I have taken multiple chains to multiple different professional sharpeners and not a one ground these down. I would take a couple chains home and they would cut worse. I took some back and said these don't cut and they would look at me like I grew a 2nd head. I finally learned about these and was so mad I started doing my own chains. I make sure my children are never un-educated like I was.

I have watch a bunch of "how to file your rakers" and never could figured out what they were trying to tell/show me. Yours was simple and to the point and now I am going to file my rakers after this comment :) Thanks

I am proud of you for actually knowing and talking about the difference between a Raker and Depth Gauge. It is silly how other people call the Rakers by different names. Might be the poor education system that doesn't teach that a Gauge is a measuring tool. Good work.

Trying to determine if you’re flexing how much you’ve used that chain or if you’re too cheap to change it out 🤔

Do the rakers have to be filed in different directions, ie you know how there are teeth on the left and right, and you file all the left teeth one direction, then all the right teeth one direction.......So with the rakers , do all rakers have to be filed left & right directions, or can you file just one way?
@chrisc94062 жыл бұрын
File raker in same direction as filing teeth. So file every other raker as teeth alternate and so do the corresponding rakers. Then file from other side. Note the raker is in front of the cutting tooth based on direction of chain travel. Can be accomplishment using a feeler gauge and metal straight edged ruler if you do not possess this measuring gauge tool. The depth gauge setting is 0.026" (26 thou) or 0.65mm for chains with a chain pitch of 1/4 ", 325 ", 3/8 " & 3/8 " P. These are the most comon sizes. Large chain pitch .404 " requires depth gauge 0.031" (31 thou) or 0.80mm Small chain pitch 1/4 " P requires depth gauge 0.018" (18 thou) or 0.45mm All depth gauge sizes as recommended by Stihl.

what are the other holes in that gauge used for?
@joehead12942 жыл бұрын
They have numbers next to them, and you compare the tooth angle on the top plate to the angle you are trying to file. It also should have a bar groove cleaning spur and maybe a 1 inch graduation scale for measuring chain pitch.

Why does it have all the holes on it then?

As a newbie I don't understand what you mean about moon-shaped cuts.
@larrywhited30702 жыл бұрын
The chainsaw begins to veer off to one side rather than curing straight down. As it continues to favor one side it slowly cuts an "arc", hence a quarter-moon shape, like a parenthesis mark: ) or ( The saw often then begins to bind on larger diaper cuts, and switching sides creates 2 different paths for the cut.

Jeez - it's a filing Gauge and not a filing jig. Put a factory fresh GAUGE on the raker to see if the raker needs to be filed down. REMOVE the gauge and file a little then put the gauge back on the raker to see if the raker is now the proper height. If you file the raker with the gauge in place the file thins the tool's precise height while filing the raker - meaning that the gauge will slowly get thinner and thinner after every sharpening progressively making each raker shorter and shorter. After enough raker sharpenings the gauge will be paper thin and useless.

Do a video on STIHL Filing Depth Guage Tool #1110 893 4000, show us what those small slits are where your fingers are when you were showing us how the raker end worked. I paid 60 bucks for mine and I should at least know how to use the WHOLE tool.

Some people own a saw and don't know this?
@ApprenticeGM3 жыл бұрын
Yeah where I live in Oz lots of people go buy a chainsaw and have NO IDEA about maintenance. They don't know about dressing their bar, how to keep it tightened correctly (most run it too loose), flipping the bar and cleaning it out, or how to sharpen their chains let alone file the rakers. If they outsource the chain sharpening to a local shop, some of them don't know about or do the raker filing either - they assume they are just being paid to "sharpen only". They also don't know about correct chainsaw use, the danger of the tip and kickback, keeping it out of the ground, avoiding bar pinch, the list goes on and on. It's terrible . . . don't get me started. I feel like a one-man band trying to protect idiots from themselves, to the point I think the government should regulate purchase can only be made with a "license" earnt by proving you know how to use and look after it.

@@ApprenticeGM Agree with all said EXCEPT for the part about the government stepping in to begin heavy-handed control, including licensing. What about a license to ride a bicycle, to use kitchen knives (lots of injuries there), to use an iPhone while walking along a busy highway, to go mountain climbing, to go swimming in a lake, to use cleats on ice, etc. When you make something idiot-proof life simply makes a better idiot.
