$300 a seat for dev mode. It's pretty pricey!
@rafaelrabl9 ай бұрын
Great overview of Dev Mode, thank you Jesse! It's a powerful addition to Figma but quite high price (like 300$ per year for a dev seat). Not an issue for large companies but small businesses/studios will struggle.

I work for a large corporation and, trust me, it’s an issue for us as well. When you have a design team of 5+ and dev teams of well over 20, those prices become big issues when it comes to budgeting. But there’s creative ways around things.
@nilpo9 ай бұрын
@@markp7389 The savings in time pays for itself. Across a larger dev team, the savings is multiplied. Obviously this will vary some with each group's workflow, but it should have a pretty dramatic impact on most people's productivity.

$300/yr is essentially one work day of salary for an average frontend dev. Communication issues between design and dev can easily cost you more than a day per dev. I’ll complain all day about how SSO is locked behind $45/mo/seat, but this doesn’t seem crazy for the provided features.

Thanks ! well made and informative. I found that Marking 'ready for development' isn't the most instinctive. I marked 3 frames as ready but the next day I want to mark more of them it doesn't work. I can create a section in dev mode and then mark it ready but I dont know why the previous functionality went away.

Figmas dev mode is utilizing dark patterns to capitalize on corporate greed when they know they don't really have that much competition. Invision is dead, XD is in limbo, Sketch shot themselves in the foot by being mac only. So Figma thinks it's completely ok double dipping on pricing. It doesn't matter if both ends users already have a paid account. No, figma wants you to pay for an extra fee for two people who are not in the same account to talk to each other.

Great point! I do agree that something interesting will likely occur once the monopoly commission wakes up, only to realize a few years later that the market is dominated by one enormous company with comprehensive design capabilities, bolstered by recent acquisitions and some sort of design-to-code tool. However, I disagree with the notion that dev mode is expensive; I believe it's priced fairly. But, we'll see what happens in a few years. Nothing is actually stopping them from increasing the price...

We are in the unfortunate position of needing to migrate from XD.. Figma seems good.. but dev mode pricing is a joke... and Pixso seems like a bit of a rough alternative.. but an option.. just that they don't support adobe fonts like Figma does so that's a big issue. They only support fonts that are downloaded to your machine.. not adobe CC fonts.. I have reached out to support and they have been useless.. doesn't bode well!

Has anyone used dev mode to replace the spec documentation process? That seems to be the only way to justify the price
@vadim_sharapov8 ай бұрын
That is actually a very interesting question. On one hand, in my opinion, replacing specs with dev mode requires designers to either understand frontend development or have access to a sufficient existing design system that can be linked. On the other hand, most designers may not possess enough knowledge to fully utilize dev mode beyond appreciating visually appealing aspects like padding, which leads them to still rely on specs. Based on my experience, investing in dev mode for developers might be more beneficial than assigning the task to a designer. At the end of the day, designers will prepare the specifications, and developers will refer to Figma, often ending up consulting the designer directly or through platforms like Slack. :) So, for now, dev mode is something nice to have.
@missmuffinification8 ай бұрын
@@vadim_sharapov Can you share what understanding designers would need to have of frontend dev to make dev mode work? You make it sound like they should have some understanding that's different/more than what they already need to complete spec documentation.
