Well, I ain't no Xena... Nor a Sikh warrior. The chakram or chakkar is a unique weapon from India, a throwing quoit (sharpened metal ring). It is said to have been used with a rather exotic method, by spinning it around one's finger to build up momentum, then releasing it forward.
It can also be thrown like a sharp frisbee, or vertically like other throwing blades, which is a lot easier. This video is not about the historical background but rather the practical aspects of it. How difficult is it to use? How stable is it in flight? Will I cut myself with it? :)

With this weapon in indian mythology , A general target area is the neck. That's why the index finger method is more common as it is closer to the neck level height I think . Also I've seen it being used on a horse back by warriors to make it more easy to access upper body . Generally people prefer calling it chakra , also famous as a trademark weapon for krishna a form of vishu of the holy Trinity in Hindu religion. It's also called sudarshan chakra when used by a god or vishnu chakra in a more coarse way. Fun side note : Chakram is a Sanskrit (ancient Indian language ) pronounciation , in modern Indian culture chakram means someone who has a thing missing in his head (a mad person but not in a bad way , a simple way to make fun of your friend kinda way ) .... Chakra means a circle in many indian languages hindi , sanskrit , gujarati etc .

Going for the neck seems logical, for one it´s hard to protect the neck without immobilizing the head. Also the enemy will, when he sees that flying at him, try to protect his face and turn the head, giving the thrower an opening for attacks with other weapons.

Theory of a guy sitting here: They used a finger because it was much more sharp than yours, and while holding and releasing is possible without cutting yourself, in a fight, while your eyes are on someone else and hands are moving quickly, you would cut yourself, thus putting a finger in is not a huge risk. A small finger in a big loop, where the inside is not sharp is easy to do without looking. 2nd part of my theory: they used their whole bodies to throw, like a football or baseball, the spin of the finger was just to get it rotating, not so much for momentum, in one move you could go from putting it from one hand onto finger of the other, wind up the throw as you gave a spin, and then throw it forward but slightly over head, making sure to swing the momentum of the ring on the outside so as not to cut your neck, and then momentum swinging around the inside (as it is a loop), but now elevated over your head (like a low football throw or a baseball pitch). Thereby your body is safe, and you were able to throw it quickly, utilizing throwing technique as well as the advantage of a loop (as opposed to a discus). 3rd part of my theory: when picking the loop from one hand to the opposing finger, use your thumb to make sure it does not slide past your knuckle, only on the forward motion (that is the part over your head, when the loop is on the inside turn) do you remove your thumb and due to momentum, it won't fall past the knuckle nor will it need your finger to wrap around it, and when releasing, essentially point a straight finger (full hand point, a' la old statues/paintings of generals) at your target as you throw your entire arm forward in the baseball-esque throw. This comes from years of playing bean-bag dodgeball, Chinese style, am extremely loose bag of beads, where momentum of sack is key, as well as rapid fire is used by one player. Try this out with a plastic throwing disk/loop toy, get the hang of technique and let us know if after practice, this logical approach works.

I've read in a weapons history book that a small wooden rod was used to throw these things. Gives you more power and control. Also you're using a backhand to throw parallel to the ground. Throwing forehand, with your hand on top of the curve will give you more power because you can put the force of your torso, arm, and wrist in it simultaneously.

That throw is often times referred to as a 'flick' and, with all do respect, you aren't doing it at all. Pretend you're holding a whip that you just spun over your head. Continue that wide arm motion from your shoulder all the way down to your index finger. Point at the target as it leaves your finger. Upon release, your arm should be dead still without any remaining momentum. I played ultimate frisbee, and the flick is preferred by almost everyone who learns it. It tends to be faster and more accurate than spinning your whole body like a Ferris wheel and releasing once you finally start building up speed. Ideally, every last ounce of energy gets injected into the disk. I know a person (star of the Frisbee team) who can throw a Frisbee fast enough for it to create a buzzing sound as it flies. At full speed, even moderately beefy frisbees explode when they hit a wall. Again, the motion requires an investment in energy from your entire body in the same manor that a whip works. Just like the sound of a whip cracking, you'll know when you got it. Also, don't spin it multiple times on your finger when practicing. It should make almost a full revolution, but no more. Not until you can casually snap it and hit the mark every single time.

