This is a very good documentary about this incredible Christian building. So many of man's achievements were funded and encouraged in God's name . So while it is now fashionable to criticize faith and spirituality it is unlikely we would have risen as high as we have without our eye on a sense of the mystery of being .

The dimensions are enormous, but the principals are equal to what inuits do, building an igloo out of snow. This also with no scaffolding during its construction. In addition the slope of the Santa Maria dome follows near to the “chain line”. Thus there is next to no sideways forces in the arch in contrast to the half circle roman arch which tend to fall in the middle of the roof and move outwards at middle height of the arch. In fact there is probably very little stretch in the tension rings up the dome.

They say he was a secretive person, in an irreverent thieving world we live in. I say whats wrong with being secretive? Niccolo Machiavelli knew all to well of this!

I always wondered why modern civilization think that older civilization were not capable. I feel that in the era and technology we live now would could easily achieve more, but money is too important now that it is not feasible. They mention that wood centering would be too expensive to build with, come on in those ages there was no budgeting and or analysers that would have to consult with accountants. They would just start the project and finish it.

not this big, but in Mexico there are a lot of houses and place with this type of domes that are just floating. Look for "techos de bóveda ladrillo"

Ironic the church prays homage to these renaissance structures when they condemned the backer (Lorenzo de' Medici) to hell. They also made many of the artists of the day burn their paintings in the Bonfire of the Vanities. Many priceless treasures lost to satiate the absolute authority of the church. The research of ancient technologies and building techniques was done at great peril to on self. Artists who wandered off the church based pictorials where punished. Creative people dragged society out of the church's dark ages of witch burning and inquisitions.

A monk condemned Lorenzo, not the church. The monk's name is Savonarola, which the church condemned HIM for his heretical prophecies and defy pope's orders.

@@ajb7345 Was the church perhaps not implicit, much like the "current" blind eye it took for years against pedophilia in the church? Just a question, not an accusation.

@@davidpierce5413 You unknowingly are referring to the Communist Masonic infiltrators of the Church, like McCarrick and others. They are less than 2% of clergy, but as Bella Dodd said before the Senate (search her name here on KZbin), she alone recruited 1200 Communist homosexual atheists to enter seminaries with the intent of destroying the Church from within. That's who is perpetrating these disgusting acts.

@@ajb7345 Just so you know, Savonarola was a Dominican Friar, who is now up for canonization. The Pope was wrong and he was not a heretic. You're a little behind the times with your history. You'd do well to read his writing if you care to educate yourself about who he really was.
