I liked this video and I would love to see more following this theme and maybe even put them in a playlist if there are several more examples. I dislike how lots of people assume that someone being shorter in height and/or lighter in weight automatically determines who will win or who's more likely to win. There are several more factors on what can narrow the chances of an opponent winning in a fight yet people focus too much on those two factors only. I know there are exceptions proving the "short = loser" assumption wrong and this video is a good example of shorter opponents still having likely chances of winning. It would be nice to see more videos and examples including well-known fighters, fighters actually renowned for their skills so it's not just empty hype (that's how people felt about Ronda Rousey later on), fighters with really noticeable height differences (imagine one opponent being nearly a foot taller than the short opponent or even taller than that), opponents that are large even without high body fat percentage, both opponents being highly skilled and renowned for those skills so there's no fight where it's a "short opponent only won because the large opponent lacks martial arts skill and experience" kind of situation, and powerful fighters that are really short (think 5'0+ or 5'2/5'3+) and/or light in weight so it's not a fighter that's "short for heavyweight" or similar for's. It'd also be cool to see one where both opponents are highly skilled and the short one wins the fight with the tall one being severely damaged and injured from the fight more than the short one is or maybe the short one being unscathed.

Royce is one of my heroes. I was in a 2nd hand book store recently, and there was a hardback coffee-table book up on a high shelf (needing a ladder to get to it). It was about Royce and his family, with lots of photos. I asked the price, expecting it to be 4 to $8, and was unpleasantly surprised to learn the manager was asking $65 for it! It was a collectible item, only a few years old.

Mine too bro. The only negative I have to say about the Gracie's is they are ass holes for the most part. I know that's harsh but I have experience with the family. I am a Judo black belt and im also 60 years old. I'm to old for Judo anymore. It's just too much for an old mans body so I thought I would try JJ because it looks easier. Well, it's not but I had to learn that for myself. In dealing with the Gracie's they are SOOO into proving Gracie JJ is so much better than anything else that they will setup unfair matches. As a novice at JJ I was at a seminar with Crosley Gracie and while he was a nice guy he had one of his brown belts take me on, one on one in front of his class. He did it because he knew I was a BB in judo. Well, he had me start the match on top of the brown belt but the brown belt had his hands on my shoulders and his feet in the crevasse of my legs. Very unfair... It took him over a minute but he tapped me. He had us do another quick match that was ALSO unfair in which the JJ guy subbed me again. Crosley had his girlfriend video tape the matches which was also stupid, IMO. They attempt to make Gracie JJ look like no one has a chance against it. I'm not saying I would have beat the brown belt but Crosley made sure I had no chance. Joke... I took up JJ under a different teacher and loved it. As a black belt in Judo I would say I was on par with MOST blue belts from the start. Not all, there were a few that could tap me but only a few. After 6 months, I could beat ALL the blue belts and a few of the brown belts. NOBODY wanted to play against me from a standing position. Not even the teacher. The teacher never did take me on but that's fine. I really like JJ and I wish I would have learned it earlier in my life...

I think is was determined that once a fighter goes over about 210 pounds, any weight advantage after that, becomes negligible. This from a boxing perspective. In 1919 Jack Dempsey fought Jess Willard.Dempsey at about 190 and Willard at 270 and 6 foot 6 inches. Dempsey destroyed him in two rounds. Dempsey was about 6 ft 1inches tall.