The only reason cracking a whip would require your full body would be for a very long whip. So basically it's Indian Shuriken! For those who don't know, a shuriken was used - by both samurai and ninja - as a tool of annoyance and distraction, NOT a killing weapon. There are only maybe 2 or 3 spots on the human body that a shuriken hit stands any chance of being fatal, and those are A) fantastically hard to hit in a lethal way, and B) usually armoured; the eye, throat and in theory the heart - though good luck getting most shuriken to penetrate deep enough to even hit the heart. Shuriken were thrown to distract and annoy the enemy - a ninja star to the cheek or leg or arm would hurt like hell, especially if you weren't expecting it - to allow the thrower to either escape, play mind games with the enemy (many feudal Japanese were superstitious enough that if they felt a sudden pain in their arm and suddenly realized they were bleeding, but had never seen a swordsman strike the blow, they would attribute it to a ghost, which would badly mess with their head) or follow up with a more lethal strike in close quarters.

I've noticed that the exotic nature of many, not all, ancient Eastern weapons (Indian and Japanese mostly but a lot of Southeast Asian too) comes from how they viewed their weapons e.g. the kris is wavy because it was a status symbol regardless of whether or not it actually improved the weapon. There are several Indian weapons like the pata and the chakra that in retrospect don't make any sense. Why throw a wobbly sharpened disc at an enemy that has a buckler/mail (or a tree branch apparently) or use a long stiff blade gauntlet for gymnastic cutting. It all probably comes down to how they viewed weapons in their culture.

A bit similar to Vegetius writing about sling projectiles embedded in flesh, making internet warriors think slings were deadly penetrating weapons of doom. Nevertheless, the chakram is an intriguing piece of steel which I really like. I made myself some crude stuff following similar principles a long time ago, for me the vertical throw was the best method for power and accuracy. The horizontal throw however would be a good choice if there were a bunch of people standing together.

I think the claim they can severe limbs is only half nonsense... I don't think it would actually cut all the way through bone AND muscle tissue like that, it doesn't have enough speed or heft to it to achieve it, but I do think when expertly thrown by someone extremely proficent in the weapon, it could bury itself maybe half-through a bone in your arm or leg, and given the state of medicine at the time I'm sure many people that were hit with these probably had to have amputations after battle to stop the severe bleeding. If you see a group of warriors with dressed, amputated limbs and you see that weird death frisbee thing with all that blood on it, you're going to assume that thing probably just cut clean through on the first hit. There were probably rare exceptions to this, with lucky direct hits to thinner and more fragile areas, like wrists, ankles, and probably the base of the neck from behind, but in general I think these things were just nasty throwing weapons. The real effectiveness I think, however, didn't come from the weapons sharpness or weird shape, but from the fact you had maybe a whole row of guys throwing a ton of these in a volley, all going fast enough and hard enough and with enough accuracy to do some real damage and cause some real fear. An average warrior probably wouldn't be very afraid of one or two of these, even in the hands of an expert, but I can definitely see where facing down an entire barrage of death frisbees thrown by dudes with massive arm muscles would be quite formidable.

I think it's a stretch to make any claims on the efficacy of a weapon when you're literally using a random thing you bought on ebay and not an historical reproduction. I think that it's incredibly likely that the chakram used in medieval times was likely a lot heavier and thicker, which would also explain why the throwing technique relied more on guiding its momentum than powering the throw mainly through body mechanics. Either way, it's not at all wise to make assumptions from someone who's a) not trained to use the weapon in question and b) not using a weapon which is necessarily historical.

I've always associated the chakram with Lord Krishna, who was an avatar of Vishnu, and holds the Sudarshana Chakra. And as I recall, in some depictions, he holds a rod or stick on which the chakram spins. (Did you try that rather than a finger?) Sudarshana Chakra was one of the divine weapons that were capable of destroying the entire universe. So be careful. ; )
@EphemeralTao
@EphemeralTao 3 жыл бұрын
It's the same principle as an atl-atl or sling, extra force produced by extra leverage. The historical versions were likely somewhat larger and heavier, and using a rod of some sort to spin and launch them would add considerable extra leverage and give enough force to break ribs at a distance.

But he then again committed another sin in front of krishna himself by insulting him thus krishna using his chakram to cut the head of shisupala [the guy who committed the sins] for his 101th sin. And it is that that this ancient weapon wields the power to destroy the universe according to the epics. But really a great concept and practical use too from my opinion.

