Excellent video of the dynamic interpretation of the drawings through the FMA tradition. I believe that there are deep roots here.

it seems blade size has somewhat shrunk since the 1800's.

The rondels are mostly armor-piercing spikes- no real blade to speak of!

Yes they did, and it's a real concern when practicing FMA since many of the traditional forms are dangerous and way less effective with modern short blades. There are a few modern approaches to this idea on Libre Knife Fighting and the Piper System, check them out!
