An Asia Development bank report indicated that at independence in 1970 Fiji had the same GDP (national output) as Singapore. However, by 2000 after the Speight coup Singapore's GDP was 25 times bigger. Today that number is over fifty times. Singapore is almost the same size as Taveuni, the island mentioned in this story. Fijian's demand that only iTaukei should lead the country, whether the country progresses or not is irrelevant. This was also the thinking around Fiji's rugby team. Only iTaukei could coach the sevens team, and they lost more tournaments then they won in spite of their obvious raw talent. A change in leadership appointed Ben Ryan, an Englishman to coach and Fiji won Olympic Gold. There was widespread celebration. I wonder where are the folks who insisted only iTaukei should coach Fiji are now? Why cant we just let the best (whoever it is) lead. When they succeed, everybody benefits! Unfortunately many Fijians are captured (vesu mona) by fear, that their land will be taken away, that they will be 'slaves' in their own land. The same old narratives that certain politicians continually play. Strangely though, many claim to be christians and declare "I can do all things through Christ..." but at the same time live in fear. Either the God they profess is impotent or their faith superficial. I think it the latter.
@squidjames77352 жыл бұрын
No doubt Fiji would be on par with, or better than Sg today if the leaders played their part … Bavadra had that dream in ‘87, and it could have been so prosperous today. Today, even the natives go overseas to do better for their children.

GOD BLESS FIJI 🙏🏽 🙏🏽🙏🏽 for we certainly need some higher power guidance thru the politically turbulent bumps in the very potholed road ahead. The 'va sasamaki' should be put thru the old political guard with last century grudges and ideas. Potential young leaders like some of the female politicians - Ms Tanya Tabuya, Ms Lenora Qereqeretabua, Ms Waqanika, are very Jacinta Ahdern "esk" who are very capable and have more relevance. Tanya especially has more lived experiences from her very humble beginnings in a squatter settlement to a law degree and running a large family household. Being a kai Vanua Levu myself, I totally agree with one of the mothers in the begining stating the better community relationships compared to Viti Levu. For example, as someone who speaks a little hindi, it would be common to find in some parts, i taukei, indo fijians and others speaking to each other in fluent fiji hindi. Whereas in other parts of Vanua Levu they would be speaking to each other in the perfect i taukei dialect of that province, so much so that the indo fijians use the i taukei dialect in half of their spoken words amongst themselves. Being the perennial optimist, i still have great hope for Fiji, so long as we look towards Aust, NZ, maybe the US and the Euro Union for development, foreign aid, security, guidance etc. They have been amongst other things, our traditional reliable market for tourism and will remain so for the foreseeable future ! Fiji belongs Fijians!..You ask a Fijian where he is from, he will state the name of his province (Ba, Bua, Cakaudrove, Kadavu, Lau, Lomaiviti, Macuata, Namosi, Nadroga/Navosa, Naitasiri, Ra, Rewa, Serua, Tailevu), and not (Labasa, Suva, Nausori, Nadi Lautoka) those are the name of towns and are not villages...that makes Fijians different from Indo-fijians....we belong to our different tribes, they (indo-fijian), dont have tribes. But in the end, we live in the same island, use the same supermarkets and even attend the same church (for some). So, a message to all foreigners who are so obsessed about how we live our daily lives, why dont you mind your own business and let the God of Fijians decides what is best for its people.

Didn't she love the child when she believed it was hers ?? Now that she realized it's not her child so she doesn't love him anymore ? Her love for the child was fake ??