That's assuming that the enemy doesn't react at all and there's nothing protecting the throat. Sure, if you're incredibly good with a throwing knife, you *could* potentially do serious damage with it, but there was a reason throwing knives were never seriously considered a military weapon, usually throwing a knife would be a resort if someone was at range and you needed injury or distraction without having better means immediately available. I'd theoretically state, as I've never held a Chakram, that this is worse than that because its relatively wide, making it easier to block and spot, has a slower moving design that while having a longer distance also makes it much more reactable. Now if the claim some others have made is correct that it was primarily for mounted troops that has some more benefits as a sort of ranged side arm so to say. Still not an immensely effective weapon, but has a suitable use.

Skall - Two points related to disc golfing 1. Check out driving techniques. IIRC, backhand drives move in as straight a line as possible to give you a consistent accurate release. Forehand drives could work off horseback. Hammer throws could work in a more packed environment where you don't have the side-to-side room to wind up. 2. Disc golf baskets are about torso sized, and with a bit of practice, casual golfers can hit those from 5-10 yards with decent consistency. Not exactly equivalent, but still a decent indicator of potential accuracy.

As one of my favorite weapons both to use and make i can confirm that if the weapon is made correctly as well as if you are practiced it can cut clean through multiple bones, branches, young trees... your wall of the garage after already going through a ski rack... The one you seemed to have gotten appears to be made with too little mass and too soft a metal Correctly made versions have a wide enough body that you can grip from the inside or have a safe zone to hold onto The rotational energy is far more important and influential than the forward momentum for the damage it inflicts, it is basically a flying exacto disk, spin to win boys, spin to win As for the melee use versions they are normally the larger sizes (sort of sword+shield in one) or the smallest sizes (punch blades) Your weapon appears to be rather dinged up in its flatness which really messes up the flight Yes, it is hard as heck to properly make one. From my understanding, a chakram is best held, for melee, by cupping the blade on the opposing end that you'd expect, pinched between the thumb and forefingers/palm, in the webbing of your thumb itself. They're also most frequently thrown with a forehand grip (the blade hanging toward the back of your hand and pointed away from the body. When starting the throw, your palm will be facing toward your target). Thus, you can pinch the blade from the outside, via index and thumb, with the index pressed against the innermost part of the blade, running in parallel to it. Using this forehand frisbee throw, you can generate incredible spin and power with the slingshot effect of the finger, without having to worry about your finger/hand getting in the way, as well as being able to generate greater rotational speed using the whole body and an outstretched arm.

You can definitely use the cut from a sheet method to get the shape you want. You just cut it from a sheet as thick as the inside, and grind it to shape. Not recommended with historical metal, but works well with modern homogeneous steels. The inner material isn't really wasted as you can cut smaller diameters ones from it too. You probably would cut it from smallest to largest though.

Akali Nihang warriors from India would use the chakram by spinning it on their finger (or a stick for extra power) because it made the throw unpredictable to their enemies who wouldn't be able to anticipate the release. If this wasn't needed, then a vertical throw would be used to target a closer individual or a horizontal throw can be used to target a group of enemies at a distance. Small chakrams would also be worn on the arm and could be used in close combat while still attached to the arm. This particularly worked with their fighting style (Sanatan Shastar Vidiya) which is a very deceptive and misdirecting fighting art that uses a whole range of weapons. I highly recommend looking into the Vidiya taught by Gurdev Nidar Singh Nihang.

The high school physics version of aerodynamics is very oversimplified and doesn't really reflect reality. Ask yourself how an aerobatic plane can fly straight and level, indefinitely, while inverted. Or why paper aeroplanes can fly at all (their wings are flat and don't have an aerofoil cross-section). Etc. Trying to understand what's really going on is weird and difficult and is why aerospace engineers exist.

