both cagney and bogart returned to their "gangster" roots in the late 40s. cagney in "white heat" and bogart in 1948's "key largo" where bogie played the good guy to edward g. robinson's "johnny rocco." and one can't forget cagney's first major role in 1931's "public enemy." to see cagney's versitility watch the musical "yankee doodle dandy" a bio on the life of song and dance man george m. cohan. two early great bogart gangster films are "the petrified forrest" (1936) and "dead end" (1937) also with the "dead end kids." and "high sierra" (1940) written by john huston is also real good. it made bogie an a-list star that lead to his starring in "casablanca." thanks for the video my friend.

@@thisisfunhouseentertainment... i appreciate you watching these older films and uploading the reactions to youtube. there's another cagney performance i forgot to mention that i think you'd like. "mr. roberts" (1955) is a wonderful navy-themed ww2 film that stars cagney, henry fonda, william powell (his last film appearence) and jack lemon (one of his first film appearances). again cagney's and bogart's careers mirror each other as bogie starred in the navy-themed, ww2 film "the caine mutiny" the year before. both films are real good and worthy of a watch. thanks again.

@@cjmacq-vg8um I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. I came across Mr. Roberts while researching for my "Epic" 12 Angry Men review. Even for me, it was odd to see Cagney in, what looks like, a comedic role. Also, thanks for the suggestion of The Caine Mutiny I'll also check that one out.

The mordant, gallows humour of 'White Heat' is reflected decades later in 'The Sopranos' & 'Pulp Fiction'. Samuel L. cheerfully munching on a 'tasty burger' before cold blooded murder in the latter is so reminiscent of Cody noshing on a chicken leg before giving his stooge in the trunk of a car 'a little air'!!

Thanks for another great reaction vid. White Heat was a very shocking film for it's time, and James Cagney was America's favorite villain. Interesting to note, that back then, actors were under contract, and studios turned out movies like this at a fevered pace. The box office formula was to typecast their feature stars in roles that the public knew them as. For Cagney, his gangster image was set in 1931 with his audience stunning role in Public Enemy. Although it made him famous, Cagney resented having his career limited to this bad guy character type. It might come as a shock, but Cagney's roots were in vaudeville, and he always saw himself as a Song-N-Dance man. In multiple interviews he said his favorite role was staring in Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942). He plays the best villain of any actor I know. It might be selfish, but given his film legacy, I'm glad you can't always get what you want.

Gangster movies are not a genre I care for, but I enjoy all of your reactions to movies I’ve seen. I haven’t seen this one in at least 20 years, but when I heard Ma Jarrett’s distinctive voice, I instantly recognized that she was Ma York in “Sergeant York,” for which she got an Oscar nomination. A great old trooper from the English stage, Margaret Wycherly. In “White Heat,” she nearly steals every scene she’s in. I also saw her just last week on cable in a much smaller part in the noir, “The Man with a Cloak.”

You're right. Even the the thugs and gangsters wore suits and fedoras. Nowadays a lot of people seem to view such dress as costumes. I am old enough to remember when most men on the streets of Philadelphia where I grew up looked like the guys in this film.
@thisisfunhouseentertainment Жыл бұрын
Nice! I saw a spill over of it when I was going up in Jamaica. The older guys still wore suits and hats when they stepped out, back in the '80s. They at least wore a collared shirt if they had dressed down.

You sure appreciate every little bit of these great films and catch things most reactors do not. And 'Savage' is the word for this one! 1:36 "I think you'd look like a real heavy in a grey double-breasted tweed suit from Brooks Brothers for the Chatsworth train robbery, don't you, Mugsy?" Yup, they were all in business suits, and some smart stuff, too. 11:28 I think that method is still used. 12:55 Love that dame with her rebellious, wicked little jaw line. 13:31 If I could have learned metalworking in prison, that would have been a working vacation for me. 15:33 As I hear it, that wild fit that Cagney had hearing about the death of the mother was an improvisation that he hadn't performed in rehearsal, so it really shocked all the extras playing the convicts and the guards.
