So.. in 15 minutes you just covered exactly what I've been trying to figure out for a few days.. one piece at a time. Here it's all straight and to the point. Thank you!

Hey FileMaker Freak, you are a great teacher! A few suggestions for viewers: 1) don’t use serial numbers for ID fields 2) don’t refresh the whole window as it causes a whole redraw of window- just name the portal and then refresh the portal by name 3) the self relationship created is the same as the new master-detail feature for portals

I love these shorter videos that you post from time to time. They serve (me) as great little reminders and pointers to things I'd forgotten from the demand distant past. I am a home user and use FMP for personal use! Kkeep up the great work :) Paul

Thank you. I spent like an hour trying to figure out why my portal would filter on 1 field but not 2 or more. Watching this video helped a lot. I was using the "&" instead of " and ". lol. I feel so dumb now. If I didn't see you click on the " and ", I would have probably gone crazy trying to figure out what the problem was. Thanks again.

Most excellent. It was almost ten mins in before we got to the content of the title, but I learnt a bunch of useful things along the way. And then the "thing". Much appreciated. See you on Udemy, now that I know.

Hi Guy, I Love your videos , they helped me immensely. one question on this subject, I created buttons for each of the filters that i want with a set field script, but what if i want to look at all records with no filter, how do i achieve that. buttons = | ALL | QUOTES | APPROVED | COMPLETED | ....How can i create an ALL RECORDS. I Tried OR's but that did not work it just returns a 0 in the field

I would filter by using one field with a drop down list (instead of buttons) and that filtering field should be a calculated global field

One thing missing: how do you clear the filter, if you want to see all entries again?

First of all, thank you for the tutorial. Please tell me if I am wrong. There's a HUGE logic mistake in this program: Filters work when you are on any record (in your case there are four) And when you use the filters on a particular record, you always modify the values for that record because applying the filters actually updates the values for the field. It changes Genre and Mood of a song just by using the filters.....? This makes this solution of filtering not applicable. Also, the tutorial would be complete if you could add the following: 1. When you just open your file/MusicLayout, you see all of the portal items unfiltered. 2. For each filter, it would be nice to have a "Clear filter button" or an empty value which undoes just "that" filter 3. "Clear All Filters" button Anyway, I learned something, but it feels like just a teaser tutorial.

Hi Lex, The object of this lesson was to enter song information and to see only related songs by mood or genre. Itś true that at some point I started changing the mood and genre velues, but that was only as an example. These genre and mood fields are not really supposed to be changed to other values. If you want to be able to change the mood and genre filter fields without changing the values of a certain song, then you need to use separate filter fields for the mood and genre. If you want to show all values you could add a hidden constant field with a certain value like "1" and add that to your filter. This could be a auto-enter data field that always enters the same value in one field. You could then have a checkbox filter field that uses that same value when checked. So checking this field would then match all records on the auto enter field. Greetings Guy

Guy Stevens I missed the point :) Now it makes perfect sense, thanks, Guy! I will play with your suggestions tomorrow. Appreciate it much. I’m new to FM. Trying to develop a projects/tasks management solution to my unique needs.

I tried to get it work with a Global Filter Field (GENRE) and compare it to the genre Field in the portal filter Calculation as you did it. The Portal shows all records without the one one i am on. (because i set the relationship as you did) But the filter itself doesn´t seam to work when comparing it to a global field.

Hey Guy, Here's video suggestons that I think many will find valuavle. 1. Could you record a video on how to filter portal rows without changing the values of a certain song? 2. How to filter a list view with multiple filters. Thanks! Love your channel

Hi Lex, If you want to filter the portal without changing the values you can simply use new fields that are only used for filtering. All the rest of the setup is exactly the same as I have done it in this example. You can set those new fields to global storage to work better in a multi user system. But other than that the entire setup is exactly the same. I always try to show the absolute simplest basics so that people can understand how a technique works. Then it's up to them to expand on that and make it more complicated :) Greetings Guy

Zou je me hierover willen mailen of bellen svp? mmarell@ziggo.nl 06-44162163 Greets, Marcel

Groetjes Guy
