My late husband worked as a locksmith. I helped him use various systems to open various safes. Some old , some new but all interesting . Thanks for sharing. I enjoy engaging in conversations and the like that bring the memory of my late husband to life. It will make a great conversation of peace in your home.

Yesterday I was at a flee market and I bought an antique Cary Safe ($75.00), Patented September 16, 1890. It was in rough shape, rusty, and the door was open because someone had engaged the lock mechanism - the pistons were extended - therefore, the door would not close. The seller said that no one knows the combination and the door has been open for about 50-70 years. The safe weighs about 400 pounds. I brought it home - got on KZbin and found your video - and using your technique, I had the lock working in about 2 hours. The combination is RT x 4 turns 87, LT X 2.5 turns 26, RT x 1.5 turns 19, LT 58. Thank you so much for posting this video!!!!!! By the way, Before today, I knew absolutely Zero about old safe locks - now I think I could open any antique combination safe lock. Thanks again.

Great video, and your safe is a beauty. I’ve been looking for one about that size, as it’s heavy, but manageable because it’s not too big. Now after watching your technique. I feel as if I can get a good deal on one that hasn’t got the combination. An antique dealer in my neighborhood sold a locked safe very cheap, and the buyer had a locksmith open it. It had over $15,000.00 in gold inside. The dealer still hasn’t gotten over it.

Cool old safe! I have to take the panels off my safes and see if I can change the combination on one to match the other. On a side not, many years ago I had a little job driving a truck from the Mare Island Naval Shipyard to a locksmith in Napa with three safes from the Provost Marshall's Office that were bought at auction. The locksmith was so impressed with getting to work on these high security locks that he had only read about, he didn't even charge us for the combination change. Safe cracking and lock picking are fun hobbies.

Victor Safe & Lock Company started in business in 1885 in Cincinnati, OH. They continued in business until they were acquired by Remington-Rand (Rand Kardex) in 1927 and the facility moved to Marrietta, OH. The name was also changed at the time of the acquistion to the "Victor Safe & Equipment Company". Remington-Rand also had a facility in N. Tonawanda, NY that was making office equipment under the Victor label. In 1956 when Remington-Rand was acquired by the Sperry Corporation. The safe making division was discontinued. Sperry did continue the fire resistive file cabinet and office equipment division, using the Victor logo, until this was finally sold off in 1987. A company named "Turn-10 Wholesale" acquired the logo and trademark at this time. Turn-10 is still manufacturing a small line of equipment using the Victor logo, though they don't actually make the equipment. Fire files are made for them by companies like FireKing International - only they have the Victor logo instead of the FireKing logo. In April of 1895, Victor Safe & Lock Company registered the "VICTOR IN HOC SIGNO VINCIMUS 1885", logo as a "trademark". The trade mark serial number is 700265528. The current status of the trademark is "EXPIRED". This trademark translates as: "In Hoc Signo Vincimus" = "In this sign we conquer".

fun fact: the small lock box inside the safe could be a supervisor safe as this type of safe was used most often in large general stores to lock up till money and the cashiers or manager could have the combination and the owner would be the only one with the key and would store things like the register keys in there, whether that's what it was used for or not is difficult to tell.

Had a safe like this in a customers basement except it was about 3 foot tall. He just bought the 100 year old house and it came with it. He was gonna get a lock smith to open. We were taking down some material on the ceiling and a paper fell down. Combination to the safe in case they forgot. We all got excited as he opened it. EMPTY 😞

Two ways to get into an antique safe. Drill one inch to the right of handle (if there is one) at 3 o'clock and punch the boltwork out. This renders it unusable afterwards. - If its a gravity lever drill into dialring at 7 o'clock at an upward angle of about 30%. Scope and line up the gates until the lever drops in. - If it's a drop in lever like the safe in the video drill straight into the dial ring at 11 o'clock and scope the wheel pack, lining up the gates under the fence. A good dril with 6mm carbide bits and a 5.5 mm 2 way scope like the Teslong is all you need. The antique safes were invented before powertools and have no hardplate and relocker(s). Happy drilling 🙂

That safe is awesome!! It's really very cool that you saved this. :) The little bit of rust can be removed with a little hydrochloric acid. I know that's might sound heavy-handed, but the acid eats away just the rust and leaves the metal intact. A little bit of pint where the rust was, and then finish with polish. It'll look awesome! :)

The asbestos was not just added to the concrete to make it stronger or more durable, it's main quality is its high resistance to heat and helped a safe's contents survive a fire.

Great video. Remember that painting any of that will kill its antique value but if you want an easy and effective way to seal the concrete, just mix some Elmer's white glue and water and to make a super runny glue solution and paint it on or use a spray bottle.

Gypsum is what makes safes fire resistant. There are different ratings and just like the sheetrock on your walls which is gypsum there are water crystals all inside the mineral and this acts as a vapor barrier and as long as that vapor barrier exists fire will be staved off. The thicker the gypsum the longer the vapor barrier will last while being burned.

I thi k the bottom was originally sealed. I was taught to enter a locked safe from the bottom. Cut bottom open in a "H" pattern, knock the vermiculite out and you will find a second metal piece that you cut in a second "H" pattern opposite of the first. Knock wooden floor out and you are in the safe. Safe can be repaired and reused without any damage being evident. I have a large collection of old safes. It took me less than 5 minutes to get inside the safe.

To get the door to close correctly, you need to put 1 or 2 shim washers between the door hinges. You must lift door off, to do this. The gap on top of door shows the door has probably been off , and shims lost

very cool video i’m almost 60 years old and since i was a kid i was fascinated with old television and Movies that showed people listening to a safe with their ears up to it now that i’m getting older i just like the Nostagia a of the Antique Safes but i am very curious on how to know if a old one is a good secure way to store valueble o is it better to go with a Modern Constructed one ? At the Moment i have Plans on building my next home and i am leaning towards Concreting one into theStructure for Valueables and Firearms my one concern is being in a very Rural Area and still having fast Access to a Firearm for Security and dangerous Wild Animals to0rotect my Animalscand family members from being harmed

So basically: 1. You listen for the ccw slowly moving for 3rd in the back gear for gap. Write down number. 2. Go the other way 1 complete full turn. Listen for the catch. The second sprocket is now moving. Listen for the gap. Leave it parked underneath the bolt. Write down the number. 3. Last one move the opposite way again listen for the bolt to drop. Write down the number. 4. Spin it backwards again and you have the combo with an opening safe!

Old safes can be hit and miss with fire resistance, not all antique safes are created equal. I would definitely take the lock, dial and bolt work off the door and give them a thorough cleaning and lubrication. That's the easiest thing you can do to enjoy your safe for many years to come. You can also get that thing fully restored. 😁👍

I have an almost identical safe that was my grandparents. It's a Victor safe but it doesn't have the "F. P. Morse" logo on top. It's absolute rubbish as far as being able to determine the combination. If you get the first number right you can hear a loud "click" when you hit the second number, and when you hit the 3rd number, just like with your safe, there's another loud "click" and the dial stops turning. You then turn it a bit in the opposite direction to withdraw the bolts. But it makes a nice decoration and there's the family connection.
