I did the challenge where you go to a place with a lot of people and try to draw them with gesture drawings. As they were moving all the time it was really hard, but in one hour I filled up 4 pages of my sketchbook, by the end I could see the improvement right away in certain pieces of the body, how your brain keeps getting these hints and incorporating in the figures, its a great exercise, tks for the tip!

It depends on what you define your gesture as ….. gesture is rhythm , rhythm in the form of dynamic stick figure or forms . Because of this stereotype process that made it difficult for me to move from those stick to a complete figure ( understanding the concept is more important that how you approach your gesture drawing)

I hate being a perfectionist! I spent over 30 mins with just one pose gah! Glad I came to this video to know I didn't have to do it exactly perfect. I will see how the next one goes. Thanks for the video!
@WarrenLouw7 жыл бұрын
The key is repetition. do the same drawing/study of the one gesture 10-15 times. Take your time with the first few and then test yourself by doing it faster and at times without the reference. Repetition is how the brain learns. If you do one drawing of a gesture and move on to the next to the next, etc. you wont really learn much at all coz you never really studied any of them properly. Repetition! Youll see after a few that youll get noticeably better and better and things will actually register.

Well I'm learning, but if you repeat the pose over and over, you can get faster. With this, you can also develop style as you make your own adjustment.

@@WarrenLouw Since this comment, I think what you said is exactly what I did and I improved a bit. Definitely a big help! I think I just had to keep doing it. It is really weird how the brain starts to connect. It is so gradual that you don't know you are connecting the dots.

@@chichi5985 I only draw when i'm bored, and that is like every 2 weeks or something like that, and I rarely draw with references. Some instructors stress economy and efficiency of line, castigating students for "scratchy", "hairy" or "timid" lines and figures, while other see this method as loose and free, expressing motion and finding a best line. Practice both, to widen your technique and to prepare for instructors' idiosyncrasies.
@scp-682-cu64 жыл бұрын
Yeah... I was confused because what I've been learning is to use as few lines as possible to express the figure, and bold, smooth, longer strokes. I understand now that it's based more on the individual artist's preferences ans interpretation. However, I still feel lost as to what I'm supposed to do-

I think you should do some practice and give it a try. For years and i mean YEARS I've completely ignored gesture, anatomy and whatever art teachers had to tell me... while I wasn't bad at all at drawing I recently started learning both of these things and putting them in practice. My random poses don't look as stiff anymore and I'm able to sketch faster and faster. The next thing I want to learn is perspective. The best tip I should have listened too when I was younger is learn how to draw real anatomy first THEN break the rules and do cartoons/anime. If I could go back 15 years I would tell my teenage self to listen to all that. :p

@@anxiety5413 I too am starting to draw and I watch the videos of the channel "Proko". Personally, I started with his playlist named : "Figure Drawing - How to draw people | Proko". After finishing that, I will (normally) go to his playlist named : "Anatomy of the Human Body for Artists | Proko". When I finish this playlist, I'll see what I do next. I started with the Figure Drawing playlist because, at the beginning, I had started by watching the Anatomy one, but in one of the videos of this playlist, Proko (the author of the channel) had said that you had to know Figure Drawing before watching the video in question (or something like that). So I started with the playlist on the Figure Drawing. If you want to learn how to draw, I advise you to start with his *video* named : 1) "How to Hold & Control Your Pencil" Then by the *playlist* : 2) "Figure Drawing - How to draw people | Proko" 3)"Anatomy of the Human Body for Artists | Proko" Etc. If you have trouble with certain exercises in the videos, I advise you to watch videos from other channels to help you with the exercises you have trouble with (this is precisely the reason why I am on the video where we are). If you prefer other channels to learn how to draw, you can watch them, I'm not forcing you to watch Proko. The reason why I recommend this channel to you is that it is very complete compared to others, and because the author of the channel seems to teach drawing well. If you have any questions or anything, don't hesitate to ask me.