So, this is sport fighting with rules, and still much smaller fighters with the appropriate training and requisite skills can take down anybody no matter what their size. No matter how big or tall and especially if it is no rules self defense, we all have vulnerable points, and limbs, and joints that can be locked, torn, broken or struck. Even getting ahold of a finger or two, or a toe and locking it to the point of extreme pain or fracture can bring about a rapid submission. Eyes can be can be gouged, a wind pipe can be struck or grabbed and broken, ears can be clapped, genitals can be nearly ripped off. We are talking life or death self defense here but it is important to keep in mind that if you are a smaller person and a bigger person attacks you (which is the usual scenario) you are NOT automatically a goner
@MrTVx99
@MrTVx99 Жыл бұрын
They can't take down "anybody". There is a massive skill gap in most cases and in other cases, a fighter has to follow the rules of a sport they are not trained in. You know what I would do if I had massive size advantage on my opponent? Take him down with a wrestle and just stay on top of him forever. Don't need to try BJJ, just your weight alone will make them struggle. And smash their head against the floor over and over. Doesn't really make a good MMA fight though. And you'll find just as many cases, if not more of a bigger opponent taking down a better fighter just because of size advantage so a video like this only proves it's possible to beat a bigger opponent, something we already knew. It's also possible to lose to them as well.

I wouldn't agree with that today, the videos we have seen here are relatively old and we can see that the biggest opponent always seems to be fat/not well trained compaired to the smallest guy. Today fighters are big AND technically on top.They got reflexes, cardio (less than small guy but still), know multiple martial style to be able to fight on the ground and on foot.... Take Francis Ngannou or Cyril Gane for example, they are heavyweight and you better not provoke them on a bar fight, a single hit even with your guard on would project you to the ground and hurt really bad if not knock you out. As for self defense, the smaller you are the more vicious you have to be. Im 1m70 64kg and I would pinch, crush throat, press eyes/balls if I have to be, this is animal mode if my life is in danger. But you better be running if you can, cause I know for sure that I can outsprint any bigger man (that is not a professionnal sprinter ofc ^^') and for longer. This is the law of nature, nothing is fair specially when talking physical capacity
@bruceinoregon8163
@bruceinoregon8163 Жыл бұрын
@@Poof57 Sure I understand your point, but being bigger isn't an automatic ticket to dominance even if you are well trained. Reflexes, speed, and strategy are. If I as a smaller person can get to his vulnerable points faster than he can get to mine, then I dominate. Generally speaking, larger means slower and less agile, thats why on a football field the smaller more agile players run around while the larger slower players push and pull each other around, in general

I remember Bob Sapp vs. Mirko Filipovic Crocop. Mirko finished Sapp in no time... I guess the most of those big guys look rather intimidating, so their opponents lose their confidence. Also, because they often win because of that, big guys are not so sturdy and used to withstand beating, so when some coldblooded fighter hits them seriously they lose their confidence. Besides, they are mostly clumsy compared to normal size fighters. And Sapp came from wrestling, and I want to lose any time commenting this rediculous thing...

The easiest way for a significantly smaller fighter to win is to gas out the giant by running, knowing this why do giants chase? Just stand In the corner reducing the ring size or possible angles and when the smaller guy comes in grab him...
@RyanKaufman
@RyanKaufman Жыл бұрын
You can see why with the Butterbean fight. The little guy is too far to be grabbed but is still agile enough to land more solid shots than Butterbean can, so if he stands still he'll lose by points. So after a few strikes he loses his patience and runs at the guy to try and get a good hit or to grab. But as you can see there too, the agility of smaller size comes in handy.

Royce didn't get an armbar there btw, it was a weird spot for sure so I could see how someone might think it's an armbar, but it's actually somewhere between a kimura and an omoplata (officially credited as an omoplata but it's definitely not a classic omoplata). The difference being that the tap was caused because of torque to the shoulder rather than hyper-extending the elbow. PS. Royce isn't the Father of BJJ, his father Helio is.

If you accidentally ran in to a fist of Eric Esch it was game over. But he wasn't a pure athlete by all means. His advantage was his power combined with his above average wide shoulders which gave him immense reach.

Pluss he could just take a beating. People don't notice that Bean really couldn't move well, and he would take a serious beating until he knocked his opponent out.

Lol, he's slimmer than ever and actually taking care of himself a bit better these days. I don't think he's even retired yet, let alone dead.

Ah ... no, that is what makes these events so exciting. If the smaller opponent does not play to their strengths and the opponents weaknesses , then they get to stare up at a bright light in a sterile white ceiling for a very ling time. Hopefully attended 24/7 by earthly angels.
