Unfortunately it doesn't work like this. The work needed to charge the battery is added to the work needed for the electric motor to drive the bike. One is basically cancelling out the other. There's no such thing as a free lunch. The laws of thermodynamics says so.

It depends on how much amperage the motor draws from the battery and how much amperage the alternator puts into the battery so if the amperage that's drawn from the battery for the motor is less than the amperage output of the alternator yes it will work

You can't arbitrarily claim that the rate of doing work in a system with zero losses can be greater in one direction and lower in the other direction (doing an analogy using counterbalanced weights would be a good illustration of this principle, and to duplicate FlyinBrian's point, you'd have to account how you would actually lift more weight in addition to the weight which is exactly counterbalanced - hint: it's not possible). But the situation with this generator/motor arrangement is even less favorable in the real world where there are losses every step of the way. Converting mechanical energy to electrical energy is not 100 percent efficient. And converting electrical energy back to mechanical energy is not 100 percent efficient. In fact, the efficiency of these steps is *not even close* to 100 percent. Finally, let's not ignore the fact that simply getting electrical energy into a battery and then out of it again (the conversion between electrical energy to chemical energy and then back again) is not 100 percent efficient. There are losses everywhere in this system, and as long as each process that takes place is wasting some of the energy by converting it to heat, there's no way that this can run endlessly. In fact, starting from scratch with with the battery not initially charged, it will not run at all.

Its perplexing today's auto engineers claim this can't work on EV's having alternators on all for moving wheels recharging the drive train batteries. With a single alternator specifically for recharging the instrument panels, radio, AC etc..

The wheels on electric cars are powered by electricity from the batteries, which is what would power any generator you add to the wheels... it would basically be like plugging a power strip into itself.

In today's EVs the high voltage batteries supply the power train and the multimedia etc. in a car. When braking, the engine is used as a generator aka alternator to generate electricity from the turning weels and refill the battery. This recuperation turns mechanical energy into electrical energy through negative torque. You could power the weels with the main engine and generate electricity at the same time with separate alternators. However that would always include an unnecessary amount of wasted energy through the friction etc. the alternator causes, like in bicycles. So from an efficiency point , the engineers don't do it. You wouldn't generate thrust, just to lose a tiny bit again through friction. Just directly use the energy from the battery!

Conservation of energy ….the cars motors drive the wheels powered by the main battery ..motors, wires and generators are not 100%efficient..all leak power through resistance,heat,friction etc .the alternator/ generator adds resistance to the motors driving the wheels so more power is needed just to overcome this resistance..plus the loss through inefficiency ..it is less efficient than just powering everything through the main battery . It’s not perplexing at all if you think about it.

A car alternator isn't a very good choice for the project due to it being relatively inefficient - it is designed to rotate at very high rpm and doesn't provide much charge at less than a couple of thousand revs and then a good deal of that charge is diverted into the rotor to generate the necessary magnetic field. Furthermore, a car alternator isn't designed for charging a lead acid battery and isn't really suitable for the task - the car alternator is designed to keep a near-fully charged battery nearly fully charged, plus provide current for the immediate electrical demands of the vehicle, such as lights, heater and wiper motor, ignition system, etc. and when it is producing a fair output it requires a good deal of torque to drive it - representing unwanted drag on the bike and extra work for the electric motor which amounts to an unnecessary additional battery drain. Better results would be obtained with a permanent magnet alternator, a different type of charge regulator, a different type of battery and a means of either switching off the alternator except when decelerating or coasting or disconnecting the drive to it except when decelerating or coasting... Better results would probably be obtained by deleting the alternator altogether and use the generating capability of the drive motor to send charge current to the battery when decelerating or coasting...

Clutch the alternator in to be driven as an engine brake coasting down hill, leaving it disengaged going uphill..clutch on off alternator with idle tensioner and belt n pulley? Or whatever but clutch it, for engine braking?

On the alternator, a ratcheting friction wheel/flywheel combo, when the bike wheel stops the alternators flywheel ratchets and still provides electricity even when full stop, like spinning a basketball with slaps, to keep the ratcheting flywheel alternator combo spinning? Even when stopped, another alternator could be incorporated to serve as a downhill engine brake simply with belt pully, pivoting idler/tensioner, like the rear derailer does, try that!

Car alternator is propably the most inefficient generator available. It's made to be small an cheap. You are lucky if you get half of the energy back what you loose in friction and electrical losses.

thats cool but the power to run the motor and pull all that weight. uses way more energy than the alternator can put out. i wish it did i have tried this on my e bike. that was getting 25 miles to the charge and i used a old bicycle headlight generator. and only got 21 miles per charge then i tried off a car and only got 12 miles per charge. the power to turn the alternator took more power than it could produce. that's when i built a solar trailer. and come to find out it only charged the battery when it was stopped and facing the sun just right. but i did end up driving it for 3 weeks and never plugged it into a wall plug. riding it about 40 miles a day.

Ok but a lead acid battery needs a minimum 12.50 volts to charge, you were lower. And theres no "free" energy here. YOU are providing energy (pedaling) to charge the battery
