You almost had right. Leaving the hay on the floor is a good start. BUT....Then it went south. Have the flakes stacked instead of on edge place the bottom of the bag on the top of the hay pile. Unfold the bag over the hay. (Like take off a latex glove.) That way you don't have to "shake it down" into the bag. (did you see all that wasted hay on the floor?). Next put a quick release knot at the opening of the bag, run the rest of the rope down to the o-ring at the bottom, then back up to the quick release. go through the quick release loop, tighten then hang. When the hay is gone, the bag doesn't hang down as far and you waste less.

I use a plastic trash can. Put the hay net inside and stretch the top of the bag over the opening. You can stack 3-4 flakes in then lift the net out.

Hi In my yard this is just not possible unless it's a small pony. I have to stuff the haynet very full and heavy. Then when tying up..tuck the long loop through a space or two near the bottom and pull the whole bottom of net right up ..then tie with a quick release knot....just in case. Takes it much higher off the floor. Not saying this to be unkind or anything but just what I do trying to be safer for the pony/horse. 😉😀
