I find it kind of funny how both Thais and Filipinos are obsessed with light color skin :) My Pinay Wife is Ilacano and has a perfect " Brown Sugar " Color to her skin. And yes she has some small beauty marks as well. I think you are on to something about the aging as well, she is 34 but looks about 24 :) Mahal Kita Filipinas :)

I live in Norway, so my skin is really light in the winter, but when I go to the Philippines in the summer, I get really tan! I have beauty marks at the outer corners of my eyes, on my jawbone, inside my hand, on my foot, and I used to have one on my lip! (But I pull my lip skin off..)! People think I'm 12 or something, but I'm actually almost 17. I'm 4'10'' btw xD And everyone loves to touch my baby soft skin :3

i guess it's somewhat part of our culture already. most Filipinos believe that whiter & fairer skin are better and suggest that they are from the "upper class". It was also mentioned by a teacher of mine in history that even before the pre-colonial/spanish era the women of the upper class weren't allowed outside. something like that. it was also mentioned in GMA's Amaya tv show.

My introductory to the Filipino people was marriage. In moving to the Philippines, there were many frustrations along with the many wondrous pleasures of the many beautiful people and seemingly untouched nature. To preface these frustrations, it is important to note that my comments are not meant to insult anyone. As a black American, I have witnessed and been a victim of enough racist bullying from many groups, but mainly whites. That statement alone was not meant to include all whites, but it only takes one rotten apple for most of us to reject the entire basket. The first thing I noticed when I arrived in the Philippines was how segregated Filipinos are, even though they are all Filipinos. It was very clear that the darker your skin is, the further down the economic and social ladder you are likely to be. There also seemed to be a great deal of a lack of knowing how colonialism has affected and to this day, affects all Filipinos regardless of skin color or economic status. I heard it talked about on the taxi's radios as I explored the cities and businesses. Still to this day, it is clear that Filipinos tend to reject their very close connection with black Africa as they are attracted to Latino and white European cultures. As I have visited Africa and Mexico, I was amazed at how similar Filipinos and the Philippines are to Nigeria and Mexico. The similarities of Nigeria are so close to the Philippines, I felt as if you cold swop all Filipinos and all Nigerians with their homeland, there wouldn't be much of a difference. These disconnects are especially frustrating for me because I am married to a Filipina and we have a daughter together. I teach my daughter that she is 100% American and she is 100% Filipino. She was born in the Philippines, but she is seen as an American only by American laws. I don't teach her that she is half of anything because humans can't be half of anything. History should show us all that that concept does not work. A very good Filipino family member once (innocently) remarked to my wife that "you are so blessed that your daughter didn't get her skin color from her dad". She said it with a smile as if my wife and I would feel the same. As a result of colonialism and slavery, many people from all over the world have some European white blood, as I do. As I understand, my great grandmother was a white woman that had a daughter by a black man and gave up her daughter as her husband would not have accepted her black child. That mixture does not shame me, just as the black African blood within all Filipinos should not cause shame as well. Although I am not sure about the number of years scientist claim (30,000), I am just as sure black Africans migrated to the Philippine islands many thousands of years ago and some settled there as later, many other ethnic groups found their way to the Philippines as well and mixed with the indigenous people there. If you are going to love you people and yourself, you should accept all of those ancestors that came before you, including black Africans without shame.
