Since their silver medal in 2018, I say to myself four years from now at home Olympics, they will turned silver into gold, despite feeling pressure competing at home and with the Russian pairs nipping at their heels, they delivered when the home crowd needed from them the most.

What a beautiful performance by all pair skaters. No doubt the Chinese pair, Sui under rotated from the spin and got less scores, but made up the scores from other techniques. Undertand they were the only pairs who could do the quadruple twist, which no other pair had done since the 2018 Olympics. Well done Sui and Han, I see so much emotions and passions in your performance!!

True! Sui and Han deserved the gold, their marks were reduced accordingly for the small mistake, but for their difficulty of technique and amazing artistic performance, they managed to glide past the others and win by less than a point! Bravo!

@@НатальяМолчан-з3з Tarasova and Morozov although they skated beautifully do not connect with audiences. Furthermore if you pay attention to Evgenias landing on the first jump there was hesitation. The Chinese had a higher base value for the twist , and high GOE for perfect execution. This competition was judged properly and fairly . But it’s always sour grapes with Russians. And hysterically funny to hear Russians claiming corruption. You can’t always rig the results.

So much to admire in this competition but really have to give a shout to Peng and Jin. These two have been in the shadows such a long time. They were teamed up in a very awkward way, with their federation shuffling them with their teammates ostensibly to give one of their most accomplished skaters a stronger partner. And that sorta worked for a bit but certainly didn’t produce the medals a lot of people thought. Meanwhile it felt these two were really being cast aside, even though they actually did match well physically. They were a decent pair but then didn’t even get out of the short program in Pyeongchang, which was shocking. They have never been the featured Chinese pair but they have steadily stuck around, clawed their way back over the past four years. 4th in the world one year, 5th last year. And then here, really the performance of a lifetime to be fifth at the Olympics in their home country. Really impressive . Seeing Shen Xue run into that group hug after the result came up showing Sui/Han had won, that brought tears to my eyes. 🥺😭😍 Ever so close but finally, finally they are Olympic champions.

Watching the last two skates again you can’t help but admire the mental strength of Sui and Han. They heard the score for the Russian pair, they knew the next to none difference after the short. It was the same in Ice Dance, when the French couldn’t afford the slightest error after the results the Russians posted. I also noticed that the slight error on the second triple on the part of Sui appeared worse on the tv coverage live on CBC , probably because of camera angle. But the Quad twist made the difference here. And maybe the connection to the audience. Tarasova and Morozov don’t reach out enough ( matter of style, and taste ) But they skated beautifully and could just as easily have won.

Ice skating has been a means of human transportation for thousands of years, appearing between four thousand and five thousand years ago. Rather than being an activity done for leisure, ice skating was first used to make traveling across the landscape of cold climates areas easier. A fascinating study by Federico Formenti and Alberto E. Minetti calculated that ice skating across a frozen river could save up to ten percent of energy compared to walking. Early ice skates were made from flattened bone, strapped to the bottom of the foot. In the thirteenth century, ice skates began to look a little more like we know them today, with Dutch inventors being the first to introduce steel blades. The steel blades were edged, making the ice skates much more efficient, conserving even more energy than their bone predecessors. The first-ever skating club was opened in Edinburgh in 1742, and the oldest surviving book on figure skating, 'Treatise on Skating', was written in 1772 by Robert Jones. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, it was common to find skaters on the Serpentine River, a recreational lake in Hyde Park. John Felltham, who wrote his 'Picture of London' in 1810, stated "In the time of frost... the Canal in St. James' Park, and the Serpentine River...are covered with skaters". Although it was more common to find men ice skating than women, there is evidence to suggest that women were permitted to ice skate. A newspaper article published in The Morning Post on the 19th of January 1810 stated that "the gentlemen were decidedly excelled by the lady, who cut out the letters O.P with a truly astonishing precision and neatness".
