeling like a criminal. During my last interview, one of the interviewers talked to me as if I was something she had dragged into the room on the sole of her shoes. I have since done a couple of minimum wage factory jobs on a temporary basis, which haven't required any checks. I have suffered severe bouts of anxiety and depression over all this, but nobody seems to care. It appears to me that the law sets out to penalise people from poorer backgrounds for minor offences by leaving them with an undue stain of immoral criminality. However, it's people in positions of authority that commit the crimes which are most damaging to society, as the recent banking crisis has demonstrated, but because of their positions such people remain free to enjoy the pleasures of their ill-gotten gains and the undue plaudits bestowed upon them by their equally immoral and corrupt peers. If I don't find a way out of this mess soon I am in danger of losing my home, and my life will become totally pointless. Surely that is too big a price to pay for a few silly indiscretions that have harmed nobody but myself?

I don't understand the younger female as my convictions were wiped aged 16 so why would hers not have been?. They are talking about wiping adult criminal records but if employers are unaware and a person reoffends I can see a lot of people seeking redress through the law. A friend of mine has just done 2 years. I have said I would employ him but only in certain roles. Employers have to have the full facts to help them when decision making.

Unlock are arguing that the DBS system as it currently stands actually stands in the way of rehabilitation of people with criminal records and tarnishes their life chances long after they've gone on the straight and narrow. In France I believe that if you can show evidence of reformation of character you can apply to a judge to scrub your record after a period of 5 years (doesn't apply for sexual offences or murder ).

Well thats a sound way of doing it, but a blind cut off date is not the way to go. Another thing, a school kid that gropes the ass of their teacher gets the record for life but another kit that tries to burn down the whole school with the pupils in it gets a chance to wipe the record? One is a life long stigma the other is what, a mistake? I don't get the line people draw, arson is in the sex crime category to me whenever the arsons target has people in it.

The truth shouldn't be hidden. What needs to be addressed is the stigma for having a criminal record. I've broken a dozen laws or so, some because I didn't know it was illegal, didn't realise I was doing it... or just didn't see any harm. I've never recieved any criminal record because none of them were worth reporting or prosecuting. No doubt most people who watch this video will have Ben or broken some kind of law and gotten away with it. These are not necessarily bad people or untrustworthy individuals. Given that this is sheer common sense then the actual reality of a criminal record should merely lead to a request for clarification from a future employer. What is the point of rehabilitation of a criminal if society doesn't recognise it? Do not hide criminal convictions, do not judge them unduly either. A bank may not want a serial fraudster working in their bank, but someone who mooned a cop car as a teenager can probably still be considered for the job.

Here my story and yes I did do some of the crimes while young and naive but one crime I didn’t even actually do This is how I wrecked my chances of possibly moving to Spain now When I was 15 in 1984 I stupidly got into the wrong crowd and got arrested for attempted burglary of a dwelling them days you was given a first warning but even more stupidly while waiting for my warning I got arrested again for stealing from a fizzy pop factory around the corner where I lived even though I never actually had any drinks on me but while my so classed friends where there they found a air pistol and threw it over the fence and dumbo me picked it up and when the police turned up and I was arrested with it in my possession the warning I may of got was dismissed and I was taken to court and charged with attempted burglary as well shoplifting as well I think some sort of firearm offence I was convicted and given 20 pounds fine and conditional discharge Fast forwards 30 years never been trouble and my son gets into wrong crowd talk about history repeating itself lol and the police get a warrant to search my house little did I know he hidden a very small amount weed in the shed he wasn’t there at the time and when the police found it obviously denied it was mine but I was taken out of the room and told by the officer if I don’t admit it’s was mine everyone will be arrest and taken to the station,there was no way I’d let my partner and two children both under five go there so I had no choice but to say yes ok then it’s mine Tbh if I’d of known now I’d of said no ,anyway they decided to give me a police caution I really didn’t know that was probably he worst thing to except as I thought it would only stay on record for a while and be wiped not f...ing 100 f...ing years I’d of been better off taking my chances in court and let them prove it was mine but I just wanted done with the matter thinking it wouldn’t effect me as I was law abiding and not into crime Anyway welcome to present day never had any more problems with the law and decided had enough of the uk and decided wanted to move to Spain but getting a visa now looks as likely as getting a kiss off the pope for forgiveness I had a disclosure police record sent to me and it looks terrible looks like im some sort of hardened criminal and you need to get a police certificate to apply for any visa if you plan to immigrate to the EU Talk about f...ing things up from almost 40 years ago and then again 10 years ago for a small amount of weed I think it’s totally wrong your punished forever for minor crimes no matter how long ago I suppose the moral of the story is today you may not care but tomorrow you will don’t get caught up in crime specially any type of drugs no matter how small if you don’t want to pay the price in the future I heard recently that lots of records got wiped off the police records there’s hoping one of them was mine lol but I very doubt it Is there any slim chance of getting a visa for Spain even though I know the answer is no specially after brexit

I really don't see this getting through, criminal records act as a precautionary measure and a statement that you were in state of mind and mentally aware of your wrong doings hence why if your convicted under the Mental Heath ACT it is not a criminal offence per se and won't go on the criminal record. While it does have a inherent effect when it comes to employment, the employer bares all responsibility of the safety of their employees and customers.

A young student aged 14 is in trouble at the school I work at. He used phishing methods, and also a packet sniffer/keylogger to get into his classmates accounts. They are upset because he got into female students accounts and accessed their private photos (these photos were not pornographic or illegal, but they were private vacation/family photographs) He also left taunting messages for these girls. The girls parents are furious and complained to the school. As the IT technician I had to write an official statement with what I know. The police are now involved and he is due to turn himself in at the police station this week or next, to be formally arrested. I get what he did was wrong, but I think arresting this boy is way over the top. He is only 14. I myself messed with the school computers and changed desktop backgrounds etc, and got in trouble for it. (I did not mess with any girls however) It makes me worried that if I was born in this millenium, I would have gotten a criminal record and my career would have been over. Is it right for this boy to be arrested? I can't help but feel bad as he is one of the smarter students in the school but now he will have a criminal record, won't be able to work in education ever again, and his life will be permanently impacted by something he did at 14 years old. Surely this will make him very bitter and won't help him at all. Other people in the school think he deserves it, he was told off for messing with the computers and didn't stop, and if he is allowed to work at a school in the future, with IT admin access, perhaps he might access girls data that he shouldn't access. I however think that people can change massively, even from age 14 to age 24. Is having a criminal record going to help him at all?
