A FILIPINA POLICE OFFICER HAPPENED TO BE IN THE GYM WHEN I SUDDENLY FOUND MYSELF CRASHING A FOUNDATION DAY IN KABUGAO APAYAO!
I wanted to drive up across the Apayao mountain road during the day this time, so I started out early. This land locked Province sits right along a massive river, and takes you up from Cagayan Valley into a unique mountainous environment. I had been here before in 2019, but never took the time to visit the Municipality of Kabugao. And on this morning... I didn't just visit it! I ended up crashing their 109th Foundation Day!!
Talk about surreal timing!
Luckily as I walked into the gym where a cultural show was happening, a Filipina police officer helped me out. I was able to better understand what was going on, and have an awesome time with the local community!
Apayao rules!! Kabugao is such positive vibes... this is "part 1" of my crashing a foundation day in Apayao!
Thank you Filipina and Filipino police!!!
POWER ON!

It’s interesting how the tribal clothes of the Mountain provinces are similar to the Muslims of Mindanao. - When it comes to music instruments, the gongs in this video are more simple than the elaborate ones in the south. I enjoyed your beautiful videos of Northern Philippines that were filmed about 3-4 years ago. I’m already enjoying this trip as well. Power on!! 👊🏼👊🏼

I love the Cordillera region. specially Mountain Province, Kalinga and Ifugao. I suggest pass by Bontoc, Mountain Province and go to the Museum there to get a history of the Igorot, the indgenous people of the Cordillera. a trip to Sagada also in Mountain Province and last but probably the best (for me), is to see Batad (amphiheater style rice terraces) and Banaue rice terraces in Ifugao. when you have passed by the places I have mentioned, get a ride from Bontoc, Mountain Province to Baguio via the Halsema Highway. you will see the Cordillera Mountain Range. the view is spectacular! (reminds me of the Swiss Alps…) and tell the driver to stop when you pass by the “highest elevated highway of the Philippines” in Atok, Benguet and take photos!

I've actually followed the Apayao river starting from Kabugao till the downstream area at Tawit. We used a "barangay", a flat bottomed boat that can negotiate the river when the water is low. We camped at the river for three days searching for the Phil. Eagle that was reportedly seen. We saw white bellied fishing eagles, brahminy kites, serpent eagles but no PE. It was an adventure though. Back then, the road towards Kabugao (capital town of Apayao) passing by Conner from Piat was rough as they come.

Some FYIs: Taddo is the Isnag courtship dance, Talip is the war dance. Dongdong-ay is actually a song that is shared amongst all tribes of the Philippine Cordilleras so you'll find that it's not only sang by the Isnags but also other Igorot tribes like the Itnegs, Kalingas, etc. Since each tribe speaks a different language, Ilocano is used as the second and the common language of all Igorot tribes. Igorot tribes are not limited to the Cordilleras; they also exists in the neighboring provinces like Ilocos Norte and Sur, Cagayan, Aurora, Nueva Ecija, etc.