@jon_j__
@jon_j__ 4 жыл бұрын
@@gormauslander My (admittedly rudimentary) understanding is that lift is indeed caused by deflection. (Specifically, the fact that air that is coming in from the front is deflected downwards by the shape of the wing. Newton's Third Law => equal and opposite forces => lift.) Another commenter lower down linked an interesting instructional series by NASA: www.grc.nasa.gov/www/k-12/airplane/lift1.html As for paper aeroplanes... well.. at the risk of excessive pedantry, I have two issues with your comment. (1) What, precisely, is the boundary layer? For ice skaters, there is indeed a layer of water that is melted by the pressure of the skater and lubricates the interface between the skate and the ice. I truly have no idea what you're suggesting here. (2) I guess we need to decide what is meant by the word "fly". Obviously, powered flight (birds, aeroplanes and helicopters) is flight. In addition, I would describe all forms of glider (vultures, albatrosses, flying squirrels, frisbees, piloted gliders, etc) as "flight". (Sidenote 1: Powered flight only happened because people stopped trying to copy birds and instead copied gliders, then strapped on an engine.) (Sidenote 2: Lighter-than-air flight (hot air balloons and zeppelins) and pointing your engines at the ground (Harrier jets, rockets) is also flight, but it does not involve aerodynamic lift, so it's irrelevant to this conversation.) I would categorise paper aeroplanes as a kind of glider: they can fly a very long way - very much further than can be explained without aerodynamic lift - but they do not have an onboard power source, so they are limited by their initial velocity (ie. how fast you throw them). So, yeah, I just wrote all that to assert that paper aeroplanes do in fact fly. lol.

2:17 it functions on what's known as Bernoulli's Principle. Since the top side has more surface area but flows through the air at the same speed as the bottom side, it forces the air to travel faster over the same distance. This creates a pressure differential, essentially a suction effect, generating the lift and keeping the thing in the air. Same things happens with wings on aircraft. Your airfoil is just curved.
@JasonPerkinsthingstosee
@JasonPerkinsthingstosee 4 жыл бұрын
i thought Bernoulli's principle was proven incorrect because it relied on the air leaving the back of the foil at the same time which it doesn't and that it was the angle of the air passing over the back of the foil in a plane wing that was providing the lift. From what I see as well, his foil is backwards, much like a spoiler on a car, the air being pushed over the wedge shape would be forced to travel up, thus pushing the blade down.

@@JasonPerkinsthingstosee Bernoulli's principle hasn't been proven incorrect overall. It just doesn't fully account for the lift generated by an airfoil, which in fairness Bernoulli was never trying to do. The equal transit theory is still pretty widely taught where fluid dynamics isn't commonly discussed. NASA has a really good lesson series on it too. www.grc.nasa.gov/www/k-12/airplane/lift1.html This just me spitballing here, but the spoiler cross section you are describing probably doesn't have that much of an effect. Besides being a very small surface area to push down on, that cross sections only occurs on the front facing side and not along the sides of the chakra, which would form a complete airfoil. The interior edge towards the back also sharply tapers toward the back edge and that should turn the flow a little bit like an airfoil and generate some lift that I imagine might overpower the inverse effect at the front of not cancel it out. I don't want to get into how the spinning might play in because I am not a physicist and that much fluid dynamics makes my head hurt a little. This is a really cool idea for some experiments, though.

When using the spinning around the finger method, it will undoubtably have more force, power, and be easier to aim if you spin it counter clockwise; the direction of spin being out laterally and then back inwards toward your torso, rather than clockwise as in out from your torso and then back in laterally. Aviation person here. In simplist terms, the bottom is a straight line, top is curved. The air sticks to the surface (pit the back of a spoon to the stream of a sink) so as it travels across the top, it goes faster due to having to cover more distance. The bottom however, can move at roughly the normal speed. This results in the top having less pressure than the top. The object wants to follow negative, or leaser pressure, so it moves upwards.

You mentioned from the start that there were 2 methods to make one of those; a bar bent into a circle or it cut out from a large sheet. There's a third: "the stretched donut": take a piece of stock (round is ideal) and punch a hole in the middle. Now, take this "donut" and slowly stretch it out around any form of round object you can think (horn, mandrel, etc), keeping it from "getting away from you." Finally, this ring is flattened to the profile, beveled, then ground to shape, removing limps and bumps that came up during the process. Im a blacksmith with adhd, so... puzzles like that are fun to figure out.

The "holy" thing is especially funny because here in India the Chakram is associated with Vishnu (one of the three supreme gods/ Trimurti) who has a Chakram called "Sudarshan Chakra". Kinda like Thor's Mjolnir.

