I discovered your channel earlier this week. I love ska, but thought, I also love a good midwest emo cover. The algorithm gods have answered. Also, as a HS band director, seeing your bluecoats jacket in the video felt awesome. Good to know kids are going out there and making cool stuff with those skills. Looking forward to the next one.

I watched a concert for a band called Anathallo, they were sort of midwest emo with horns, and I really enjoyed that sound, but they aren't very well known, and maybe not producing anymore, but I really wish more groups would use that sound.
@jakethasteak14 сағат бұрын
Anathallo is sick, but unfortunately defunct. One guy went on to be in the band FUN.

As a former emo kid from the Midwest, what does Midwest emo mean?
@Bartholomule0120 сағат бұрын
It's the style of Emo music maybe most well known by the band American Football. Listen to their debut and that is what it sounds like.
@SkaTuneNetwork20 сағат бұрын
Midwest emo is the subgenre of emo based around emo bands from the 90s that pioneered a specific sound of emo. Ex: American Football, the Get Up Kids, Cap n Jazz to name a few. At the time, emo was primarily focused on the East coast, and rooted way more into hardcore-punk, but these bands in the Midwest had a way more indie-rooted sound. The guitar “twinkled” more with notey riffs, def using lots of chord extensions like 7, 9, 11, chords beyond the basic power chord or major and minor that gives it a distinct, melancholic sound. But yeah, the genre was coined by those bands. It was distinct enough where for the decades following you hand bands definitely not from the Midwest so inspired by these bands, they sounded like they were from the Midwest, hence Midwest emo. Ex: snowing and Algernon cadwallader from Pennsylvania, free throw from Nashville, mom jeans from California, the list keeps going lol All this pre-dates when the term emo was used to describe the 2000s mall pop punk stuff like Blink, my chem, etc. which that became its own vein of emo for sure thanks to bands like the get up kids who played Midwest emo but also leaned a little into pop punk and inspired many bands of that generation.
