II just finished watching the Figma Config 2024 updates, and even though I'm a bit late to the party, I wanted to share my initial thoughts. The new updates are incredibly thoughtful and significantly more useful in the real design world compared to the previous updates. Here are my cents on some key updates:
🔧 Dev Mode Improvements: These updates are super useful, especially the ability to view single screens separately (reminiscent of Zeplin) and spec design system components.
🤖 AI Integrations: The AI features showcased are impressive! From finding files through screenshots to renaming layers and replacing dummy content, these will save us a ton of time. The ability to use different languages in the UI is a great step towards exploring the vernacular spectrum in India.
🔄 Auto Layout Suggestions: This will encourage more designers to adopt auto layout, making designs more consistent and adaptable.
👨💻 AI-Powered UI Builder: While I'm not a big fan of AI taking over design, it's inevitable. This feature will be a great head start for projects where you feel clueless about where to begin, solving the blank canvas problem.
🖼️ AI Image Fill: This will save us a lot of time finding the perfect images, making designs look more realistic with generative relatable images, even if they turn out funny sometimes.
🆕 New UI: Every new UI brings mixed feelings, but I personally liked this refresh. It’s exciting to use a tool I've been consistently using for the past 5-6 years in a different avatar.
📱 Responsive Preview: Finally, I'll start using wrappers, min-max width more often in projects. This will encourage us to be more thoughtful while creating responsive designs.
📑 AI Prototyping: If this works as well as it looked on stage, it will revolutionize feedback sessions on prototypes versus static design screens, helping us identify problems early and not miss states.
I know I haven’t covered everything, like slides, but these are just my initial thoughts. Change always challenges us to try new things. I remember procrastinating the shift from Photoshop to Sketch back in 2014-15, but once I embraced the change, I got better.