With chakram, the rule is very simple... There no formal training...you just start using it from the childhood (mostly for fun)...and gradually you become a chakram throwing wizard... Just like with playing card throwers or frisbee throwers. I've seen some playing card throwing wizards capable of cutting unbelievable things just with that paper piece...so just think what an iron blade of this shape can do...

When I was a younger teenager, nearly 40 years ago, the toy stores sold these. They were rubber airfoil with a harder plastic, inner ring, for weight. It was called a Skyro and was supposed to be the next step in frisbee evolution. Watch the Forged in Fire episode that featured the Chakram as a finale weapon. The chakram the smiths made were very effective and, I believe, could remove limbs. Also, them must have been effective, or they wouldn't have been used for combat for such a long period of history. I think the reason that the finger throw existed was because small chakram would be worn on the wrist. I can see the wielder just dipping their hand down to let gravity slip one from the wrist on to a hooked finger, then raise the arm up into the finger twirl. Kind of a quick draw.

I used the same thing 20 years ago they where fun i even sometimes threw them spinning them on my index finger and flicking em. They where fun I think the limbs been severed would of been very rare but could happen.

History channel did a video on it with a guy that is a decent of the sikh warriors and that's what it seemed like. The finger spin was a kind quickdraw, while he threw more like you would do in ultimate frisbee to cut straight through some sugar cane.

@@evaahh9584 Sugar cane is actually fairly similar to the way living, "wet", bone reacts to cutting devices. Bones like you see in movies/video games do not act the same as they're usually dead, "dry", bones that are more akin to rock.

When throwing it sideways, the accuracy is less important if what you're aiming at is a formation rather than individual targets, which might prove to be even more effective during battle since most other ranged weapons (slings being a common exception) will telegraph their intended destination far before they're released. If you might throw it anywhere in a 100° arc in front of you, that means that the unfortunate recipient can also expect a chakram to the face from a 100° arc in front of them, thus making it more difficult to shield against compared to ex. arrows. There's also the added benefit of bounciness which somewhat ensures that at least someone in the formation will have a bad day. Could also prove to be a nuisance by catching onto other objects/weapons/feet/etc. as one would probably prefer not to continuously bump into the sharp edge (or be a source of trouble for those around you). Just imagine fiddling to get one off your spear when you're in the second or third row of a formation. I'd assume that a group of skirmishers flanking an enemy formation could cause significant disarray in such a way, and while it may not cause much damage to any one individual, it should certainly assist the main troops in ending them rightly. They're also easy to carry and don't have to be made very well to be effective.

I immediately thought of a way to get the thing off your spear, should it land, ring-toss style, around it. Don't know how effective it would be in formation, as I imagine the guys around you would probably not appreciate it... But if you spin it around right, you can get it to slide right off the top of your spear, just like throwing it with your finger. Accuracy is going to be shit, as it's going to hit the spearhead on the way out, but it's mostly just to clear your own weapon, so as long as you don't hit your buddy, it's all good. Like I said, though, no idea how practical it would be, compared to just spinning the spear around to let the thing just fall off, or even shifting your hands around it.

Used to throw discus (I know not exactly the same) and I can imagine doing a full or half spin really rotating the shoulders/back and core to add more explosive momentum using the finger throw. starting with the ring at the base of your finger and releasing it at the height as you spun around. Honestly from what you've shown with a few hours of practice this weapon has deadly potential surprisingly so.

True WingChun True WingChun It’s not accurate that limbs, clothes, flesh, muscle, tendon and bone do bent and absorb energy in doing so? I’m not going address that bit about “fighter” because your statement made so many assumptions that it’s pointless really and besides my point. I newer said branch and limb is exactly the same. I just pointed that they have similar qualities. Qualities which make them harder to cut. (And by the way, nobody except you mentioned “very ting branches in the end of tree”.) I wanted to point that out because it seems to me that, like in your case, people often do not realise how much limb, and actually whole body, gives in when hit. Are you so sure that limb is comparable to 4 inch d log or 2x4?

Hey skallgrim, idk if you'll see this but if you spin it the other way around your finger you can hook it with your finger on release, the way you do with an over hand throw. Allowing you to conserve the momentum, as it should continue to roll and freely roll off your finger, as well as put more power behind it... I've done it with the plastic toy version and you can get pretty accurate with it as well as quite some distance.
