I have been listening to this piece of music for 70 years now, and I believe this is the best version I have ever heard. The depth of expression especially from the strings was superb, and I could not fault anything at all. Sublimely majestic, moving, the pace exactly on point especially with the unhurried Nimrod, with its crescendos never failing to evoke emotion. Well done

I am in total agreement with your comments. I first heard the Enigma Variations when I was about 5 years old in 1946. My father was a church organist and musician who left me with a love of Elgar, Brahms and many other composers . I have watched this particular performance many times and it never fails to move me. a wonderful orchestra and superb performers. Even the filming is excellent and I can almost imagine I am actually sitting in that audience.

God I love these people. Literally waited until no more sound was in the room, and then politely clapped at the end, no yelling or cheering, or jumping to their feet like rowdy victors in a football game. One of the most truly magical moments in any composition. I have the last bars of W.N and first bars of Nimrod tattooed on my forearm...the only color in the whole thing is that single held note that bridges the two.

I'm not a huge Elgar fan but that transition into Variation IX 'Nimrod' has to be one of the most heart breaking passages I have ever heard! It breaks my heart anew every time I hear it and especially played so superbly by this wonderful Orchestra who play it so respectfully and powerfully!

Nothing like a real orchestra who's playing is as sweet as honey. My music teacher in the eighties introduced us to Sir Edward William Elgar and after he played this he told us he was English. I was so proud as I am of this exceptional Orchestra.

I've now listened to this KZbin recording a number of times and feel I must thank you once again. I attended the Proms in London throughout the sixties and early seventies hearing several versions of this (ie Boult!). But, as I come back to this Warsaw recording, time and time again I feel this is the BEST recording I have ever heard. Such finesse, balance, feeling and... soul. The conductor's name is not one I can pronounce :) but I will remember it! Accept once again my thanks for a truly wonderful interpretation of a great piece of British music.

This is the version I return to time and time again for both its musical and video quality. Today, while listening to/watching this performance one more time, I remembered the recent passing of the much beloved Queen Elizabeth II, and the music, especially the "Nimrod" variation, seemed to take on extra layers of meaning, and I was deeply touched, again. If you know someone who has not listened to (or watched) this performance, I highly recommend that you introduce this version to him/her.

I'm at a loss for words to describe the stunning beauty of this performance. The players are all so deep into making this the finest interpretation of the Enigma Variations. I've played this numerous times, and often I'll begin to play it as background music while I'm working, but then find myself viewing it instead, because the filming is so "in tune" with the amazing music and performances. I was a Tympanist in an award winning band in HS. In 1964 to 7, we produced 15 professional classical and Jazz musicians. I know them all. As a time keeper, feeling each pulse of the beat is extra hard. If you add a Parlando or Rubato Parlando to make a phrase speak, as a timekeeper you simply hope you don't have a part or your part is to bring everyone back to the beat. When I watched these musicians waiting as a large group for the last possible moment in the Parlando or Rubato Parlando sections, I knew instantly how good this orchestra is. To value playing as one is to value the emotion above all else. And life is hard. It is hard to be in sync with everyone else on every performance. Why orchestra musicians need a steady gig with a living wage. You can't be unduly stressed out and play like that. I know from the very competent but emotionally thin performances of the constantly disappearing and reappearing Detroit Symphony with one of the greatest halls (Orchestra Hall) and one of the most unreliable donor bases.

Every single string or wind instruments do a amazing job and that's exactly what makes Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra outstanding. I have been to Krakow several times and not once have I missed a Classical concert when I am there! In the Nimrod variation, the section between 18:47 and 18:53 is truly spectacularly done. It's amazing how much emotion can be packed into six seconds of music. I have never heard a better rendition (and i have heard a LOT)

Yes, IMO the Warsaw Philharmonic is possibly the most underrated orchestra in Europe. At their best with the outstanding conducting of Jacek Kaspszyk (who I heard in London conducting an unforgettable "In the South" overture) they yield almost nothing to the more famous philharmonics of Vienna and Berlin.

Astonishing. Breathtakingly. Perfect. How many recordings of this have I in my collection and none... none... compare to this. Sweeping, majestic, haunting and poetic... Phil Bates honestly the silence after Nimrod is blessed. The first time I heard Enigma, I was utterly unprepared for what Nimrod would do to my soul. I would have given anything for those 5 seconds of silence, but the audience was so overwhelmed that they couldn’t withhold applause. And I was ripped out of the most emotionally reflective moment of my entire life.
