W.T.F. Taekwondo blackbelt Micah 'KWONKICKER' Brock shares 5 back kick mistakes that are common when throwing this spinning attack, including:
1. Spinning/over-rotating (this is a linear strike)
2. Stepping across with the lead foot (instead of stepping towards the target)
3. Not following through/stopping at impact (extend your leg through the target for maximum damage)
4. Keeping the support leg stationary (you should slide your grounded foot towards the target)
5. Striking with the ball of the foot (you must strike with the heel for maximum impact)

Side step is also powerful with the Joe Rogan kick -ushiro yoko geri/ dweet yop chagui- if you feint first with a low kick from opposite leg.

I did WT sparring way back (before e hogus) and they never taught us to use the back kick for straight-up offense. As noted, the sideways stance is a good deterrent against this. It was instead, taught as a counter attack. When your opponent throws a roundhouse (specially to the body, as is common in WT matches), they move their trunk forward, opening up a chance to nail them with this straight at the solar plexus.
@-WiseGuy-

This is a good point. The 'turning' back kick should only be used defensively or as a follow-up technique in combinations.
@magnum567134
@magnum567134 5 жыл бұрын
Also, when I'm using it defensively, I personally like the jumping version. That way, if I'm late on the draw, instead of getting jammed up and being pushed over, I can push off the opponent and land back in my stance
@rockerguy9683
@rockerguy9683 5 жыл бұрын
True. The spinning back kick, or dwit chagi, should never be used in offense as the lead kick. The same follows with and spinning kick, except maybe the helicopter kick/killer/360 roundhouse (whichever way you prefer to call it), since missing it or having it blocked can and most often will leave you open for a counter.
@anthonyprevost3968
@anthonyprevost3968 4 жыл бұрын
@@rockerguy9683 I prefer the side kick counter to a roundhouse rather than a back kick. Yeah the back kick has power but it has the potential to glance off the opponent due to the turning motion of the roundhouse so you have to know exactly were to throw it, while with the front leg side kick your able to maintain constant visual of your opponent so you can adjust your aim. Also the front leg side kick beats them to the punch due to it being a direct bee line to the opponent

@@al.ss11 the reason you're saying that is because you're never done it lol clearly. you do realize you're calling a pro muay thai fighter dumb right? Nick Salvatore is right also. when mma, kickboxing or muay thai gym is packed with 40 people instructor cant come to each and every one of them and keep repeating what they're doing wrong. when so many guys train on one mat there is always the same advice an instructor gives you and thats "keep your hands up". there is not really anything else they'll stop by to tell you unless to tell you that you're going too hard. unless you have a personal trainer chances are you'll make a lot of mistakes with literally every technique even with something as simple as a jab.

What I find tremendously interesting, is that a lot of people with amazing spinning back kicks seem to do/teach them very differently. Knee pointing down vs knee up by the hip. I think that all of them are right to some degree and that, with any technique really, they're variations that are useful in different scenarios. It's helpful to understand the logic behind those variations.

This guy is spot on, I don't why people nowadays even call back kicks "spinning". Being brought up through Taekwondo myself with the philosophy of turning on the ball of your foot rather than "spnning", (should be most cases with Taekwondo practitioners)as the back kick originated from Japanese/Korean martial arts(correct me if I'm wrong), while this "spinning back kick" is some term generated by the MMA and UFC base.

Lovely, best tip was well worth waiting for at 08:35. Keep the knee pointing down. As an observation; one of the main tips you've shown went unmentioned but you automatically did it nearly everytime you initiated the kick---use your left jab or hook first to set up the kick. As others have mentioned, a little demo, full blast on the heavy bag would have been good, especially since you had Shane to 'spot' the bag for you.

Joe's back kick has more mass behind it because of the chambering of the knee, but this style of back kick has more acceleration. Force = mass * acceleration. Depends on what you are looking for. Though, granted, Joe got so good at this particular style, that the acceleration ended up being very high in addition to a higher amount of mass behind it.

Very good pointing out the difference between a spinning side kick (generally used for forms) and a proper back kick (used for sparring). Also, it's nice that Kwonkicker points out the paint-the-line analogy. It helps to practice just that painting move ending in a deep step backward with your rear to the opponent. As you may have guessed, this position compromises the kicker against grapplers going for the back, but as in anything, it's a calculated risk with potentially big payoff in the form of a KO more painful/demoralizing than a headshot.
@Elurin
@Elurin 4 жыл бұрын
Umm . . .NO! a turning side kick is much better for sparring, you have more control and far easier to sight your target before extending the kick. And NO again! He did not show any proper spinning side kick. IF you throw a spinning back kick in tkd competition it is very likely your opponent will jam the kick and you could get a penality for showing your back to your opponent. It has happened to me when trying to throw a reverse side kick when I was too tired.

Your foot is crushing and causing too much tibial stress. Do a tibial raise and look at how far your foot can go upwards. When you hit the bag full force and don't hit directly on the heel you will bend your foot beyond it's farthest natural limit and it will hurt due to hyperextension. Speaking from experience!

PS the 'little slide' is actually called 'unweighting', which is a skiing term allowing you to turn or edge the ski. Here, you're allowing the body to slide forward and close the 'gap'.

Now learn jumping back kick. Instead of knee down, its knee to chest. Imagen jumping and spinning 180 degree with your knees on your chest. Then through the kick. Crazy power on that one

Great tips! I especially appreciate the point about it not being a spinning technique-I made a video about that very thing a couple of weeks ago. :)

i love doing a low jump knee into the back of any sort of back kick . hitting the crack or spine is such a good feeling and hurts them so much they quit.

Should have also clarified there's a difference between a back kick and a spinning side kick, which a lot of people see them as the same

YES! and it Bugs the Hell out of me!!!! People started calling the reverse or turning side kick a spinning back kick because a proper turning side kick is harder to do and people would do it sloppy so it kind of looked like a back kick.

@@Elurin I'm not sure the origins of how it happened but what you said makes complete sense. A spinning side kick is harder than a back kick! I just figured people didn't understand the difference between the two and called them the same thing lol

@@thomasstunts Well, it made sense for me, because I learned how to do a back kick and turning back kick just from reading Hidetaka Nishiyama karate book (Excellent Book, btw) The side kick, a different story entirely. Being an awkward and relatively nonathletic eighteen year old in the early 90s, I spent many many hours forcing my hips to do the Side Kick when I started serious tkd training. That was toughest part from White belt to yellow. It was hard and painful, but I did it.
