I’m proud of the achievements of my IndoFijian friends in helping to mould and shape this nation of Fiji. May God truly bless them and the itaukei community to bring peace, tolerance and goodwill to one and all for a common goal.

Namaste, thank you of sharing your story, this brought back so much memories. I was born in Guyana and my great grand parents came from India. Our culture, religion, food and surroundings are identical to your. For a moment, I thought this was film in a village and on the sugar estate of Guyana.

@Pashtun Boy True. In Fiji, a lot of the elderly Indian farmers were polytheist. Whilst Hindu or Muslim, they also used to give thanks to the Fijian Gods for their good crop. I remember my grandmother used to do yaqona ceremonies sometimes. I don't know if the younger generations believe and follow the same though.

I am a Fijian Hindu and my family originates from Faizabad (Ayodhya) area in Eastern UP. The language spoken by Fiji Indians, Fiji Hindi, is actually a dialect of Awadhi with considerable Bhojpuri influence. It is a mix of many similar dialects.

After the British left Fiji, these hardworking Indians were the ones who propped up and maintained Fijis economy through farming and businesses. Their descendants continue to do that today. Huge respect and a big thank you to all Indo Fijians.

The first Girmit into Fiji were from the Solomons, Vanuatu and Kiribas. These people were brought by the German copra, sugar & cotton producers some 100 years before the Indians were brought over by the colonist British government. Fiji. These Melanesians were the first to work in the sugar plantations. White settlers started arriving in Fiji as early as 1672 where 250 years later the British colonised the country. Indian indentured system lasted only 30 years under the British. Maybe the old man is ignorant about Fijian history calling them lazy..be careful what you say and count yourself lucky Fijians are very tolerant.
